Speak No Evil (2022)
Last act failure, once again.
This is definitely a film of two halves. The first half of the film is a wonderful building of suspense not dissimilar to 'Funny Games'. A sense of dread that builds without anything specific to put your finger on but keeps you engaged.
The final act, however, is atrocious. Like many horror movies it asks the watcher to suspend their disbelief to a level that the film hasn't earned. It puts the effort on the viewer to try and imagine what the inner monologue of the protagonists could be to cause them to be so passive and accepting of their fate.
It also doesn't explain anything about the motivations of the antagonists. The final act could possibly have been saved if the film explained their actions, but the watcher is just left with too many questions for it to be a compelling experience.
4/10 - Extremely disappointing.
You (2018)
A difficult session to sum up
The real issue with this season of You is that by the end I couldn't tell who I wanted to live and who I wanted to die. Victoria Pedretti gave such an incredible performance in this series that I couldn't help but want her to survive to see how far she'd really go.
The pendulum swings back and forth between love & hate between each episode, and some of the earlier episodes did feel a little like filler.
Overall though, enough twists and turns to make it a gripping watch, but it doesn't feel like closure. If that's the intention the writers did a fantastic job.
You: Hands Across Madre Linda (2021)
Pretty decent episode.
Just reviewing here to balance out the poor triggered folks who are trying to review bomb it.
The quality is moving a little downhill, but these aren't 1/10 episodes. The fragile anti-vax folk are really struggling with this concept.
Hoping Love doesn't just keep on piling up bodies though, since it's starting to get a little over the top. Hopefully the remainder of the season will take a bit more of a break from that.
You: Missing White Woman Syndrome (2021)
I wondered why this one scored so low.
Admittedly it's not the greatest storyline in the show, and it did feel forced together so loses a few points for that. But for those reading reviews, it's triggered some reactionary individuals into giving scores of 1 or 2. Disregard the noise and continue as normal.
It's filler, it's oddly written, but it's not a 1/10.
