One of the main criticisms I've heard about this film is that it's slow. Well, so is trying to capture a tiger?
Heavily grounded in reality and authentically simplistic, Sherni is definitely one of my favorites of 2021 so far. Not just Bollywood, but in general. Directed by Amit Masurkar who directed the hard hitting Oscar submitted film Newton, he directs Sherni with the utmost simplicity.
There are no crazy shots, no high strung stunts, nothing too dramatic- instead Amit opts for static shots whenever he can. He used handheld sparingly. People walk through the forest, people talk- and surprisingly that's enough.
Man Vs. Nature is at the center here but my main takeaway from this film is the Woman vs. Man, Nature. Vidya Balan, who is the real 'Sherni' in this film gives a great performance. Grounded in reality, she doesn't yell. She never raises her voice. She simply exists in this sexist world.
The sexism isn't in your face. Yes, it does have some out there moment but most of the time, we see subtle reference to sexism which Vidya catches and some viewers do. Idk if that's the metaphor but Vidya's character Vidya is the tigress. She slowly observes, waiting to pounce even though the world doesn't let her pounce.
Idk I'm just blabbing at this point but Sherni just was incredibly well done. Vidya Balan, you're my favorite actress. I love you. I live for you.
