Close (I) (2022)
9/10
I ugly cried when she told him.
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Close is a film that tackles the complex issue of suicide and the struggles that come with it. Directed by Lukas Dhont, the film delves deep into the emotional core of the story, exploring the relationship between Leo and his best friend Remi. -yet I do have the slight suspicions that their friendship was beyond the palpable & obvious (attraction tension).

I won't spill much detail here. Needless to say, -while there was a continuity error in one of the critical scenes, it did not detract from the overall impact of the film. In fact, it was the film's ability to evoke such intense emotions in me that made it stand out. I found myself crying (off-on) for over 15 minutes, quite literally; feeling a mix of sadness, anger, vulnerability and frailty. It was truly a cathartic experience that left me feeling both drained and exhilarated (wow A24, you've done me again).

I had been crying on-off from the moment she (Leo's mother) changes her face to crying, literally for 15 minutes. -because I checked the time, I know.. As usually I have moments of crying, when in the scene or something. But wow, I had not cried this long with any film, this seems like a personal record almost!

Not only sad tears, but mostly angry tears. Also leaving me quasi vulnerable with such feelings of enervation & frailty. Wanting it to stop; to have more time; to let it not be true..

As mentioned, this film touches on themes of suicide, loss, and the importance of communication; also making it an emotionally charged and thought-provoking film.

It surely is a worthy candidate for the Academy Awards (Oscars), as it is a testament to the power of cinema to move and inspire. I would rate it a 9 out of 10, but I have a feeling this may change as the film continues to sink in my mind.

In conclusion, Close (2023) is a must-watch film for fans of drama, and emotionally charged films. It is a powerful film that will leave a lasting impression. The film's production values are top-notch. With its powerful storytelling, stunning cinematography, and fantastic performances, (as stated) the film is a tour de force that deserves to be recognized at the Oscars. Whether you're a fan of A24 films or just a lover of great film, it is sure to leave a lasting impact on all who watch it, you won't want to miss this film. J.
