La soga (2009)
10/10
Action, father and son story, evil bad guys
11 August 2010
La Soga is great. A believable, well-acted assassin (tough, but sensitive) who is beginning to doubt the motives behind his orders from the corrupt General, makes a great story, and unravels well with the revenge story about Luisito (La Soga)trying to find his father's murderer. It is beautifully shot in the DR and Washington Heights, has a very fitting score, wonderful acting by a Dominican cast. The revenge story, and love story, keep you watching. The action is excellent, and the view of gritty drug lords and corrupt government counterparts is the stuff movies are made of. The father and son story is touching, and echoed throughout. The visceral reminder of how human-human violence is akin to (but clearly not the same as) human-livestock 'violence' (ie. butcher references) was obvious, but poetic nonetheless. I loved it.

Sucker Punch (2003)
7/10
Ghetto action and a story of hopeless effort to escape
30 March 2006
This movie has a lot of terrible characters, the story is dark and the comedy even darker. The setting is urban ghetto NYC and the music is awesome. Really cool songs. The story is pretty disturbing...the main character is a very bad thug, but then is inspired to get out of his situation, which leads to a series of things happening to him. He is a great actor. And the Russian thug is a terrifying actor. The story makes you question what you can do about your situation in life. I liked it-didn't love it-but am amazed that this is an independent movie and not made by a studio, considering how intense and action-packed it is.

Ghetto Dawg 2 (2005)
10/10
Young lovers trying to get out of extremely bad circumstances surrounded by sinister characters. Main character walks fine line between destiny and choice.

The choices that people in a violent society have to face is the subject of this movie. The acting is great: Young talent in the main character and truly believable thugs. Packed with stunning and meaningful shots in what could be an uninspiring urban landscape. The story is unpredictable, because you're not sure how the main character is going to get out of his situation or if he will at all. I watched this movie on a tip from a friend who is into this genre (which I'm usually not) but I was not disappointed: it is refreshing and for what could seem like a low-budget movie, it looks great and is entertaining. Not for those sensitive to violence, but little of the violence is gratuitous or exploitative. It shows a rough world that we generally don't acknowledge.
