The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
I gave it a 6
OK I watched this as a 30 something year old who remembers the original television show. This story has well and truly been slammed straight into the window that is the naughties.First of all I must say that this is definitely worth the watch and not the worst film ever made.Thare were lots of laughs to be had and it definitely was not boring. The acting was all good too.The film was fast paced and frantic.
However, maybe I am just turning into an old geezer like my dad but good as this film was and funny as it was there was something missing or lost for me.I think what it was was the fact that I liked the original TV show BECAUSE it was quirky and silly and the effects were quirky and silly and this film for me lacked the raw energy that for me made the original work.I liked the original rubbish special effects, thats part of why it was so funny. What is left after this rawness has been taken out is a good film, but not by any means a classic. The original TV programme was raw comedy at its best that came around at the right time slap bang at the beginning of the eighties. This is a funny film that is well acted but without half as much impact as the other.
The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
Pretty good
The Bourne Supremacy was a sequel with a difference, in the light of the fact that it was also a great film.Bourne ( Damon) is taken back to his nightmare when an investigation into the assassin project leads to him being framed.First of all this sequel is pretty different in many ways to the original, probably owing more than anything to the change of director. The acting was again very good, and the storyline and overall mix of action and suspense worked well.
Personally however this film for my liking didn't have the magic of the Bourne Identity. For even though it was a great sequel I thought the storyline wasn't as good; the action sequences were not as good and the general theme of the film was more action based, rather than character driven.Only probably compared to the original film.
However that said ( and dusted) this film is amazing and so much better than the usual modern day dribble of action films we usually find ourselves watching. That is why I voted it an 8 as compared to the first film which I gave 10.Great but I have been spieled by the magic of the first film.
The Bourne Identity (2002)
Excellent
I was pleasantly surprised with the Bourne Identity.Very rarely do I get to watch a movie that surpasses my expectations.First of all can I say that there are so many films out there that have the same regurgitated ideas and plot lines. Not many of which have any originality.
This however is one of the exceptions thankfully and pleasantly.Centred around a man who gets washed ashore and with no memory.( OK so this has been done before !!) but this movie was original.A selection box of mystery, action and great acting by all concerned.Haven't seen much of Mr Damion I have to admit but he was impressive. The photography ( can I use that term without sounding like a theatre studies student ?) was very good.In fact watching this movie was like watching one of those middle of the night foreign movies in a funny sort of way. However this was much more.
In a word this film was ORIGINAL.Well directed and well acted. Good to see a film that doesn't have to rely on spectacular special effects and painted backdrops. This film worked because it worked without any of that.( Now I am waffling)
