Mystic Thai-noir shoot 'em up with Jackal on a humanitarian mission
29 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
If you are looking for an adventure movie, think again if this specific film is the one you're looking for. The plot was very simple and uninteresting. I was hoping for a Michael Mann and realistically expecting a Hollywood made Hong Kong style macho film. However this one was neither stylistic nor sophisticated enough to be those. It could be satisfactory if you're missing the younger Seagal of twenty years ago or are a shoot 'em up style computer games player expecting similar qualities in films. Even on these points the script was lousy and unenterprising. Here comes Hounsou the sniper as he targets the bad guys at their large and very brightly lit house, they all keep standing at the many windows like sitting ducks and wait to be taken out one by one.

So Hounsou in total kills 50 guys and expertly beats up 100, then there is a dash of Thai mysticism as a twist and the at the end we are reminded that the film was a noble statement against sex trafficking. I think the only thing that remains from this film is that Hounsou made his claim as the potential star of bigger action movies. He was covering Russell Crowe and Leo Caprio in his previous major roles and now he proves that he is ready to go at it alone. As opposed to his appreciated and strong acting in former films, he was too bland, unengaged and nasty this time even for the standards of a mercenary, so we have no Jackal here either. I think these might be a problem for him in the future lest he ends up becoming another Dolph Lundgren.

I can't seem to find a thing I liked about this film apart from watching nice bits of Thai noir cityscape. Well on that count this one was superior to Bangkok Dangerous I think (nice cinematography plus we were spared Nick Cage and his wig here). I don't care a lot about accents so for me Kevin Bacon's low key presence was negligible. Can't really recommend this film.

Think about the casting while you watch
28 October 2011
We don't get to watch many thrillers lately so I was hopeful about this movie. It was actually satisfactory enough, the changing faces of the supporting cast was fun and sufficient to emphasize with Milla's character. If this was a bigger budget movie, it would be delightful to have some of these faces by more recognizable character actors depending on the situation and her disposition towards them. As it was, the film was more like a procession of many extras (note the collaboration of 4-5 studios). For some weird reason I expected and hoped she would at some point see Philip Seymour Hoffman as her husband, Luiz Guzman as the cop, Eric Roberts as Lanyon, but of course that didn't happen :) I agree with others that the love affair looked superficial and lacking chemistry, but just think (after watching the film) how it would be elevated by a clever and ambitious casting of supporting actors.

On the downside, the suspense level was not really high and the film never came close to being chilling. It could have been a much more captivating thriller. Sometimes the story of the killer was almost a sub-plot and it was her prognosis that was at the forefront, I guess Milla preferred it that way for having more opportunity to display her serious acting skills. My alternative would be to have more scenes with Lanyon and also more innovative stalking by the Lurker. That way the audience would engage better in making guesses about the killer's identity and could actually still be amazed by a clever twist at the end.

Here is a diversion about the leading actor (well, the movie became rather dull enough times to give me an opportunity to amuse myself by reflecting on her career). I think Milla is cleverly changing gear, she is very positively stuck in my mind with the Fifth Element (that was when Bruce Willis was a dashing action star) and I noted her acting in the Million Dollar Hotel as well as her portrayal of Jean Darc. When you come to think of it, she has a remarkably diverse and rich filmography with leading roles in major films while she was very young. Overall however, her last ten years went largely unnoticed by people who are not into resident evil, so now she has the chance to make a re-entry as a fresh face who happens to have a lot of acting experience. In the next few years she could aptly make her mark as the lead actress of noirs and thrillers (a role played by Kim Basinger and Michelle Pheiffer in the last decade).

To sum up, an entertaining and somewhat original movie which unfortunately is not intellectually challenging. Watch it, but with realistic expectations.

The Resident (2011)
not uncanny and no good: horrible editing and wasted setting
25 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I have a favorable opinion about Stanton especially after Watchmen, so I was expecting an economic but good thriller. There was the introduction and then a compact flashback explaining everything and there were still like 50-60 minutes to go so I thought they will probably give it a good twist. I was wrong, nothing happened! I think it was awful editing and whoever thought of putting the flashback to the beginning killed any promise of suspense. To be fair there is one explanation for placing the flashback near the beginning because if it was at the end it would have been really frustrating for people who waited 90 minutes for some minor climax.

Given the weak acting and casting (I counted a total of 5 real actors, 3 of them almost extras) one thing that could have saved this movie would be a focus on the building, and turning the apartment into a bizarre labyrinth like setting a la "Haunting". I had initially thought the movie was potentially a fresh take on the Sharon Stone/Tom Berenger thriller Sliver. the latter movie was emblematic of early 90's fascination with technological surveillance at a time when internet was in its infancy and security cams were not so cheap. So this time with the technology so much more advanced, the idea of a non-tech antagonist who totally relied on mechanics could have been interesting. With a sophisticated and well thought set, that could have made a somewhat fascinating film but no, the guy was happy digging holes in walls to peep and adding a few corridors behind some to go around, so that wasn't really very original either.

I don't see any value in this film and it was proper that it went straight to video. I will be careful about films that are BOTH produced and starred by Swank now! I clicked the spoiler warning but I don't think reading this would harm a viewer's watching at all!

Uninhabited (2010)
How about a more positive review -with massive SPOILERS!!!!!
15 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
It was actually not that bad compared to the average American light horror film. The bright and beautiful scenery is somewhat refreshing for this genre as opposed to secluded hotels and farmhouses. The acting was horrible and almost unprofessional but that in a way helped support sort of a realistic blair witch setting. Anyway what I actually want to say is, most of the reviewers here read a botched ghost story whereas I think it was plain that beth became obsessed with the myth of coral then became coral and killed her boyfriend. If they could have worked more on the first half of the film suggesting more strongly some of the tensions of her character, this film could have been really good, on a par with the French movie High Tension. As in High Tension, when you think about the first half here after watching the entire film you almost get some interesting clues. The Beth character had suggestions of some depth which were not sufficiently explored: surprisingly bossy ("stone fish, stay right where you are", nerdy ("please no studies here") and depressed ("you lightened up a bit"). Unfortunately it is only 'almost' high tension as these threads could have been much better developed. I suspect the script wanted to try such an idea (couple with an uneasy relationship as in Vacancy and Strangers + a twist at the end) but it was lost somewhere on the way. I am actually more interested in Australian horror films now and will try to watch new ones.
