Older Gods (2023)
Lovecraft for a new age.
First off, let's talk about what this film is not. It is not an action-based horror flick, and it is not a jump-scare bonanza.
This is a slow, character-driven horror with a creeping dread that works its way under your skin as you try to solve the mystery. It is much more in line with the aesthetic brought by Cthulhu (2006), Black Mountain Side, or The Empty Man. If those resonate with you, then give this one a shot.
I personally was prepared for this based on the director's previous short films. Each one is really focused on the human element, on the emotions of the situation. While that may drive a lot of people away from this, it's also what makes it great for the die-hard fans of cosmic horror. It's as intimate as a first-person Lovecraft story.
Older Gods is ensnaring from the opening credits, and the pacing doesn't feel rushed or drawn out. For a film from a small crew, they seriously did an amazing job from concept to development. Keep an eye on everyone involved with this production. I have a feeling that they are all going to continue doing some great things in the future.
