A geeky labour of love
27 July 2021
I am a MOTU fan ever since my parents gave me a Talon fighter fo my birthday (yes, I am that old). It was love at first play. Since then I heard pretty much all the radio plays, read all the mini comics, the German comics and saw most of the original Filmation series.

When I heard that Mark Hamill (THE Mark Hamill kids!) plays Skeletor and Kevin Smith is involved I was stoked! Not to mention Jason Mewes and THE Henry Rollins.

Honestly, I have no idea what I expected. It sounds like most other reviewers thought Smith and team would just reheat their childhood memories and teleport them back to a time when all we worried about was sitting on the sofa with a hot chocolate. That is not it I am afraid.

No, what Kevin Smith did here is so much more. His attention to detail and geekiness (there are Star Wars references) is incredible. We meet all our heroes again, but with a new seriousness and depth. They are angry, sad, traumatised and feel cheated. Wow! It seems we all grew old together in the last 30 odd years. I instantly fell and felt for them again.

I love this show! I believe that the enraged fans where not able to grow and enjoy characters that evolved as well. This show is not for children anymore but for the adults we became (and for the children in us that are still there hoping that the magic comes back at one point).

There will be laughs and heartbreak. Also, it is bad for your bank account. I just ordered the action figures. So maybe the 12 year old me is still in there.
