The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
A good old-fashioned horror film.
There is not much that hasn't been done before when it comes to the horror genre, and this film certainly brings nothing new to it.
But as a fan of maritime stories and horror, this movie interested me greatly. The production values and direction are excellent, as are most performances. For the majority of the film I didn't get the sense that the Demeter was sailing on the sea as everything was so still and static and there were not a lot of creaks and moans from the ship.
The design of Dracula himself seemed to be based on his transition form between man and bat, with very little variation in his appearance. Despite his efforts to kill the entire crew and never reach his newly acquired real estate in London, he somehow makes it, although not entirely in human form for some reason.
But I enjoyed the film and want to see more like this.
Vikingulven (2022)
Not bad but could have been more.
The production values are very high and performances quite good, but the potential of this film was never fully realised.
Many things made no sense, especially the main character's immunity to lycanthropic disorder after being badly bitten at the end.
After keeping the first werewolf hidden from viewers at the start, the mystery and anticipation of what this beast would look like was very suddenly dissolved into the standard dark wolf that has been seen many times before. The CGI was also pretty standard and the beast's movements were weightless.
It was reasonably entertaining if you don't think about it too much.
The Night House (2020)
Worth watching - perhaps as a once only.
Although this film doesn't bring anything new to the genre, it has enough mystery to keep you watching. The main character is obnoxious and unlikeable so you don't necessarily feel for her despite what she is going through. The voice that speaks to her says too much too early, humanising itself, and it kind of ruined the spookiness a little for me.
