Knuckles (2024)
7/10
Quite good fun
27 April 2024
I didn't know this series was even coming out before it popped up on the streaming service, it was a pleasant to see it there a few days ago.

Pro's:

Idris Elba makes Knuckles stand out like he did in the previous Sonic film, he's got a perfect voice for the character and sounds like he is really enjoying it.

Adam Philly also put in a good performance as Wade, he plays one of those love-able but not confident people really well.

I would have liked to see more Knuckles in the show as a lot of the story is about Wade, though a good amount of time is also spent on their burgeoning friendship so that's alright.

The rest of the cast also put in a good show, as well as Cary Elwes who I didn't expect to see pop up. The same goes for Julian Barratt who I know from The Mighty Boosh.

The VFX was also top notch and nothing felt out of place and the sound design was decent as well.

### Cons:

The few cons that would have earned it an 8 were just not having enough Knuckles in it. It could also have done with the tightening of the pacing. Especially the last episode. I felt like that one was too short and didn't show enough of the fight with the bad dude.

The last nit-pick I have is that the ending is very similar to the end of Sonics' first movie.

Never thought I'd see it in a movie, but, now I have...
21 April 2024
While the visuals can be quite nice in places, it lacks enough plot to make it worthwhile as an overall film. It feels like so much time was wasted on unnecessary elements, most of which should have been established in the previous entry.

It also suffers from the worst of Snyder's tendencies, which we all know by now, and probably should've been edited differently as the pacing wasn't great.

I personally felt that the first movie should've dealt with much of the characters bonding and backstory, mainly because out of two films we barely know anything about the motives of either faction and the movie hints at a lot more under the surface, it just doesn't ever get around to telling or showing any of it.

I never thought I'd see it in a movie (partly because it's not something I ever thought would be in a movie), but, slow-motion corn harvesting is that thing! Life is now complete.

Overall, while it had some pretty shots and VFX, it was a lacklustre experience with too many narrative and pacing problems to move it much past the 5* mark. These last two movies are why Zack Snyder is a director that needs someone to reign him in from time to time.

Snyder once said he doesn't use slow-mo that much, but this movie alone has enough slow-mo that you could play four of five action movies by other directors, and they would still have less than this one does.

Morbius (2022)
6/10
Another of Sony's adventures in the not-R-rated, but totally should be series...
6 April 2022
I'm still of the opinion that Venom, Venom 2 and Morbius should have all been rated above PG13. I'm not expecting grimdark or anything, but it just seems that a vampire movie should have at least some blood in it when some very pointy fingers slash someone across the neck?

The acting was decent all round, and Matt Smith and Jared Leto looked like they were both having some fun with their roles, but Jared Harris was under utilized. Origin story wise, the film got it over pretty quick, and the rest of it could've done with fleshing a few things out a little bit more than the short runtime allowed.

I don't think Morbius was a bad movie, but it wasn't great either, and there's times where trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible just doesn't work.

Poignant, but unuanced/unfocussed in places
20 December 2021
Quite an interesting documentary to watch, it does highlight the state of affairs with crony-capitalism and how it's making us point fingers at each other, rather than a bunch of massive global corporations which are reaping huge profits off the back of our taxes and simultaneously lowing our standards of living. We've been sold out by people in our governments, and will be worked to death to fund what amounts to corporate socialism.

It does lose focus at points, and repeats in a few places but overall I did enjoy watching it.

Superman & Lois (2021–2024)
8/10
Pretty decent, but has a few pacing issues
22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I started out without much hope for this, especially seeing as CW have gone down the path of the broketh. I was pleasantly surprised though, as it does a fairly good job of portraying Superman on his "off days" and the family drama stuff isn't too much for me to turn off.

However, there are pacing issues with the show, and I'd say that some of the arcs could have been stretched out over a few episodes rather than most of the villains being wrapped up by episode end. I guess the storyline between Superman and Edge is an overall series arc, but it felt like they were chewing through things a bit too fast to make an impact.

The acting is okay for the most part, Lois could do with a bit more toning down but Clarke does play a convincing Superman and brings a level of humanization to the character, the boys aren't too bad, neither are the girlfriend and most of the supporting cast.

Enjoyable, I had rated it one start higher but took one off due to the pacing and a few other nitpicks I had.

Chewing gum for the eye's -
19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I quite liked the concept for this film, it had some interesting ideas but was undone by a third act that was a bit... silly.

What I couldn't believe was that after he comes back with the toxin that would end the war, the government just says, nope, there's nothing we can do now that the machine is broken. That is of course after they had sent thousands upon thousands of people to their death through forced drafting. I know the time machine thing was broken, but the toxin could've been prepared so that when the time came it would've made easy work of the coming war, I mean, it's not like they didn't know it was coming in 20-30 years time - and after wasting all those lives you'd think they would at least entertain the idea.

After they're back a new mission is launched (unofficially) by a few individuals to find the initial invasion point in the current time, a very underprepared mission might I add - one which could've lead to an earlier war than planned, and with not enough toxin prepared to even do anything meaningful about it. It goes to plan, somehow... but then the official that shut everything down when Pratt comes back takes credit for it all, so that's probably quite accurate with politicians, but still a bit annoying.

Overall, I did like the design of the aliens, they were done very well and didn't look like obvious CGI creatures. The sound design was decent, and the twist with Muri was also pretty cool. It was a fun couple hours while watching it and I didn't end up browsing the web halfway through, which I tend to do if a movie bores me so that's usually a win for me. The cast was also quite enjoyable, and think that the people who worked on the film did a good job - the writers dropped the ball a bit though, the ending should've been thought through a bit more.

As I said in the title, it was good chewing gum for the eyes, keeps you occupied but doesn't break any new grounds.
