Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
Dumpster fire
First I will tell you the reason that I give this episode a two star review instead of a one. Bradley Walsh. The scene with Graham reconnecting who with his wife at their home was pretty powerful, thanks to Walsh's exquisite acting. Welp, that's it, that's the good.
Now the bad: The riders seem to think that everyone in the world is constantly in a political frenzy. Not only a political frenzy, but a politically correct, Liberal, hot button issue frenzy. WAKE UP! No one actually cares that much. We watch Sci fi to escape real life, Not to be preached to like we are every single day on every media outlet.
The writers are quickly loosing a huge part of their fan base. You know why? Because the show is very pretentious and it treats its audience like it's stupid. Having a character that is so obviously based on Trump and all of the right wing strawman Portrayals is just unnecessary. The show honestly feels like a freaking political ad and smear campaign. It's socks now. RIP dr who.
Doctor Who: Rosa (2018)
What is this?
I like how they threw in a completely pointless alien villain just to still be sci fi. I mean really, did anyone even understand the villains motivation, goal, backstory ect?
In previous seasons, the villains were all complex. They had their own motivations that were just in their mind, and the doctor did his best to understand them. And this season they are all just black and white bad guys Who are just evil for no reason.
I hate to say this again, but it really does seem like they are way too concerned with social justice points than actual substance of writing. I'll probably get a lot of thumbs down for making that statement but who cares. This season just isn't that good, period.
Doctor Who: The Ghost Monument (2018)
Much better!
This was a good episode. Writing is still a bit lacking in some areas, but was far better than the first episode. Jodie felt more natural in the role as the doctor and you can tell she's more comfortable in this one.
I cared about the fate of our hero's and even the two side characters. Good development, good pacing, good CGI and a heartfelt ending. Things are looking up!
Doctor Who: The Woman Who Fell to Earth (2018)
Not what I hoped for
It seems to me that the writers were more focused on diversity quotas than actual substance. The characters were flat and one dimensional and the story was on par with your mediocre middle-of-the-season episode. Because the characters lacked depth, I was very bored by the middle act, catching myself scrolling Facebook and not really caring about what happened to any of them.
I will say that I think Jodie can be great as the doctor, she has energy and wit. However, if the writers keep hoping to attain social justice points rather than actual emotions depth of story and true humor, then her doctor will be severely handicapped.
I gave the episode a four-star review because of cinematography, Jodie's potential and the villain looking cool. Hopefully the writing gets better or else we're in for a boring season with a potentially great doctor.
