Rien à foutre (2021)
So real it must have been written by crew
For anyone who has been crew this film feels like a documdrama and Adèle Exarchopoulos plays the role with despondent perfection. Her character is like the beautiful older sister you've always admired who gets treated like a corporate punching bag - the exhaustion, the lonlieness, the transient flying friends, the 'churn and burn' employment model ... it goes on. The mysogynistic Base Supervisor is so realistic one wanted to reach through the screen and strangle him. A big plus for this film was filming in a real 737 because it gave complete reality to the claustrophobia, the neverending lack of privacy, and quiet despair at one's jumpseat as beautiful moments out of reach passed by the window. Here's hoping Dubai was everything Cassandre needed it to be.
Our Boys (2019)
Fighting the good fight
Exceptional drama which takes a closeup look at the common ground between different communities who seek justice in the face of fanaticism. Excellent acting all round particularly Shlomi Elkabetz, Johnny Arbid, and Noa Koler. The use of Hebrew and Arabic preserves authenticity and sophistication. Another great Israeli story (see 'Fauda', 'Walk on Water' for others) getting the global audience it deserves.
God's Not Dead (2014)
Atheists inspired me to see this film
I'd like to thank all the atheists (especially those who wrote "God" with a capital "G") for their inspiring vitriol. The sheer volume of hateful reviews made me seek out this film and I'm so glad I did.
This is a pleasant, family friendly, but also thought provoking film. Some of the more complex arguments, such as scenes where Josh pointed out flaws in the reasoning of some famous scientists, were clever and easy to understand.
I did feel that the resolution of some major character story lines became trivialised when more time was given to a rock group performance than a dying person. Professor Radisson's departure was far too simplistic. However, I wonder if the makers of the film intended it to be a much more simpler story than the stronger film it turned out to be.
Courage in the face of adversity is a major theme and there is something in the story for everybody.
The Killing (2011)
Perfection brings people back to TV
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
I haven't watched a TV show in years that had me gasp, or wide eyed, or desperately wanting the lead character to overcome the odds.
Everything about this show is perfect. I too watch every episode multiple times because the story is intelligent and the characters worth our attention.
The show's greatest strength lies in the sheer humanity of it's characters as they grapple with their own spiritual crises. Each faces an inner battle of strength versus weakness while slowly realising that their personal redemption (or condemnation) can be found in those closest to them.
Vancouver/Seattle is as much a lead character as the people who move within it. Night, rain, grey skies and mist say so much more than sunshine.
Will be so sad to see this season and story arc come to an end but I'm grateful that we've had such a worthy journey and that they chose not to give us the killer at the end of season one. Thank you Veena Sud for giving us smart TV and a perfect cast.
Here's hoping The Killing is picked up for another season because I'm sure there's plenty of mileage left in that picture Linden found on her fridge door.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Lives up to every positive review
I headed to the late showing tonight and was pleased to find this movie lived up to every positive review I've seen or read.
There is reason to compare Adamson and Peter Jackson, they have a rare ability to deliver on faithful re-creation of the literary into the cinematic.
The movie delivers on the allegory, and yet again the New Zealand landscape shows fantasy can be real.
For all those anti-Christian, Santa hating folk out there...go see it, let Aslan breathe on you.
"Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a simple children's story, that didn't leave a single adult eye dry in the house tonight.
