Great performance by Zoe Saldana
24 December 2023
Out of everything I've seen Zoe Saldana in, this is definitely a top performance by her. She is certified bad ass in this role and seems very comfortable, and believable, playing the alpha in a military-type drama. The show wouldn't have been nearly as successful if she weren't cast as the lead.

There are some other noteworthy performances by Laysla De Oliveira and the QRF team that was cast. Nicole Kidman's performance was stiff, but it worked for her role.

Taylor Sharidan seems to have a solid formula for both writing and producing quality shows as of late. He's developed enough of a reputation that I'm willing to oversee questionable show ratings and take a chance on watching his content.

I'm definitely looking forward to another season with these characters.

Capitalism vs. Public Healthcare
16 October 2021
The show does an excellent job of presenting two irreconcilable entities - capitalism and healthcare. Previous reviewers who criticized the show for trying to be 'woke' and mainstream with regard to the opioid epidemic miss a subtle point here. The show touches upon a subject that has often plagued American healthcare since its inception. How can healthcare continue to operate in a financial system which puts profit above public well-being?

This show, so far, is doing a great job with organization, and giving a clear timeline to a fairly drawn-out and complex topic. Themes of greed and pain are developing nicely and are seamlessly interwoven through different characters.

The writers have definitely stacked the deck against the Sackler family here - and rightfully so. It's one thing for Purdue Pharma to have actually committed these crimes, but I'm not holding my breath for any sort of conviction in the American justice system. After all, this is the same system that places more value in your ability to generate profit than any other metric. That's not opinion - that's fact. The sooner more people in this country realize this, the better.

Well Crafted Documentary with Eye-Opening Wiretapped Conversations
18 March 2021
"Back doors", "side doors", and endless loopholes - this documentary shows how the world is just an infinite playground for the wealthy. One of the unique elements to this doc is the recreation of conversations which were achieved through wiretapping. These conversations are... disgusting, to say the least. This format really allows you to see just how culpable and guilty these people are. The fact they're on tape admitting to knowingly doing wrong is sickening.

The sentences at the end are, of course, a joke. Without enforcement, this signals there will be a continuation of such practices in the future. But that's how it is in America. A high profile bust with lots of glitz and cameras, followed by an anemic jail sentence. Something's clearly broken here.

Overall, excellent documentary. I'm not usually a big fan of dramatic reenactments in this format - but it worked very well this time.

Electric and Entertaining Drama
30 October 2020
This miniseries manages to transform the intellectual and slow pace of chess into a very exciting sport. I will admit to being hesitant to watch this because I never found chess that captivating - boy was I wrong! Anya Taylor-Joy was perfectly cast in the lead role. She absolutely embraced the character and you don't doubt for a second that she's a world renowned chess prodigy.

All seven episodes offer character development that blend seemlessly into the wider plot. There's really never a dull moment in the series.

I just can't get over how great Anya was in this. She had the perfect look for the historical time period the show was set in.

If you're considering watching this but worry watching the game of chess won't be entertaining - just do it. I promise you won't regret it!

Meh....
18 September 2020
I've only watched the first episode, and won't be continuing with the show. As some have already said, there's great visuals and set design - but I wasn't blown away with Ratched's character.

Maybe I'm making a mistake by not watching more, but I just think there's much better shows out there.
