Fool Me Once (2024)

Contrived, confusing drivel
27 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Thank goodness I have avoided reading Coben. This series was pure drivel. From the screwy hairstyles of the 'star' to the labyrinth of characters, to the contrived checkerboard of plotlines to the 'revalations' of motives and actions at the end.... This was a mish mash of ridiculous storylines. Altogether silly and amateurish. Not worth reading and certainly not worth viewing. Reasonably competent actors playing out a nonsense idea. It certainly hit all the features of diversity which was gratifying to see. Too bad it made a joke of too many ingredients in the end. Not believable, not credible, not well brought together.

Beautiful writing and plotting
5 September 2023
The 5th season of Unforgotten is even more amazing than the first four seasons. Even without the scrumptious Nicola Walker, this season is doing her partner, who plays Sunny Khan, has earned his stripes to carry forth the exemplary series. The intricacies in this season are deeply layered and woven together into a spell binding series of surprises. I must watch the entire season in one, long and satisfying day. It is too good to put it to bed for even one night. Masterpiece Theater is giving us its longtime excellent best in this several years of closed case procedurals. As only the British, apparently, are capable of.

Too many stories in one vehicle
3 June 2023
This was one that could not decided if it is a silly set of love stories (True love and a baby/miscarriage within a month of meeting each other. Two married professionals fumble around with an improbable affair. A lesbian will she/won't she was tossed in to titillate). Or, will it be a fairly dramatic scientific discovery of a confusing triad/quadrangle of crime events. The series vacillates between serious crimes and a series of perhaps overlapping CSI discoveries and a foolish stream of affairs, personality problems, and family matters. The writers of this occasionally thoughtful crime/scientific drama confused it with quasi love drama among the police and scientists and seemed to be confused about how to engage the viewer. Was it meant to instruct the viewer and to tickle the fancy of the crime enthusiast? Or, was it meant to stir up a confusing and improbable stream of romantic entanglements for those who expect such 'entertainment'? This series was an occasionally absorbing drama overlaid with silly and unnecessary romantic involvements.

Another series with beautiful people with foul mouths
31 March 2023
Oh, OK, so here's another, new series, full of promise and wonderful actors with unnecessarily foul mouths, and messy lives. It should be so full of promise and so worth watching and after the first episode, I think that if this is what entertainment is about in this country, I am about to give up. The premise of this series is good, but flippant and the way that the characters move through that first day as though there really isn't anything unusual about their lives, is somewhat depressing. Kerry Washington, as a fully trained and successful therapist, does not say much for that profession. I find this new series disappointing and sad because it embodies what is wrong about entertainment in this country. I keep hoping that the public will realize that our political milieu is precisely a reflection of our entertainment milieu. I'll watch a couple more episodes and give it a better try, but I am bleak about the purpose and aim of this new show.

Law & Order: Mammon (2023)
Season 22, Episode 13

Excellent writing
15 February 2023
This is excellent writing on the very touchy issue of the Gospel of prosperity and its impact to those who could be caught up in it.. The Gospel of Prosperity is nothing but evil exploitation of faithful congregants as they donate their money and emotions to a church in the belief that any positive change in their lives can be ascribed to the church. This episode dealt squarely with the many sides of this issue. I can only hope that it struck a cord with watchers who may be caught up in this religious reign of terror. The clergy benefits of the believers donations includes aircraft, expensive and exotic cars, scandalously expensive housing, and on and on. All of these things are given without taxation to the pastors and the churches. This episode details just how far this merciless and evil religious theory can possibly go.

Pure Post Victorian Irish Catholic Porridge
31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An appealing story and nice enough acting. But absolutely could have been written by a Middle Schooler. All the self satisfying early 20th Century cliches and resulting answers to dilemmas, only whispered background dangers allude to the strife in the story, no really lasting consequences to anyone's decisions. Everyone mostly win and lives their mostly lives happily ever after. Altogether predictable and mawkish. Disappointing, exasperating pap. Generally satisfying musical score, lush cinematography, appealing costuming, faithful recreation of the farming life. However, the mystery is where money comes from to sustain the lives of the cast and how about the every day matters of the bodily functions of the characters. And how does one keep the persons and the bedding so nicely washed. Not a very realistic representation of the necessary strife within this sad tale.

Sherwood: Episode #1.3 (2022)

All the British Entertainment Royalty
29 October 2022
The series is proving to be a prime example of British excellence. And virtually every member of the acting elite is playing a part somewhere in this story. Keeps the viewer at the edge of the seat. This is the type of production that keeps me paying for Acorn and Britbox. And I LOVE seeing all of my highly favored British acting aces and absorbing more and more of English history in the process. No-one does drama quite like the British that I return to over and over. One of the things that continues to thrill me is that the stars take bit parts when needed to be able to remain in the game. So, they star sometimes and they died early in the action when it serves the production.

Pure silly schlock
15 July 2022
This episode was silly and contrived. Waaay beneath the quality of this superior series. Emilia's stupid sex escapade was nonsense and completely out of character. The series has begun reaching too far. It more resembled an old Bela Lugosi movies than what we have come to expect from these writers.

Pieces of Her (2022)
The young Jane was terrible. The series rates an overall grade of C+
16 May 2022
Jessica Barden has all the expressiveness of a Cabbage Patch doll. Absolutely every facial expression is the same; doll faced, large unmoving eyes, acting range of -10. In an otherwise sort of interesting series, this character lends nothing to the action but a cardboard version of a supposedly interesting character. Toni Collette is compelling in this complex , contrived vehicle. Ms. Barden adds nothing to this B level piece of drama other than lousy acting.

Brilliant. Smashing.
16 March 2022
Here is a splendid format for witty dialog, exceptional acting, a new premise, thoughtful skillful writing. The first season was good, the second exceeds that marvelously. Patricia Clarkson is among the best and Brendan Gleeson is wryly surprising. This is some of the best TV ever.

A Movie in Search of a Plot

Unadulterated soap opera trash. Mix in every human failing, no matter how preposterous, and hope that it all morphs into a reasonably interesting whole. I just finished watching E3 and this tripe has become more outlandish at every turn. Good actors, swarming about in an unbelievably ridiculous swill. This one just left my Sundance Must Watch list.

Poorly written
21 July 2021
This production should have been compelling. Instead, it was mawkish and contrived. As an aficionado of the mystery genre, I was uninspired. This level of writing borders on the talents of a Mary Higgins Clark or a James Patterson. Writers of the vast majority of Masterpiece Theater productions deliver a tightly spun, comprehensively linked story. The productions I have been seeing appearing on Apple+ and even the venerable Acorn TV have been bordering on amateurish. I expect more from my streaming services than what has been offered recently.

Terrible writing
23 August 2020
Mawkish, stilted, amateurish. Acting was good but the parents were poorly cast. The premise and the outcomes were foolish. Altogether a silly portrayal of a serious subject.

Messing with us

One beautiful surprise after another. And gratifying laughs in every episode. The Coens tittilate and slyly entertain every minute. What a gem. Tell everyone you meet.
