Men at Work (1990)
8/10
A 90s treasure found in the trash. Classic hijinks!
30 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Still enjoyable 30 years later! Good script and clean camera work. The reggae musical score fillers work well for the set location (Las Playas So Cal). The entire cast led by Sheen and Estevez are convincing with great chemistry and comedic timing. Leslie Hope is domineeringly sexy as Sheen's love interest girlfriend (Susan). Darrell Larson's dead man scenes of "iced" politician (Jack Burger) are humorously clever. Keith David's (Louis) command as an intimidating yet funny, intelligent and unexpectedly loyal "crazed combat veteran" is memorable. John Getz cartoon approach to his role as duplicitous doofus villain (Maxwell Potterdam III) works. You will laugh out loud at some of the best hijinks of the 90s including: rival garbage men duo setting booby traps, a pizza delivery man held hostage with a pellet gun, mafia hitmen nincompoops, and rival police being humiliated. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Crowe owns the role in this masterful period Navy film.
5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From the first scene we are taken aboard a period British Navy ship with all the trimmings and into an ocean going game of cat and mouse with the French (Acheron ship). The realism and detail(s) of the vessel(s) is spectacular and noteworthy. Crowe owns the role as Captain and is well served by several supporting cast members (crew) Bettany (doctor) and youthful mid shipmen who are mature beyond their years, competent and likable. The hard life of the sailor during the period is portrayed as well as the glory of battle. Set design and costuming are damn near flawless. The story unfolds with enough twists, turns and suspense to keep things interesting. Violin quartet scenes are tastefully memorable (spoiler). This is some of Crowes finest acting (that I am aware of). Excellent film that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Midway (2019)
7/10
Family friendly, educational, slightly over the top modern War movie.
29 June 2021
Midway is wholesome (not too much if any profanity, blood or guts), educational and entertaining. Pilot Dick Best is charismatic, awesomely brave and single handedly changes the course of history. Great to see Hollywood veterans D Quaid and W Harrelson in this film! Set design and costuming for the Japanese is well done. Special effects are digitized and over dramatized but impressive and necessary given the glory of Midway and related battles. Decent score. Borrows from "Memphis Belle" and its war period Americana style and tone. Midway proves a modern War film can be less dark and graphic and still get its point across.

Spiral (I) (2007)
6/10
Awkward, artfully shot, annoyingly scored, twisted
24 June 2021
Do you like art and jazz mixed with depression and anxiety, office politics and murder? If so you may like this film. Amber Tamblyn is adorable. What does she see in Mason anyway? Artfully shot. Too much Jazz playing throughout the film (annoying). Interesting twist at the end. I dug this out of my DVD collection.

Leviathan (1989)
6/10
Sucked but not a total loss
6 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The poor script causes an otherwise talented cast to become awkwardly miscast. The sexy female crew scientists have no place in an underwater expedition, but add a sexual tension that sorta works for straight male viewers. The sea monster mutation part human, part snake, part fish physical features are confusing, until the very end. Once revealed the monster disappoints when compared to legendary movie monsters (Godzilla, Alien, Predator, etc). Leviathan is not in the same league as comparisons to Abyss, Alien and theFly. But it rips enough off in terms of set design, effects, suspense, score and decent acting to make it interesting and entertaining.

Boomerang (1992)
8/10
A brilliant comedy as stylish and sexy as it is black.
19 October 2020
Boomerang is special because of the way it infuses quick witted black comedy with high fashion, career, sex, and friendship. The film is well cast and costumed. Murphy and Givens sexual chemistry is palpable. Murphy's supporting entourage (Lawrence and Greer) are hilarious and ground the film in the sort of brotherly love. The late John Witherspoon cameo is memorable.

Exhilarating as it is heartbreaking
24 June 2017
A thrilling ride. This is a must see for any motor sport racing enthusiast. An intricately woven story which follows the storied racing careers of MotoGP Euro Italian legends Valentino Rossi and Marco Simoncelli, and their rival Spaniards. Intricately shot, the slow motion footage (ala Ron Howard's Rush 2013) of the quickest, most advanced motorbikes on the planet taking corners on legendary circuits throughout Europe puts you right in the saddle. Brad Pitt's narration, soothing and paternal adds the sort of star power and prestige this Euro racing docudrama deserves. 58, your legend lives!
