Lost in Space: Blast Off Into Space (1966)
Season 2 starts off with a bang
Spoiler alert......
Loved this episode. Daughter Judy has an actual line other than yelling, "Will... Penny!"
She says, "You never realize how much you accumulate until you have to get rid of it," as she and her mother haul out items like badminton nets and rackets, bouncy balls, fishing nets and poles, etc. in order to lighten the ship's for an emergency takeoff. (I personally feel the Bloop was expendable). But my question, how did they accumulate all this stuff ... It obviously had to have been packed aboard the Jupiter prior to takeoff the previous year.
Daughter Judy gets to share yet another touching scene as John makes sure she's tucked in for takeoff, even sneaking an affectionate kiss from her dad.
Fortunately for our heroic family, the reluctant castaway, and the Bloop, the Jupiter lifts off just as a giant fireball explodes where it had been sitting, miraculously undented since its crash landing.
And hats off to Maj. Don "crash" West... Who manages to fly through every erupting fireball explosion en route to heading once again into space..... Where he almost immediately drives the spacecraft right through a massive planetoid-like fireball.
Lost in Space: Junkyard in Space (1968)
Final LIS episode fit only for the junk heap
Why did this episode not appeal to me?
Let me count the ways. First, the accent and personality of the guest "villain" were difficult to digest. Every time he spoke in his thick French accent, I found myself gasping for air, or trying to complete his sentences.
Maureen and John Robinson were treated as third rate extras, Maureen's only contribution a couple of lines about the food supply being wiped out by a "rust blight."
Professor Robinson has one short scene below decks... Other shots of him are old colorized scenes when he was flying on the jet pack looking for Penny from season 1.
What's worse is that there is no resolution to their situation....did they ever find food? Did they ever get off the planet? Did anyone figure out Maureen was missing? Does the absence of the Bloop have anything to do with their food shortage?
Sad to see a fun series end so abruptly.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The Heat Monster (1967)
The heat monster
OK... What can I say about Guest star Alfred Ryder that hasn't been written. Nothing, except that his feigned Norwegian accent alone rates this episode a strong 5...But with the additional fine acting from the entire cast and the always anticipated multiple explosions and electronics failures aboard the Seaview... A definite 8.
Kowalski appears to be the ship's designated "red shirt," except that, unlike Star Trek red shirts, he doesn't get killed every episode, just brutally beaten and bruised. Probably the toughest crewman on the Seaview.
I could be wrong, but this may be the first episode to feature a burning flame as the antagonist. That said, its elocution was magnificent.
After this episode, I'm certain the Seaview was in the shipyard at least a week being overhauled....Exactly how many Co2 bottles do they go through every week? Staggering.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The Fossil Men (1967)
The fossil men
What's not to like about this episode. It contains everything viewers came to love about VTTBOTS..... Air bubbles convulsing the Seaview back and forth.... Adm Nelson, Capt. Crane and the rest of the control room crew being lurched to and fro as control panels hiss smoke and emit fireworks....
As he does in every episode, poor Kawolski gets beat up, shakes it off, and keeps on going. No doubt he has his own bunk in sick bay reserved.
Voyage by this point didn't pretend to be what it was in the first season..... So once you understand that..... It makes it OK to laugh along with the dialogue and story lines..
It truly was fun entertainment. By the way, how much would it really have cost taxpayers to have the Seaview overhauled nearly every week. Staggering.
