Relentless (2020)
Mislabeled
First off, this isn't a horror movie. It barely counts as a dramatic thriller. More of a drama with a few semi-tense moments thrown in. At one point I had to back out of the movie to make sure I was correct about the genre.
The protaganist spends far too much time doing unimportant things. The area shes confined in seems to have none of the things you would think would be in that type of space (like more or heavier objects). At one point I was convinced the power of memories would be the solution to her most pressing issue, because nothing else was happening.
Credit goes to Rachel Weber. Silent roles aren't the easies to pull off, and I feel she didn't have a ton to work with. I thought the cinematography was solid. Only good things that come to mind on this one. If the Hallmark Channel starts airing "horror" films, this would be a top recommendation. If you want to watch a movie with a great slow burn plot that goes somewhere, skip this and watch Blue Ruin.
Cause of my Death (2016)
Yet another one...
I love found footage horror movies as a (sub)genre, but I've seen this far too many times.Something goes wrong. Then we have "The' moment. The moment in most all found footage horror films. That moment where someone's back is turned, and they aren't answering anyone. Yeah they're evil now. They'll be a jump scare involving them shortly
Kind of a neat idea. I think an issue with found footage horror is that budget can hinder vision. Not the case with this one. It feels like whatever vision the writer had was realized after the middle of the second act. If you're a fan of found footage by numbers, give it a try. If you're looking for something original, this isn't it.
Truth or Dare (2013)
This movie was the exact opposite of what it intended to be
I love horror movies, even the crappy ones. At the very least it's fun to see how filmmakers with limited budgets find creative ways to present a story. Even when a horror movie is absolutely horrible, you can at least get a laugh or two. Truth or dare fails on just about every level.
This movie is supposed to shock with its graphic violence and gore. The problem is after a while, it just gets boring. The ante is supposed to be upped with every turn. Starting from a guy sleeping with underage girls, to the crescendo of abortion via scissors. By the third or fourth gory act, I was half watching and half playing games on my phone.
It's a sad day in filmmaking when blood and guts makes me yawn. I torture porn is your cup of tea, I suppose this one might be worth the time it takes to watch it. After an hour or so I was saying to myself "yeah ok. Stab this, shoot that, cut this. Next!". It becomes super dull and you're totally desensitized with 20 minutes left. I'd say if you're an average fan of horror, just skip it
Dissolved: A Game of Truth (2017)
I SO wanted to love this movie, but...
I've loved thriller movies since I was a kid. Cape Fear, Rasing Cain and Single White Female are three titles that instantly come to mind when I think of my favorites from back in the day. I found this on Amazon for free, so I thought I would give it a shot.
I read the plot description and was immediately intrested. When movies like this are excited perfectly, they drip with tension. Using a game as the method to drive the plot forward let's you break a few conventional rules. Knowing this, I was prepared for scorched earth truth and what would lead to inevitable escalation.
I was a bit disappointed. Most in the main character, Gian. I just don't buy him as "that guy". In a thriller your main character has to be charismatic, intense and driven. They have have a Svengali type quality. The twisted puppet master that secretly pulls the strings. Gian just kind of walked through this one. When he yells or has a mood shift, I don't get that tingle. When he mocks his victims, I don't feel that strange mix of fear and pity. It felt more like people in a room reading lines.
I really hope the director will give the genre another shot. This movie could have been epic if better executed. It's not the worst thriller I've seen. The characters feel one-dimensional and stiff, and Gian seems better suited for traditional drama, as opposed to a thriller. If you're in the mood for a good underrated thriller, check out Exam.
Rebirth (2016)
Wait....that's it?
That's what I said at this movies end. I have to say that a movie tying up it's plot in a credits scene is...yuck. So what is the message? Pyramid schemes are seen as a cult because of the all-encompassing nature? If that's the case you should have made this 30 years ago, when that was news.
Finding out the ending was so disappointing when the beginning had so much promise. I was excited wondering where it could go. Is he dreaming that he escaped but he's really in a chair being reprogrammed to be sent out in the world as a Rebirth minion? Does the order see the potential in Kyle to be a leader and bring in the sheep for some nefarious purpose? What is the nefarious purpose? Wow I cant wait to find out!
Its Herbalife...the movie. Here's a tip ladies and gents, don't waste your time. If you want to see how terrible pyramid schemes are, watch Betting On Zero. If you want to see a genuinely amusing satire of MLMs, watch the mockumentary Believe. There. It took you 30 to read this to know I just saved you 1 hour and 40 minutes of meh. Thank me later.
The Quarry: 2011 (2011)
Why?
Why? "Why what?" You might ask. Why any of this? Four friends decide to hang out at a quarry for fall beak. Ok, I get that. They decide to record the trip for memories. Ok, I get that also. Beyond that, the word I kept saying over and over was "Why?"
So friends are out in the wilderness drinking and goofing off. Have you had a friend that has gone on vacation, posted the video on YouTube, and sent you a link. Yeah, that is exactly what this film does for the first hour. There absolutely NOTHING going on of interest. You get a glimpse of the guy that eventually comes along to make things interesting later, that's it. Only one of them says yeah lets leave. Of course they dont.
So for the last 15 minutes of the movie, the Quarry Guy comes back. This time, the crew is a bit more apprehensive. What happens? Quarry Guy opens fire. The girl in the group is screaming her head off, and the guy that's filming hides in some nearby bushes. Quarry Guy says nothing as he kills them one by one and throws them into a lake, or river, or whatever body of water he's dumping them in. Finally after Quarry Guy is asked "What do you want!?" From one of his victims, he gives his answer."Baked potatoes". Yeah, thats it. Hes putting them in potato sacks, so he says baked potatoes. Looking for some insight on that? Yeah, me too.
Thankfully this was free with Amazon Prime, yet I still feel cheated out the time it took to watch this travesty. I adore found footage movies, even when they're a tad cheesy. This one shouldn't be watched. Want to see a so bad its good found footage flick with about half the runtime? Watch Gifts From Strangers.
