Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Worse than Green Lantern
This is the worst film I've ever seen. It's horribly bad. If I could give it a minus review I would.
I couldn't finish it.
Woeful.
The Layover (2017)
Awful
Possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Really sad to see two strong beautiful women clambering after one man in a desperate situation. Pathetic. Don't bother.
American Horror Story: Chapter 1 (2016)
I'm bringing horror back...yeah!
Loved it. Been a loyal fan since the beginning and having forced myself through the mess that was Hotel I prayed and prayed that Ryan would get back to basics and bring back the reason why everyone fell in love with this franchise to begin with... HORROR!
This is what the viewers have all been waiting for. A fresh concept, a fresh format, and the jump out of your seat moments that featured in Murder House and Asylum. I must have jumped at least ten times throughout this first episode, brilliant.
I love that the theme has been kept a secret, and that the remainder of the series is still shrouded in mystery. Fantastic to see some of our favourite actors and actresses returning (still no Jessica boohoo) and great to see some new faces join the cast.
I really hope that the suspense, the shocks and the scares continue, and that the rest of the season builds and grows from this great foundation block of a first episode. I'm certainly counting the days till episode 2. Really excited for what is to come, and pleasantly surprised with this new direction. I really think it will work providing the HORROR remains transparently integral throughout the season, fingers crossed!
The Shield (2002)
Documentary style camera work and gritty story lines make The Shield a classic in its own right
I first started watching The Shield about a year ago, and instantly became hooked. Finished watching the 5th series last week and cannot wait for the 6th to start in 2007, its gonna be wild.
Set in the gang ridden area of present day Farmington Los Angeles, the series follows the Police Departments escapades in cleaning up this area. Yes the camera angles and cinematography is a little unorthodox and certainly not what any TV series fan is probably used to, but thats what makes The Shield so unique and outstanding in its category. It almost appears as a documentary on the police department of Farmington Los Angeles, but again this makes it different to the rest and a lot more exciting to watch- you actually start to feel more involved in the storyline yourself!
The characters are exceptional, especially lead actor Michael Chiklis who plays the leader of the Farmington Strike Team Vic Mackey, and in the first episode alone we learn a lot about his personality and the type of man he is and will be for the rest of the series. This consistency in his character, in that, yes he is a corrupt cop and bends the rules to favour himself and his team at any chance he can get, but; he also is a genuinely good man in that he does want scum bags off the street and works his butt off to accomplish this, make The Shield all the more thrilling to watch as you never no what Vic and his team are going to get up to next. This unpredictability of this TV series certainly make it all the more enjoyable to watch. Aside from Mackey, other characters include his strike team, Shane Vendrell (Walton Goggins), Kurtis Lemansky (Kenny Johnson) and Ronnie Gardoki (David Rees Snell)- are all exceptional actors also. Benito Martinez plays the thoroughly believable character of Captain David Acevada, striving to make the Farmington PD the best in Los Angeles. Two other detectives, partners Claudette Wymms (CCH Pounder) and Dutch Wagonbach (Jay Karnes) also add an element of competition and dis-trust to the series, as well as an example of exceptionally good detective work, as their relationship with the strike team is somewhat ambiguous.
The story lines are gritty, unpredictable and fast-paced, and show a real insight to what some areas of gang-ridden Los Angeles are like even today. All of the series are linked together fantastically, so be sure to watch it from the very start.
The soundtrack is also worthy of a mention as it is a vital part of the show's watchability factor. There is usually a round-up of the current events at the end of most of the shows or at the end of the series, and this is backed by a pleasantly fitting track. For example at the funeral of a detective in the fourth series an amazing rock version of amazing grace by the drop-kick murphy's helped to emphasise the rocky situation the strike team had got themselves into- a most excellent choice of song.
On the whole, Gang-warfare, drugs, prostitution, corruption, adultery and murder make this series a thoroughly riveting watch. Any fan of the likes of 24 or CSI should give it a chance, it truly is a unique and most excellent specimen of a police/detective TV series.
