Be Underestimated
3 October 2023
This soap opera is underestimated.

I saw a comment today and I think it makes a lot of sense: Many people watch comedies just to laugh and don't care if the story is profound. If comedy is too satirical or close to cruel reality, it may actually make people unhappy.

But I think this is regrettable because the core of comedy is tragedy. This TV series has made me cry for several episodes, which should be said to resonate with my soul. I think if you have the patience to watch from the first episode of the first season, you will naturally agree with my viewpoint that every workplace worker or white collars have the same of John Hu's pain, worry, and anxiety. Thank you to the creative team of this TV series for allowing us to laugh at the bitter workplace life.

Cartoons for adults to watch
3 October 2023
Here are some things that adults should be able to see from this film: 1. Artistic creation requires full freedom; 2. Top artists may be more or less insane or in a drunken state to inspire them; In feudal autocratic society, artists and anyone can be deprived of their freedom at any time by those with higher status and power than you; 4. Youth is short and beautiful.

I don't know to what extent this movie can reproduce the real Tang Dynasty, at least the demeanor of Tang Dynasty artists has been portrayed with sincerity by the film creators. Including the creator and singer of the ending song, Luo Dayou, whose singing style resembles that of Li Bai after getting drunk. Perhaps ancient and modern times are interconnected.

Imaginative and cute animation, thanks to Japanese!
19 August 2023
This movie is full of Japanese romantic imagination. They combine Chinese mythological stories with the character images of Athenian mythology, and in some plots, they use Hollywood style music and multicultural dance. This is a wonderful combination!

What makes me love the most is that this film retains the traditional Japanese animation style, classical beauty, and cuteness. The image of Sun Wukong and his girlfriend is extremely adorable, and the final outcome is that the male leading role returns to his family and lives happily with the female leading role which simply satisfies everyone's longing for a better life (of course, we know deep down that this is impossible). However, thank you to the Japanese filmmakers for their contributions in the 1960s. I watched it for the first time 63 years later and it was still very enjoyable. Thank you again!

Quite close to historical facts
19 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, this series maximizes the creative team's respect for history. None of us have experienced the Qing Dynasty, but we can see the historical authenticity in the main characters of this series (including the fact that the historical characters look like the actors in the series, such as Li Hongzhang and Yuan Shikai), rather than over-dramatizing them.

Secondly, the series tries its best to do what Dr. Sun didn't do: educate the general public about democracy (or what he called "political training"). After watching the series, I had an immersive feeling and understood Dr. Sun's ideas in general.

Lastly, the series leaves behind a lot of research questions that are worth pondering over, such as:

1. Who actually sabotaged the road to the republic? Was it the conservatives (fake constitutionalists) consisting of Cixi and others, or the real constitutionalists like Emperor Guangxu and Tan Sitong. My personal figure is a utilitarian like Kang Youwei. Although he also advocated constitutional monarchy, it seems that he was more willing to arrogantly display his talent and compete with the conservatives, but he overestimated his ability. In a way, Kang Youwei was naive, and I think it was his recklessness that undermined the original constitutional monarchy and victimized those young people in the Hundred Days of the Past, leaving room for dictatorship enthusiasts like Yuan Shikai to flourish, to this day.

2. Does the road to revolution necessitate bloodshed and sacrifice? Sun Yat-sen's revolutions were accompanied by a large number of casualties, back to the Sino-Japanese War, which can also be regarded as a derivative of Li Hongzhang's revolution, and was also characterized by a large number of deaths and injuries. Unfortunately, none of their revolutions ended up with the desired results. Were those sacrifices worth it? In particular, the assassination of Xu Xilin, who died in vain, also failed to shake the original system. When Dr SUN Yat-sen and WONG Hing (aka Huang Xing) were arguing about leadership, I think it was an argument about efficiency and fairness. Setting up a leader whom everyone respected and obeying the leader might be able to solve a lot of problems efficiently, but would the things decided by such a leader be fair to everyone? So what Huang Xing is advocating is the need to trade time for efficiency, and the success of a revolution needs to be hard to see immediately, but if we all want fairness, we have to need patience.

Suddenly I remembered what Li Hongzhang said: A generation can only do what a generation should do. Qu Hongji had analyzed the key point for the survival of the Qing government, and I think it happens to be the best answer for the road of revolution towards republic: To popularize the concept of constitutionalism\democracy among all people.

Reflection Boldly of That Era
21 May 2023
First of all, the scene scheduling and contrast between light and dark in this movie is better in Chinese black and white movies.

Secondly, the staged dramatic performance is a characteristic of the films of that era.

Most importantly, the screenwriter has condensed the important historical events before and after the Hundred Days Reform into the love story of Concubine Zhen and Emperor Guangxu, which is a first of its kind. Even today, no one else can represent historical stories so boldly.

The downside is that the characterization is too facial and flat, lacking the depth of character portrayal. But these flaws will not affect the film's reflection on Chinese history. Individual lines are even deafening, such as "The Chinese are submissive and need to be controlled."

The secret of the revolution
1 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
From this episode, It gradually began to reveal the secrets of the revolution. The various political techniques of the revolutionaries seem to be the same as those of the present people.

When Liang Qichao lobbied Zhang Zhidong, Ku Hong-ming revealed a terrible truth:Some will use patriotism to do whatever they want.

Yuan Shikai was ambitious, and the first thing he had to do was to cultivate an army that was subordinate to their superiors, primarily Yuan himself.

Sun is full of idealism, but when he saw his brother and sister-in-law who support him, he has to face the harsh reality: The uprising relied on revolutionary fervor and doctrine, but the most important basis was money.

A example of group drama in early Mandarin films
5 March 2023
This is a rare example of group drama in early Mandarin films.

The body movements and lines of each character are full of personality, the lens scheduling is very reasonable, the lighting effect reflects the excellent level of black and white films, and the editing is very compact, which adds a lot of rate to the narrative rhythm.

A very complete and good movie on the whole.

There are several points: First, dirty words. Many characters speak dirty words without restraint, which is unimaginable in the current Chinese films, and this is the 1940s.

The second is Yunzhu Shangguan. Most of the characters she played were petite ladies. Here, a prostitute with low status but noble personality was performed and she did very well.

Beautiful to the extreme
10 September 2022
No one can go back to the Tang Dynasty. But the costumes, makeup, utensils, royal court games, and Buddhist temples in this film convinced me that this is absolutely Tang Dynasty.

Although the overall story line is too bland, and the interpretation of Yang Gui Fei's view of love is not deep enough (probably limited to the duration of the movie), several major scenes, such as bathing in Huaqing Pool, Yang's dances at palace, and Li Bai's poems to Yang Gui Fei (Imperial Concubine Yang), are all perfectly displayed.

Imperial Concubine Yang Yang seems to be pursuing pure love, hoping to be an ordinary couple with the emperor in the next life. But in the political struggle, she herself became a victim.

My Superhero (2022)

Who is superhero?
10 September 2022
I'd be wondering why a story about a doorman chasing a flight attendant should be translated into a "My Superhero"? Later, I saw half of it and realized that it was the flight attendant who inspired the doorman and gave him the courage to continue to struggle and make progress. So the flight attendant (Zheng You'en) is the superhero of the doorman (Zhang Guangzheng).

It's not that simple. After watching the whole story, especially the last shot of the last episode, I realized that it wasn't just a flight attendant who saved the doorman. The flight attendant's mother (Liu Meili) and the doorman's neighbor, middle-aged women (Sun Caixia & her friends), are all superheroes, and they all inspire the doorman with their fighting spirit. The doorman and his roommates (Wang Niulang & Chen Jingdian) also gave back to these superheroes, making their dreams come true. They accomplish each other.

What moved me to tears many times was about the old age of the elderly. Young people and old people seem to live in two worlds. When the final parting comes, whether the old people can retain their own joy of life determines their quality of life. Fortunately, they did. May we all dance happily when we are old, just like the middle-aged women in this story. God Bless Us.

Three Things Impressed Me from Girl's Innocent Memory
2 May 2022
That is the era we can never go back.

I am speaking my opinion purely from personal experience. There are three things that impressed me the most about this movie:

1. The cute face and hairstyle of little girl Yingzi, and her eyes are full of innocence.

2. The theme music that always appears at the right time, revealing a touch of parting emotion.

3. The slow-paced way of life in old Beijing. For example, camels and donkeys are used as means of transportation, to dig well water, etc.

Everything is the real memory of little girl Yingzi, through her innocent eyes observation, it is really full of emotion, as if it is an unreal past. But I know that those people and things did exist. The good thing is that the little girl doesn't distinguish between good and bad, so she can get close to many people. Now we are all good at value judgment and moral judgment, and it is difficult to be a quiet observer like her.

"Let the past thing pass". This is one of lines. With the lyrics of the theme music, life seems to be constantly saying goodbye to people and things in the past. Both unpleasant and beautiful things will gradually leave us. What a sadness feeling at last.

A rare Shanghai dialect movie
3 April 2022
It's been a long time since I saw a movie with all the lines in Shanghainese. The film is full of Shanghai's unique style and human touch, but also cleverly embedded in the director's own wisdom and humor. I felt very comfortable listening to the Shanghai dialect in the movie, watching the streets of the plane trees and enjoying the whole story. All were so appropriate. I think this shows that films need to be diversified. China's films should not be full of northern-style narratives and language styles. Too much will make us tired.

At present, it seems that Beijing is too dominant in popular culture, and there are too many styles of north, including the northeast in China's movie and TV series.

The good news is that there is a chance to counter the northern power, in addition to Shanghai, the southern style film production is Guangdong. For example, I Am What I Am (aka Xiongshi Shaonian). The images and scenes presented in the story are full of Lingnan style (the area near Foshan, Guangdong Province, the hometown of Yip Man). Unique, fresh and full of tradition .

Highly recommend Inspirational story from reality
3 April 2022
I feel the same way as all charactors in movie and burst into tears.

The technical level is almost perfect in my opinion, and all the flaws in character modeling are finally understood as the need to shape the characters who are look like ugly, but it feels real, as if the people around me may even be myself.

Overall, this inspirational story of people at the bottom sublimated a legend which give me so many Better than expected, more important, it returned to reality at the end of story which made me more sober instead of dreaming. It made me believe that this story could have happened in reality. Of course, the people at the bottom still need to face the harsh reality. It reminds me: Life is going on as before that is not overshadowed by the passion of Inspirational story.

Extremely clever logic!

And Great fit music! The images and scenes presented in the story are full of Lingnan style (the area near Foshan, Guangdong Province, the hometown of Yip Man). It makes me miss Hong Kong cinema at its best in the 1990s. Unique, fresh and full of tradition.

The Bond (2021– )
Too good-looking to close reality
16 January 2022
I shouldn't have rated the TV series before I fully watched it. At least two friends recommended this show, so I watched a few episodes and some clips.

I have to say that the actors did very hard, but I still can't believe the story is true from their performances. Maybe I'm being too picky. Compared to Shameless which in the same dramatic family background, I think the actors of that American TV series are the person who came out of reality, but these Chinese actors seem to be too good-looking, maybe their dramatic performance of acting forcefully deviates from the rough texture and cruel reality that the story should have.

Entrepreneurship story is hard, reality is harder
13 November 2021
I judge whether a movie is good or not entirely based on feelings. If a drama makes me cry, it is worth 8 points or higher. The narrative at the beginning of this film is interspersed between different eras, and the editing is a bit too fast, almost making me give up watching it. But this kind of movie grammar does not affect my appreciation. The struggle and entrepreneurial history of three ordinary young people, as well as the various frustrations and insights they experienced, moved me (almost to tears).

This movie is based on the "New Oriental" company's development. Many storylines have been seen in the news related to New Oriental, and now there are three things that I feel most deeply: 1. The Chinese people yearn for a better life and define the United States as the goal of a better life. This is the initial psychological motivation for generations of Chinese to continue to study English.

2. Even if they have learned proficient English and easily passed the GRE test, their way of thinking is not necessarily independent and mature. In some cases, they can even curse the United States and insult the teachers who helped them study English. On the one hand, they may be willing to enjoy the actual benefits of an unfair advantage and quibble about it (in a sensational way), on the other hand, they may be strongly dissatisfied with Objective criticism.

3. It may be difficult to start a business in China not only because the partners are 3 best friends since live from University, but also because they may choose the wrong industry. It is said that New Oriental is no longer able to continue to engage in education and training, and is seeking a career change. The real life of the three founders after 2021 may be even more challenging.

A little disappointing for the last two episodes
31 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The performances of several main actors were basically passed. But their characters more or less repeat the past history, so I don't feel surprised.

It is also a homicide case involved in small things among teenagers. The end of the story is a little disappointing.

Maybe it's my prejudice. I always think the screenwriter is vilifying the transvestites. The end of the whole story seems to be attributed to the manslaughter of transvestites under the trouble of mental illness, but will this make the audience have a greater misunderstanding of transvestites? That's why I gave 5/10.

The fog has dissipated, but the root cause of the fog has not been eradicated. The power of social tolerance and justice needs more time to explore and practice.

A tragedy of two brothers and sisters
10 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The story is heartbreaking. To some extent, the sisters and brothers (that rapist and his brother) mirror each other. The sisters' parents hurt them and made them depend on each other since childhood. What about the brothers? It is not clearly stated in the story, but I can guess that their parents did not give them a good childhood. The feelings between the brothers are also touching, just as the sisters clearly show in the film. Education in the family environment is so important for both boys and girls and may affect their whole lives. Unfortunately, the boys and girls in this story are tragedies.

The crowd of onlookers in the film twice criticized the victims' sisters. The lens language is very ironic. This is not only a Chinese characteristic, but also an exaggerated expression of social behavior. These onlookers are numb to other people's pain but so curious. Is their performance also a bad response to family education?

Oh, by the way, there are two nude bathing scenes at the beginning and end of the film. The young bodies of the sisters are full of hazy beauty. The rapist's robust body is also full of hormones and repressed desires. This is really an imaginative image language. Great movie!

No need to overdo at the end
7 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is full of memories of 1980s, including the school management method (it still seems to be the same today), students' clothing, their entertainment, and popular music they like. Most of the scenes and stories give me credible feelings and a strong sense of substitution. It could have been awarded 8-9 points, but when the story was about to end, An Jing went to the county government to redress the injustice for Teacher Miao made me feel over sensational. To make matters worse, the heroine actually had a car accident. I think the screenwriters had tried too hard for expected high tide, divorced from reality, and undermined the overall credibility of the whole story. The final score is 7 points.

A workplace drama most worthy of being translated into English
1 October 2021
I carefully rate each episode, and many episodes make me score 9 points with excitement. The reason is that this is the closest to reality in China's workplace. Its truth even makes me nervous, because every role seems to be alive in real life, or other people I have heard of. There are several conversations between the boss and the subordinates that I experienced personally. Thanks to the screenwriters for their efforts to restore the reality of Chinese workplace to the greatest extent (without distortion or beautification).

If audiences in English-speaking countries want to understand the current world of work of Chinese people, this series should be the best choice.

In this TV series, you can see the struggle for rights and interests between Chinese people, the rules of white-collar survival, the mutual use of employees and executives, the pressure of survival in first-tier cities, the over-caring of parents and relatives for unmarried people, and the problems of native families, two different paths for women to seek development, the bureaucratic style of state-owned enterprises and the dictatorship of the chairman of the board, and so on. Perhaps the imperfect thing is the ideal city.

Unattractive
30 May 2021
The director and screenwriter have great ambitions and want to express an adventure story through fairy tale shell. In terms of visual effects, they really did. For example, the animation at the beginning and the end of the movie, the narration of the girl, the architectural style and the bright colors make people feel that this is a scene in a fairy tale. Unfortunately, the overall story lacks attractiveness, and individual transitions appear inconsistent. Fortunately, the performance of actress like Jia Song (including the tigress) saved the movie. Whenever the little tiger interacts closely with Song, I am always happy and even slightly moved by them, urge to cry. Maybe it's because I also raised a little tiger (she is my cat daughter "Nian Nian").

Bad plot, beautiful theme song
15 August 2020
This story did not appeal to me. I even feel that this story does not clearly explain the historical background. It is a bit unfair to people who do not understand China's 1940-1950s history. The exaggerated tendentious expressions in the film are biased.

The advantage of this film is the beautiful theme song and the three leading actors who are full of youth, the collagen on their face leaves lovely memories. Their performances worked very hard, which laid the foundation for their ability to perform well in the future.

The composer Wang Ming's name "Ming" means drunk. He is really a talented artist who can transform ordinary materials into fascinating works. The two theme songs in this movie made me unforgettable. After listening to it, I felt like drinking traditional Chinese rice wine.

Daily life of Zhang contains laughter and tears
15 February 2020
This story tells daily life of a Beijing blue-collar family, their life changes between five brothers and sisters whose big brother called Zhang Damin. If you don't understand Beijing local dialect, you may not immediately understand the humor of Zhang Damin's various Playful words, but when you press the pause button and think back carefully, you will feel his optimistic attitude. I have been impressed countless times by his sense of responsibility and humor. I also admire his flexibility. Some of his misconducts (even minor offenses) reminded me of Shameless (2011) .When climax erupts in the last episode, we will know what have been happened behind to all these original humor.

In almost each episode, I experienced the process of joy, laughter, tears and contemplation. Personally, I think this is a story that reflects the living conditions of the vast majority of ordinary Chinese. Compared with TV series filmed in China after the 2010s, this one is more authentic and credible.

Ming Dynasty (2019–2020)

Surprised by Father-son relationship, compromise and more
25 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This TV series surprised me by 3 things.

First of all, members of the emperor family are full of Atmosphere of ordinary life. They no longer just get along with the etiquette of monarchs and courtiers, and the younger generations will even call the emperor or other elders by "daddy and mother". In the first 10 episodes, I was moved to tears many times by the emperor's father love and responsibility for 3 sons. This emotional climax occurred when the old emperor summoned his three sons and grandsons to cry and bleed blood as an alliance. They reviewed each other's growth and identified interdependent relationships. Although the temptation of ultimate rights did not allow future generations to honour their promises, the family relationship in that short reunion completely showed that the face of a royal family is no different from that of ordinary people. It can be seen that the first big advantage of this series is the high-level royal family are all human beings, and everyone is the same.

Second, reconciliation. This episode dramatizes the slaughter caused by the overthrow of the regime in the history of the Ming Dynasty. When the old emperor met with the pursued emperor (his nephew), the pursued emperor was already a monk. He saw the gains and losses of life and was relieved of his political defeat. He eventually said, "Everyone can reconcile with their unbearable past." This view is incompatible with Hardliners who advocates of revenge or war, but it has to be said that it is a feasible solution. This reminds me of the TV series Lang ya bang (2015) which is also a story of political struggle and injustice. The two happened in different times and adopted different solutions in completely opposite directions. Both of these fictional stories have implications for today's Chinese society. How to deal with the historical tragedy deserves everyone's consideration. In addition, the monarch should win the hearts and minds of the people, and the social system is not only unique to the royal family, but should pay attention to the wishes of the people. These all make this series worthy of appreciation!

The shortcoming is that some actors and actress in the last 20 episodes are unable to perform in right place. For example, the old queen mother acted like a girl. The character's age was completely out of touch with the actor's own age and the makeup could not be improved or compensated. It would be even more perfect to replace some older actors.

Literacy of the rule of law
9 June 2019
There may be some places in this TV series that are inconsistent with actual judicial common sense, but these can't hide its merits and representativeness.

First of all, "suspecting crimes from nothing" is an important core point of the film. This view may not be a fresh theory in the Western system of society, but there is still an acceptance process for the general public in China. The film reveals the phenomenon that frequently occurs in reality: the family of the victim takes it for granted that he is the murderer and demonstrates in public to exert pressure on the state organs.

Second, "reasonable doubt" is also an important concept. The film reflects the obedience education to parents and authority in Chinese family , which leads to the lack of doubtful courage and rationality when child grows up. Fortunately, the heroine is rebellious.

Finally, the film gave the audience enough optimism and spiritual support. Even if there have been any false and wrongful cases in history, these are historically limited. With the development of the times and the popularization of the rule of law, it will eventually improve. It teaches us that it takes time to establish a society ruled by law in China, and those who persist will eventually win the justice they deserve. Justice may be late, but it will never be absent!

A movie worth watching the second time
17 February 2019
When I watched this movie for the first time, I felt that it was difficult to understand immediately; but when I finished watching it, I couldn't help but clap my hands, and I couldn't wait to watch it again.

I had to Said this is a very good movie. This movie is a bit similar to the "Lust Caution" directed by Ang Lee. It has many connotations, many details, and complicated characters. Through this movie we can see the anxiety of Taiwan after the rich up in 1970s-1980s which like various social phenomena in China now, so this film has strong foresight and practical significance. I have changed the stereotype of the Taiwanese who are also each trying to cheat or outwit the other, saying dirty words, and sophisticated as the Chinese.

Innovative form of satirical comedy
7 February 2019
Known as the "Peace of Chinese Costumes Comedy", this TV series features imitation, satire and criticism of today's social phenomena through the daily stories of an ancient inn. The overall style is ridiculous and ironic.

For the first time, this TV series was handed over to the ancient plots with popular online buzzwords and various modern hot events. The bold attempts of the writers and directors gave the audience a refreshing experience, which was well received by the young Chinese audience, except for the conservative audience. Because of the large number of dialects used in the play, this is also a reason why viewers outside mainland China have difficulty understanding the effects of their comedy.

The entire TV series is full of positive energy and innovative.
