LOL - Hasse Toh Phasse (2021)
Whoever approved it should be fired
I can't describe how pathetic this concept was and the first episode which could be the deciding factor in whether audience sees the full season or not, is so bland and dull, that I couldn't even laugh for once. It should have been so easy for the contestants too. Audience would be an easy winner of the show. And obviously, got so much miffed that decided not to waste any more time on subsequent episodes. Avoid!
Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021)
Little letdown by the climax.. An awesome movie, otherwise.
Very surprised that there wasn't enough buzz about the movie. Probably to do with the fact that it got an almost a year delayed release due to covid. And I chanced upon it while scrolling through prime video. Name of Dibakar bannerjee, sure why not! And I wasn't disappointed. Great direction. Arjun Kapoor shines(surprise, surprise) , so does Parineeti and all others. Very well paced and engaging. Iwas however disappointed a bit by the climax, probably something better could have been arrived at. Secondly, Parineeti's problems with his boss could have been made more clearer. Particularly liked the attention to details, which an Uttarakhandi would agree. Highly recommended.
Greenland (2020)
I thought movie is about disaster. Didn't know it was a disaster itself
A new movie on prime-that should have been a warning but I thought well maybe they improved on selection. Oh well!
So, movie is about a guy and his family selected by the Govt to be transported to safe bunkers because a comet is threatening to wipe out existence. They start to airbase, but oh, kid's insulin is lost! Father rushes to search but oh, wife & kid are lost. Wife & kid take a lift and oh, the child is lost. Wife is deserted on highway and somehow manages to find kid back. Man finally meets them at her parents' as per the note she left him.so basically the movie has reset itself back to beginning. Now they start for Canada as the guy heard planes are available to fly them out. We'll, OK. I don't know how that works so they start and manage to reach the airbase but oh no, the plane is leaving so let's get on to runway and stop the plane by blocking it. And, they make it. End. Well, and you do have the troubled relationship which is going on the path of separation and the crisis makes them come back. together, for your emotional pleasure. In a nutshell- the movie generates zero intensity, zero rush, has absolutely flawed logic and pathetic direction. My review can't do justice to the magnificent stupidity of this. So, watch it to feel it yourself!
Chhalaang (2020)
Letdown by Script
Positives first. Acting is great by all key actors though some are definitely underutilized like Saurab Shukla and Rajeev Gupta. The movie is also light-hearted and a family movie. In fact, you can combine your regular chores with watching the movie and not worry about having missed anything.
Now, the 5 stars are because I rate it 6 for first half and 4 for second. The first part attempts to add some humour, but it doesn't really make you laugh. It's completely passable. It's not too bad though. The film completely falters in the 2nd half due to an unnecessary angle of this competition between the two PTI teachers. This was completely illogical and you shake your head in disbelief. Well but we have all seen such Bollywood sagas, haven't we? So we can go past that. Then since it's going to be a game, you'd want to root for a team, in this case obviously Rao's team. But you don't feel sympathetic towards it and then their methods to train and persuade parents don't cut any ice. The movie is a complete letdown and better to avoid. Camerawork and acting is good. You can give it a pass or treat it as a time pass.
Laxmii (2020)
Shoddy Camera work. Pathetic Direction
This movie looked good only in trailers. Period. You recognize what a piece of garbage this is as soon as the movie starts. Camera work looks similar to that of a cheap south indian movie. Cinematography is dull. First half of the film generate zero laughs, zero horror, zero interest. Second half had probably 2-3 minutes of funny moments in total. They also try to show what bad stuff happened to Laxmii but doesn't ge erate any sympathy/emotions. Kiara Advani-I am not sure why she was even there. The 2-3 minutes of fun was only due to Ashwini. Movie is completely avoidable. Then there is usual good Muslim drama but wouldn't go into that. All in all, completely avoidable
Special OPS (2020)
Immature direction and flawed execution
I saw some highly rated reviews on this. Even on IMDB, people have rated as 8.5 , which isn't bad but it was a hopeless from the start. I thought maybe it will improve from episode 2 or 3 as the story builds up but after a certain point, I wasn't interested (forget emotionally invested) in any of the characters, nor was I eager to know what happena next. Because when you have such an immature concept, direction, screenplay and what not. It's funny that its created by Neeraj pandey, who directed some promising thrillers(though I find his work all the same with no novelty). The only saving grace is Kay Kay who pulls an impeccable performance as always. But I couldn't feel much for his character e, well because of what I said earlier. And all the other characters, Well-they took some reasonable cast but what a big letdown. Kay Kay's family never really integrated in the story. It would have been much better if they had just made him single because they add negaatively to the show. The financial audit committee setting is plain stupid to say the least, when they could have easily thought of a simple one instead. The most frustrating of all, are the agents, who spend money like crazy instead of maintaining a low profile and well, are extremely incompetent and do well only in staged testing situations. In real situations, they are plain dumb and clueless. Avoid at all costs even if you want to watch it for Kay Kay or Neeraj Pandey.
Triangle (2009)
Mind blowing!
Was just browsing through prime video and chanced upon this as I wanted to watch a good horror/thriller. This isn't horror to be clear but the movie gets you completely invested in itself since the beginning. Very well scripted, intelligent and coherent plot. Loved it for the intelligence. Main point is things keep getting unfurled until the very end and you are consistently at the edge. Must watch. Highly recommended! Also noticed that the film didn't do well at the box office and i cured losses, which is very sad if true.
Panchayat (2020)
Disappointing
Wondering how did it get the 9 rating. Over the period, expect it to come down to 6 or 7. The show is disappointing, especially as it comes from TVF. Most of the scenes should have been cut or edited. It gets painfully slow and boring. Survived the first episode somehow in the hope it might turn out better subsequently. Finally gave up in the middle of 2nd episode and decided not to waste any more time. Perhaps should be edited a bit-that would improve it a bit but not sure it would change anything so much that you would be happy to put in your precious hours.
Lymelife (2008)
Brilliant!
I just chanced upon this movie. And it is brilliantly made. Great direction, character development, performances dialogues. The movie kept me glued throughout. And I am generally take pride in my taste of movies. Wonder why it's rated a sub 7. Highly recommended!
Midsommar (2019)
Not a movie. Just an Art. Absolutely weird
Dont even think about trying to reason with it. It's just a piece of art, with good visuals and camera. There is just no script. There is no entertainment. Best to avoid. Looks like the director or scriptwriter was high all the time. Movie is utterly slow, boring and to make it worse, long. Do yourself a favor and don't waste those hours of life just because you don't have anything to do.
Fargo (2014)
Would rate it after breaking bad.
Before I go into details, I haven't really watched many of TV series except Breaking Bad, Mad Men, some seasons of House of Cards, and Sherlock. Of my limited viewing, I'd rate it just below breaking bad. It's binge worthy, great direction and plot. Season 1 seemed slightly off though but definitely not bad per se. It just didn't seem too exciting, but you would still be eager to know what happens next. Season 2 is what I liked the most, with awesome performances all around and It always made me excited to unfurl the next episode. Season 3 starts pretty slow and for first few episodes, it seems lacklustre but hold your patience, and it just blasts off in the subsequent episodes. Highly recommended!
Breathe (2018)
Led by Madhawan and Joshi, disappointed by every other
Well, if this works, it's only because of Madhavan who excels in his character and also by the assistant inspector Joshi who plays his part well. Most of other characters are frivolous. Especially annoying is Amit Sadh who keeps the same look in all the episodes so much that instead of empathizing with him for his daughter's loss, you end up disliking whenever he comes up on screen. Story and logic also seems flawed at places. There is also an issue with the direction and editing where some scenes are overly stretched and too many flashbacks inserted when not required. First 2 episodes are pretty slow. 3rd is where the action starts. Watch it for Madhavan who excels in an otherwise slightly immature direction and editing.
Damaged (2018)
Great acting, direction and screenplay but few pieces of missing logic
I happened to watch this as it was available on Vodafone play and I think it's a really well made but underrated series. Also one which many haven't seen or even heard of. First of all, performances are brilliant except maybe a few but most of the major characters are excellent. Direction seems to be great as well as the camerawork. Probably the only thing which doesn't work in its favour is the fact that there is a very clear absence of logic in the case investigation. Nobody even goes through basic call records and cell location checks. So many people are killed and there are no eye witnesses who saw the deceased with the perpetrator. This is as naive as it can get, esp when the police/CBI is actually keen to crack the case. If they were uninterested, it could have still made sense. Clearly this suffers from a flawed writing. However if you are willing to ignore the flawed investigation logic, it's a definitely good watch and does keep you engrossed. I rate it 7.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Do not fall for the rating!
I was looking to watch some nice comedy flick over the weekend. Did some research and finalized on this one. IMDB rating-check. User reviews-check (and why didn't I filter on low ratings! ).
Anyways, so the movie is about sort of a loser, professionally and romantically, who is dumped by his girlfriend. People in the office don't take him very highly. He got flatmates, one who doesn't work and plays games, and there is another one who is serious about life. Our guy is obviously close to the gamer guy. After heartbreak, our guy and the doper-gamer drink the entire night only to wake up next day hungover to find out people are turning to zombies and they need to save themselves before any zombie bites them. So they kill a few zombies wandering around their house and get their mate's car to save his mother and stepdad. And then, his girlfriend and her mates. They head off to their favorite bar thinking it would be safe place but as expected isn't so and they are surrounded by zombies all around. The loser becomes the leader. Movie is very light hearted but it is like usual crass comedies out there, which have few scenes that may make you smirk but none of them actually making you lol and most of them making you meh. There is no proper character development, nothing convincing enough as to why the girlfriend dumps him and why he hates the stepdad and few other tits and bits. Movie is bland and absolutely flat. Or may be i never liked the British humour.
Manmarziyaan (2018)
Portrayal of real life emotions
This is easily one of the best movies of 2018. Anurag kashyap ventured into a different territory with this movie and the result was quite good. I found the movie missing some of the typical shades of kashyap's direction except for music and some bits here and there. However, this Hum dil de chuke sanam inspired movie may not be for masses. the former was a grand affair of bhansali with clear headedness of every actor. This movie however invests heavily into emotions, psychological drama playing out in the head and whether the decisions are based on impulsiveness or are they well thought out. Remember, life is not easy and more so for an Indian with enough emphasis on society, parents, relatives and your heart. As a result, decisions are taken abruptly as it naturally happens with any of us. What could have been an issue with this movie not ringing up the cash registers is people might have perceived the movie as confusing. Except, it is not. The movie beautifully portrays the complex myriads of emotions, and logic and this is what happens in reality as well. Thumbs up to kashyap for this psychological love drama that is also powerfully driven by its actors and yes, trivedi's music.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018)
Okayish.. Great songs. Dull Plot! Average Acting
Luv Ranjan often makes movies targeted at youngsters who want to fall in love, are in 1st love and girlfriend-boyfriend issues and hypocrisies associated.. He does a good job at highlighting those issues as was done in his (successful?) Pyaar Ka Punchnama series. To be fair, SKTKS is much better than PKP. It's a mature acting, pumping songs, and a better setup overall. Where it falls short is its comic delivery. It tries to get onto the usual Delhi-style comedies with Delhi lingo and characters. There are great movies which characterise Delhi- Oye Lucky, Khosla Ka Ghosla. To me, these are cult movies which define how a comic script should be. SKTKS tries to mimic these but finds itself transiting between the earlier series of PKP and Khosla Ka Ghosla types.
The plot is strictly average where the movie boils down to who gets the better of the other one: Sony or Sweety. I hwould have preferred a much more believable and some coherence in the sequence of events.
Songs are great, acting is okay and overall it's the better one out of all Luv Ranjan's earlier movies.
The movie probably would be liked by 18-30 age group.
PS: Btw, I'm surprized that PKP 1, 2 are rated quite highly
