Room 237 (2012)
Conspiracy Theories for Idiots
I was kind of excited for this documentary. I thought it was going to be a deep dive into the hidden meanings of the Shining. Instead what I got was a bunch of half-baked theories That can barely be held together by two strings.
For All Mankind (2019)
Started Strong...Losing Steam
The first few episodes of S1 are very compelling, then the show gets bogged down in gender politics and starts to drag shortly after that. I'm up to S1E8 and have gotten quite bored. I'll probably go one or two more episodes and then abandon it if nothing improves.
Soul (2020)
The Pixar Formula
I find that Pixar films these days are never bad, but never outstanding, either. They just don't live up to the studio's earlier offerings anymore.
'Soul' hits all the necessary checkboxes, pulling at the heartstrings when needed, making you chuckle (or at least grin) at all the right moments, and so on. In essence, it follows The Pixar Formula, and because of that it feels very safe, familiar, and same-ole thing. Worth watching, but just as forgettable as films like Onward, Coco, or The Incredibles 2.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Complete Trash
This movie is a disaster on almost every level. It's overlong, boring, has a ridiculous story hung on a stupid concept, forced moments, bad CGI, mainly phoned-in performances, a lack of meaningful action, and several absolutely ludicrous moments (ex: a mothballed fighter jet is sitting at the Smithsonian fully fueled, ready for flight, can be flown by anyone, has the range to make it across the Atlantic, and can be turned invisible by a magic spell by someone with no magic powers whatsoever).
The only positive I have to say is that is Pedro Pascal made the most out of the trash scrip that was handed to him. While his character isn't compelling (he's actually written cartoonishly bad), Pascal gave it his all and acted his heart out, and I respect people who have such a strong work ethic. Well done, sir.
Superintelligence (2020)
Please Kill Me
How do movies like this get greenlit? Do they actually make money? The only reason I suffered through it is my wife ran out of things to watch so she picked this.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Weak & Timid
The show is unimaginative and seems afraid to take risks. I was bored with most of season 1, and although I had higher hopes for season 2, it's so far delivering more of the same bland content. I mean, S2 E1 alone was a rehash of season 1 story ideas. And enough with the fan service already. Star Wars is set a long time ago in a GALAXY far far away, not in a small neighborhood of planets and ideas that we have to keep seeing over and over. The Mandalorian just isn't a very compelling show.
The Mandela Effect (2019)
Sophomoric Writing
Don't waste your time. This suffers from Donnie Darko syndrome, where it tries to make you believe it's an intelligent film but it really isn't. It's an interesting concept, filled with vagaries.
