Sherni (2021)
10/10
Simple, Realistic and Immersive.
18 June 2021
One of the main criticisms I've heard about this film is that it's slow. Well, so is trying to capture a tiger?

Heavily grounded in reality and authentically simplistic, Sherni is definitely one of my favorites of 2021 so far. Not just Bollywood, but in general. Directed by Amit Masurkar who directed the hard hitting Oscar submitted film Newton, he directs Sherni with the utmost simplicity.

There are no crazy shots, no high strung stunts, nothing too dramatic- instead Amit opts for static shots whenever he can. He used handheld sparingly. People walk through the forest, people talk- and surprisingly that's enough.

Man Vs. Nature is at the center here but my main takeaway from this film is the Woman vs. Man, Nature. Vidya Balan, who is the real 'Sherni' in this film gives a great performance. Grounded in reality, she doesn't yell. She never raises her voice. She simply exists in this sexist world.

The sexism isn't in your face. Yes, it does have some out there moment but most of the time, we see subtle reference to sexism which Vidya catches and some viewers do. Idk if that's the metaphor but Vidya's character Vidya is the tigress. She slowly observes, waiting to pounce even though the world doesn't let her pounce.

Idk I'm just blabbing at this point but Sherni just was incredibly well done. Vidya Balan, you're my favorite actress. I love you. I live for you.

Funny, bleak and confusing- a great mixture
20 January 2021
Caroline Williams retweeted and replied to my tweet so that pretty much made up for all the crap that happened to me in 2020.

Plus this film is WEIRD, nihilistic and funny- HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend if you love all thing macabre and gross and confusing. I was absolutely enthralled throughout.

Also Williams gives the performance of a lifetime. Hopefully she gets a Fangoria Chainsaw Award or a SATURN award!!

It's so nice to see an older horror icon in a full on lead performance in a horror film.

Ready or Not (I) (2019)
10/10
Just about Perfect
22 August 2019
You know how once in a while a movie releases that completely exceeds your expectations and then blows you away. A movie that just makes your whole day turn around. READY OR NOT is definitely that movie.

What could have been a very straightforward slasher film about our heroine surviving the night of brutality turns into this twisted dark humorous and somewhat supernatural ride. The movie is simply astounding, the kills are gory and then the suspense, oh how it builds and how it makes you care so much about Samara Weaving's character.

The whole day I had been feeling pretty down but after watching this, all I can think about is how good this film was. I think it's definitely up there with 'You're Next' in the 'surprisingly amazing horror' category.

Samara Weaving has made me believe that she can do no wrong. Her comedy timing, her murdery rage as well as all her scared scenes are so natural. We should just go ahead and enlist her in the Scream Queens hall of fame (along with Jessica Rothe of Happy Death Day fame). The whole cast brilliantly supports the story by giving a taste of weirdness and quirkiness.

Damn, this movie is good. I highly recommend it. It's so Fun. So brilliant in it's execution.

8/10. You know what change that to a 10/10. I loved it so so so much!

The Handmaid's Tale: God Bless the Child (2019)
Season 3, Episode 4

Amazingly Done
12 June 2019
Oh my god! How beautiful this episode was. The Handmaid's Tale doesn't fail to amaze me. The best part of the whole episode is Janine, played so beautifully by Madeline Brewer. Then there's Ann Dowd who incorporates this humanness in Aunt Lydia who should be despised but we just can't despise her because Ann Dowd plays her that way.

My favorite part is the dinner scene, You will know when you see the episode. The whole scene is well acted, filled with tension.

And the subplot with Emily reuniting with her family is also very touching.

I just which they'd do a flashback episode for Aunt Lydia and Janine. They are such good characters.

A start of a beautiful friendship
7 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie follows Ann Atwater (Taraji P. Henson), a civil rights activist in Durham, North Carolina, who battles with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) leader C. P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell) for a decade until 1971, when the two agree to co-chair a two-week community meeting to deal with a court-ordered school desegregation decree, which changes both of their lives.

Since last year, we have seen movies about the start of a friendship between a white and a black person (Green Book). While this movie is also about the friendship between two main characters, this movie is nothing like Green Book. Green Book was problematic, focusing on the 'white savior' trope whilst this movir has a fleshed out narrative with both the character being their own person. And guess what, both of them save each other. She saves him from his racist mindset and he saves her and the black community by learning acceptance.

The best thing about this movie is the acting. Powerhouse performances by Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell. They bring out the emotions and the human-ness in this real life personalities. But mostly, I have to commend Taraji, she steals whatever scenes she is in. Also, Anne Heche, no matter how little she is on screen, is brilliant. Also, the direction and the production design of this movie is fantastic. I love all tghe 70s costume and the makeup in this film.

My only complaint has to be that there's more emphasis on C.P. Ellis than on Ann Atwater. I agree that the story is about how he comes into term with acceptance but given the powerful performance by Taraji, I wanted more of her. In the end, you are left with wanting more of her.

Altogether, this is a beautiful film and I am happy with the story and the portrayal of an interracial friendship than I ever was with Green Book.

The Act (2019)
10/10
Brilliant, Chilling and Intriguing
20 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, the very idea of Munchausen by Proxy has always fascinated me. I kept on researching about it and learning about it. I came across the case of the Blanchards and was immediately interested. Now when I heard that there was going to be a TV series based on the real life story, I was excited.

And good gracious, this show doesn't disappoint. I watched the first two episode right after it dropped and was hooked! The direction and the cinematography is simply phenomenal. But what really got me and made me impressed was the acting and the production design.

Let's start with the production design. I know it may seem unusual but as an aspiring film student with an interest on production design, I was impressed by how the house looked so much like where the crimes happened. The makeup is simply brilliant and the actors almost look like their real life counterparts. The clothes that Gypsy wears, is identical/similar to what she wore in real life.

The other best thing is the acting. Great performances all around. Stating the obvious, Patricia Arquette and Chloe Sevigny are always awesome and they shine in their roles as Dee Dee and the neighbor, Mel. But someone who surprised me was Joey King. Having seen her in stuff like The Kissing Booth, I was skeptical but she completely embodies Gypsy. She is no longer Joey King, she is Gypsy now. Her voice, her walk and her talk is not hers now, it's Gypsy's. I will call it right now, she is gonna get nominated for an Emmy.

Overall; this is a really fascinating series and can't wait for the future episodes. It's chilling. And if you are a fan of good acting, then I highly recommend this.

A new show within the show we love
9 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of ONCE without Emma, Snow and others might sound weird but trust me it's not. The show takes place in a new place, it has a new curse and some new cast members but this is the same show we love. The Henry we know has grown up, the Evil Queen has a new persona and Hook is a cop. The most interesting thing was Rumple. I like how they didn't change him and he's still a good-bad person. Also, this episode just paves the way for future episodes and that's why they don't disclose much. It's still a good show and I will not stop watching this.

Excellent Episode with a sad+happy ending
27 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS.

I loved this episode titled 'Page 23'. This episode feels like the episodes from Season 1 where one character was emphasized more. In this episode, we see the backstory of Regina/Evil Queen. The flashback mirrors some previous episodes where our Queen is trying to find whereabouts of Snow. But then it escalates to something else. It shows who Regina hates and it's herself.

Then in the present day we see a battle between Regina and Evil Queen. And at last the Queen chapter is closed. We see how Regina embraces her dark side with Queen embracing her good side. And here, the evil part gets her happy ending too.

The Hook/Emma part is super sad. Emma finds Hook's secret and Hook decides to sail far away from Emma but then well, no spoilers but it's a sad ending.

Overall, this episode is a good one. The acting is great. We have flashbacks! And lot of storyline is getting intense. I applaud Lana Parilla. She's so great and don't forget to get tissues as the end will make you cry.
