A Boy and His Dog (1975)
Don Johnson's tour de force
This flick kicks a whole lot of you know what. It's not a ten, but one Hell of a film. I think it falls a little short in the second act. The first act is intriguing and the setting is a lot to take in...second act begins to slow and starts reiterating the same things it's been saying in the first act. The third act is great, commenting on the social debacle that is our life. Don Johnson is a personal hero of mine because of this film. He's a nomadic man in a desolate world searching for pussy. It's a beautiful thing to see a man down to his last instinct. The dog is Don's only friend and the only reason Don has an advantage over everyone else on the planet...he can smell women up to a few miles away and he has a telepathic connection with Don. I connect on many levels with this film. It's a man's film...down and dirty, and full of humor.
Laserblast (1978)
This flick is good, but low budget
if you can get passed the low budget you'll have a good time. I saw this a long time ago, when I was seven, and loved it. Revisiting it now that I'm in my twenties, I can see it's faults, but still love it. Maybe it's the childhood memory, but it still strikes a cord. The aliens are a bit hoaky, but the core of the movie, following a man who's torn from his normal life and thrown into this rage of destruction....shot with the patented 16 millimeter look of the seventies is a not to be missed. It looks and feels like a classic low budget flick. The acting okay. The effects are crap. But the the good time this guy has destroying tall buildings and cars, it makes me want to head out into the desert to find my own laser cannon of destruction. I gave it a seven because it's a fun movie done very cheaply.
Night of the Dog (2005)
This is a great film
I saw this movie at the SMMASH film festival in Excelsior. I thought it had great dialog and was just about the most hilarious thing I've seen in a while. The acting was all good, all believable. The thing I liked most about the film was its range. It has four inner-cut stories that go from pee your pants funny to I'm crying in my cheerios. The film takes six friends through a crazy night dealing with their girlfriends. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone who hasn't seen this so I'm just going to say go and see it, you won't be disappointed. At the end of the screening they showed an alternate ending. It takes all of the characters an puts them on the set of making their own porno. They all have different jobs and I haver to say about that is "I am the long sheriff, this is the wet town."
