The Flash (2023)
Better than expected
A good mix of action, adventure and comedy. I liked the script, but would have preferred if they followed the comic at least a little closer. Still, this version worked okay. Smart solutions to some problems. Quite a few scenes with funny moments, without it turning overly silly. Some drama scenes that felt very touching. Most of the action scenes felt good and well produced. The movie felt immersive, interesting and had very few slow parts. However, it took a long time to get to the final threat and that part was over quite quickly. Overall I was happy with the movie but even though Ezra Miller tried his best, he still doesn't feel right as Flash. I don't like when they portray Flash as clumsy, socially awkward and inexperienced. Grant Gustin (TV series Flash) would have been better for the role.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Underwhelming
First off: I'm a huge fan of superhero movies in general and I like both Marvel and DC, so this is not a case of taking sides or comparing with the content from the other company.
I've liked most Marvel movies so having to admit that Ant-Man 3 was underwhelming is hard for me. I looked forward to it a lot but it just didn't fulfill my expectations, especially since I enjoyed the first two Ant-Man movies.
I felt the plot was weak and quite weird. Something of an explanation just to introduce the concept of Kang the Conqueror. That guy definitely needed a better introduction and story, he was just too anonymous here even though I know him from the comics. They didn't succeed here.
Also, the actors that played Cassie and Kang felt bad compared to the other actors.
I had high hopes for the other villain (no spoilers here), but sadly they made him more of a joke and wasted his potential. In the comics he's a powerful opponent but here the director just wasted him. Bad character portrait, big disappointment.
The movie definitely had cool moments and effects but overall it just didn't contribute much worth to the MCU except introducing an upcoming threat.
Extraordinary (2023)
Extraordinary funny!
Maybe I have weird humor but I plowed through this whole series in just one afternoon (easily done since it's just 4.5 hours in total) and I just laughed way more than I have done in years! The characters are interesting and you quickly get attached to them. The script is funny and strange but captivating, the actors do a marvelous job and everything feels very natural and somehow it all makes sense, yet the humor is weirdly absurd and just plain bonkers and I LOVE it! It's an ordinary story about a girl trying to find her place in the crazy world. In-between the constant jokes and absurdity there is also lots of sincerity and serious, touching scenes. I was both entertained and deeply moved by it all.
Also, the pace is quite fast. I felt that each episode contained so MANY things, hardly anything feels like a boring transport between things. It's a rollercoaster and I'm so up for it.
So why don't I give this show a 10? Well, it was only 9 episodes for 30 minutes each. I DEMAND more of this. Now. Or even yesterday. Waiting impatiently for season 2 now and I will be kicking and screaming and shouting obscene profanities if they don't make season 2. I need more of this.
Lockwood & Co. (2023)
Interesting and mysterious!
The major fault with this show is that the trailer doesn't do it justice, which might explain why it might get cancelled (much to my disappointment). Sure, the trailer felt a little interesting but I could
easily have skipped the show too, I didn't feel that the trailer enticed me enough. Still, I gave it a chance and I'm happy I did because I quickly got pulled into this new world of ghosts being a part of our world and how people handle it. The story is interesting and clever, there are plenty of mysteries and riddles that we only get a glimpse of, which tells us there is plenty more to discover in this ghostly and dangerous world. The characters are likeable, the actors are good, the environments are fitting and the music is VERY good and really strengthens the overall impression. You really should give this show a chance, and so should Netflix!
House of the Dragon (2022)
Better than Game of Thrones!
I really liked Game of Thrones. Had no real expectations regarding this new show, so I went in having seen only one trailer.
Halfway into the first episode, I could feel how tense my body was. The episode was exciting and ominous. I felt invested, more than I ever was with Game of Thrones. This was something similar, yet different. A downside with Game of Thrones for me was that the story was so fractured, jumping between several houses and separate storylines. House of the dragon is much more focused, showing only house Targaryen and it's interesting to see more of what happened before Game of Thrones.
After just two episodes I feel more hooked on this show than with Game of Thrones. However, the quality of actors, photo, music, sound and script feel just as tight as Game of Thrones. The big difference is the more narrow focus, but I feel it's a big improvement.
I eagerly await the upcoming episodes!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Enjoyed it tremendously!
As a true Marvel fan (and a man), it's a pure joy to finally see She-Hulk come to cinematic life like this! She's always been a cool hero in the comics and I feel they translated her very well to this TV show! I don't get why people (mostly men?) hate her and this show so much, I think it's just the common "angry men who hates women" thing? They should get over it, they're just misogynistic! If you like Marvel and want to see a cool girl be a cool female Hulk, this is it! The only downside is that they release the episodes one at a time instead of the whole season right away...I want more, now! RAAARGH!
Morbius (2022)
People give this movie too much hate
I've seen very mixed reviews about this movie and I don't understand why many people dislike it so much. The trailer is very true to the movie. If you don't like the trailer, just don't see the movie, okay? It's a good action movie with cool effects, but you probably shouldn't see it unless you're a Marvel fan. And it really isn't worth just 1 out of 10, that would mean the movie is utter crap, and it definitely isn't. People here are so extreme with their grades. I had a good time with this movie, the actors were good, I liked the story, the action and special effects were good...I just wish they could have shown us a little more. It felt like it was over too quickly. There could have been more to tell. For me, this was a solid 8. I liked it and would like to see it again, as is often the case for me when it comes to Marvel movies, since I'm a big Marvel fan. If you're not a Marvel fan, you can probably skip this movie. The bonus scenes don't really make any sense though...even if you've already seen the latest Spider-Man movie. Many plot holes there and just weird connections that doesn't really work.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Okay movie but bad version of Mandarin
Mandarin, in the Marvel comics, is a very powerful villain with truly awesome powers. Once again, Marvel destroy that opportunity and replaces Mandarin with "some random dude with completely different powers". It was still a good movie, but I really hate that they never get Mandarin right, as a villain.
Ragnarok (2020)
Can't get enough of this!
This show is VERY good! The actors do a very good job (I highly recommend to see it in the original Norwegian language), the story is interesting with several twists but it is a slow-burner so have patience. It still builds suspense in a very good way. I felt very involved with the characters and binge-watched it. The only downside would be that it's sometimes a little too slow, and that each season only has 6 episodes and it takes a long time until the next season comes. I hope that it gets at least 1-2 more seasons, there's still much to tell! Really looking forward to see the rest!
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
95% drama, 5% scary, 100% slow
I went into this series expecting quite a horrifying story and lots of scares...but there wasn't much of that really. In a way, I'm relieved there wasn't, since I don't really like to be scared. My initial thought was that I would give it a chance, get scared and stop watching it. But since I wasn't, I actually watched it all. So why the low grade then? Well, the actors were good but the tempo was quite slow and it was very confusing lots of times. Had it been more straightforward, I would have given it a higher grade. I wouldn't classify this series as pure horror. It's more like 95% drama and love story, and only 5% horror, and that small horror isn't even very scary (and that's coming from a person who doesn't even like horror to begin with). So if you go into this with less expectations, and if you're okay with slow stories that are sometimes confusing...then you might like it more. But I felt a little disappointed about it and also felt that it was a little wasteful of my time. I also disliked the ending.
Young Wallander (2020)
Laughably bad
The acting is bad and stiff. The pronounciation of the names is a disaster. I'm Swedish, so I should know. I thought Swedish movies were bad but this is a Swedish movie in English. It's a complete joke and doesn't deserve attention.
ThunderCats Roar (2020)
Complete crap, no respect for the source material
I loved the original Thundercats. I liked the new animé-inspired version too. But this...this is just heresy. Thundercats should be mainly about action, with some humor, and it should look good. This is plain ugly, mostly about humor and overall just silly. If this is what kids want today, then today's kids are STRANGE, I say. The remake of She-Ra was different but still good and it respected the source material. This...looks like it was made for four-year-olds...and made BY four-year-olds! Horrible!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Hardcore fans will always complain
Just saw this movie and I'm very satisfied. I have read a few common complaints and I just don't agree. It seems hardcore fans will never be satisfied. It amazes me that they even see the new movies. Well, I enjoyed the movie. Nice music, fantastic effects, good action, good story, a nice ending to the saga. If you're hardcore you will probably whine about it like all other rabid and toxic fans, but if you "just" like good sci-fi, you will probably like this.
I've had enough of the toxic fan base.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
A fan of the music, now a fan of the movie
Well, first of all I think I need to explain where I stand when it comes to Queen:
When Queen was active I was too young to actually be really aware of them and to be a real fan. However, I still came in contact with their wonderful music, especially through the movie Highlander, so it was only natural that I explored the band further and their music has meant a lot to me when I grew up but most of my life I've been a "sleeper fan" of Queen. I like their music a lot but I haven't spent much time actually listening to them.
Still, my love for their music is real, so when I saw the trailer it only took me 2-3 seconds to realize which movie it was and that I just needed to see it. Since then, I've waited very impatiently for the movie and I couldn't wait to see it. Especially since I never got a fair chance to see Queen perform live.
It's an understatement to say that the movie sucked me in. It absorbed me completely. It's been ages since I was this much INSIDE a movie...and by the gods, I LOVED IT!
Sure, there's nothing that is ever quite perfect, so in all honesty, maybe I should rate the movie something like 8-9 out of 10, but I also weigh in my emotions here and since I love the movie and wanted to see it again right away the moment I was leaving the cinema, and since I have had Queen music on constant repeat inside my head ever since I saw the movie...well, for me that's a solid 10.
I loved the story, the actors were great, the script was smart and funny, the music was of course wonderwul (hey, of course one likes it, otherwise one doesn't go see a movie like this), the tempo was good. And I cried several times. Because hell, why not. I love Queen and I love Freddie Mercury's voice.
However, that doesn't mean the movie was perfect. I think they exaggerated Mercury's teeth, it bugged me from the start and through the whole movie. They largely ignored that Mercury was bisexual and not gay. I dislike that they changed some of the historic details about the band. Not everything was correct, and why did they even change it? Why not tell the full story, and the full truth? I also would have liked to see even more of the things the band experienced.
But even so, I still love the movie and encourage every Queen fan to go see it. And if you're not a Queen fan but still want to see an interesting story about one of the most special bands in the world, try it out.
I heartedly recommend this movie...but I'm also very biased this time. ;)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)
A pleasant surprise!
Let's be fair: This is not a perfect masterpiece movie that will win any Oscars, ever. But that's okay, because it doesn't want to either! So what kind of movie is it? Well, if you ever liked the Turtles comics and/or the TV shows...or even the earlier movies (I didn't), I think you will actually like this movie a lot.
Why? Because it has all the key ingredients that made the Turtles concept work in the first place. Sure, some of the actors are downright BAD (the police chief comes to mind), but who cares when they're not really relevant to the plot? So please ignore the few faults this movie has and just enjoy it for all the good things it gets right. And it does.
I was impressed by the trailers, I was even more impressed by the movie itself, but I can't tell you all the things I liked about it, because then I would spoil half the movie and you don't want that.
So it all boils down to this: If you don't like Turtles, don't see this movie. If you DO like Turtles, you owe it to yourself to see this movie, or you will regret it. And if you just want to see a really cool action movie with nice effects, stunts and fights...well, then you should see this movie.
It's not the best movie I have ever seen, but it sure as heck entertained me and made me very, very happy. This is what all the other Turtles movies SHOULD have been!
The Fountain (2006)
Complete and utter CRAP, total waste of time!
***Contains SPOILERS***
I disliked this movie so much that I decided to write my first review here, to warn others about this bad movie!
Judging by the trailer, "The Fountain" looks really cool and features action, adventure, romance and sci-fi:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDp-F3Y97ZQ
However, judging by the reviews here, this is "a complex art movie". I hate "art movies". Not because I don't understand them but because they are always so BAD. I want a movie to be an entertaining and good story about SOMETHING. With a descent start, a good momentum and/or an interesting story, and a proper ending (hopefully a good ending, but I can settle for a bad ending too, if it's done well). This movie has nothing of that.
Instead, it contains three different stories...and it tries to tell all the stories at the same time, time-hopping between them a lot more than is healthy for any story (or audience, for that matter). The "expedition story" is a little interesting but of no real importance to the movie. The "love story" is...well, lame and boring (I'm totally okay with love stories, but this one is just bad). And the "future story" is just...confusing. Now, piece those stories together and you have 90 minutes of confusing and boring CRAP.
It's beyond me how anyone can actually LIKE this movie, since there's almost nothing GOOD with it! People must be out of their minds. I sincerely hope that Darren Aronofsky's other movies are better than this. At least they can't be WORSE than this, that's for sure.
