Dark (2017)
Best show of all time
If you need the single biggest proof that Imdb ratings are biased, this is it. This show must be rated as the highest ever rated show, there is no other possibility. It starts as a suspence drama, turns out to be a time travel saga and takes you into a soul searching inter dimension (world) journey. The writing is amazing, every single scene is meticulously crafted. Screenplay is a piece of art, you can savor every scene. Whenever one episode ends, you can't wait but turn over to next one. Worst thing is to wait for one year after a season ends. Thankfully I watched the series when all three seasons were out. It was a soul satisfy experience to binge watch all three seasons. I don't want to say any more about the story or the plot. Start watching it on a Friday evening and you will relish that weekend of your life as a never forgotten episode.
Azhar (2016)
Nice propaganda movie:
Nice propaganda movie
Nice and clever propaganda. The movie beautifully covers up the issue whether Azhar took money or not, they raised it just before the interval and conveniently covered it under many other aspects of his life. He has played for India and won many matches for the country so of course there will be many things to cherish and celebrate about him, which makes the movie interesting, no doubt. But the whole plot about the match fixing angle is so cooked up, they show him taking money from bookie, talking to the bookie on cellphone during the match and suddenly his conscience awakens up in the middle of the match. How convenient !! And look at the crookedness of the makers, before the start they announce that this is a work of fiction and at the end, Azhar's character tells us I leave it to you, whether you want me to believe or not. Yeah, we are stupid enough to believe, that you took the money but suddenly in the middle of the match, your grandfather's soul made you do the right thing.
The whole court case which tries to exonerate him in the movie, was in reality, about the ban on him by the cricket association and and not the actual match fixing, many cine-goers will not be able to realize this difference. This case was dragged for many years and was a low profile one, contrary to what is shown in the movie. Moreover, he is shown as a loving husband and family-man, who protects both his wives and families by not letting them come to court. So much so for a guy who even after marrying twice, had affair with Jwala Gutta and then had another affair with Shannon Marie. Someone has correctly said that some people want to change the definition of our heroes. Thank you Ekta Kapoor, till now you were making garbage movies, now you are making movies on garbage people. I wonder why Emraan accepted this role, probably because it was a tough role, tough to portray a wrong man as right and he must be given credit for his performance, he actually acted good, same goes for Prachi. Nargis and Kunal Roy Kapoor made caricatures of their characters as usual. However biggest achievement goes to the script writers for camouflaging this dishonorable man as a true sportsperson and patriot cricketer.
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014)
DDLJ of 2014
First of all, a note to the haters, who are thrashing the movie by saying it is not fit to be a homage of DDLJ, get a life. Any movie aspiring to be a DDLJ does not have be as good as the former. HSKD is too good to be true for a movie with DDLJ hangover. I am not going to judge this movie on the basis of how closely it pays homage to DDLJ. I will rate the movie on its own merit and it definitely deserves 3- 3.5 out of 5.First of all, full marks to Aalia and Varun for portraying their characters so effortlessly. Some people are complaining about Aalia's character whether any small town girl would behave like Aalia behaves in this movie. Two things, anything in the vicinity of NCR is not a village or small town, period. Plus, she is shown as a darling of the family and spoiled and at the same time vulnerable and I don't think Aalia could have done any better. She is Kareena Kapoor of this generation. Varun plays typical good for nothing middle class Delhi guy and he does equally good. Siddharth Shukla was supposed to look like a hunk when compared to Varun and he did an OK job. Thankfully he didn't really need to perform much, so he somehow balanced his act. Screenplay lacks detailing, I know today girls and guys could be close friends and can even share dirty jokes, but I guess a scene where Aalia watches porn (string operation) with the guys was too much, may be in 2025 but not right now. It reminds me of a scene in Rock-star where Ranbir and Nargis watch a c-grade movie in theater and can't stop giggling. I don't know where our writers get these kind of ideas, they do not happen even in most urban society. Also screenplay is full of clichés, but good acting saves the day. Direction by Shashank Khaitan is good, one big mistake he did is he and the marketing team promoted this movie as a tribute to DDLJ. If they had promoted this as another regular love story, box office collection and appreciation could have been much much better. Good luck to Varun for acting with his idols in Dilwale, hope that will rock.
Munna Mange Memsaab (2014)
movies made by drunkards for drunkards:
What the hell, I can't even imagine there are people in this world who can produce such a movie. Onkardas Manikpuri created a small name for himself after "Peepli Live", but he chose to play a creepy stalker in this movie, literally. The story goes like this, Manikpuri plays Munna, who when teased by other children for being a ugly kid, his mother played by Himani Shivpuri tells him that he is "very beautiful" and one day, he will marry a "memsaab". Cut to few years later, Munna has now grown up to be an ugly man from an ugly kid. He now goes Mumbai and whenever he see a young fair colored girl, he literally goes out to her and proposes , "Memsaab, My mother says I am very beautiful, please marry me". First half of the film goes in Munna getting beaten by slippers and boyfriends. However things change, when Munna becomes a rickshaw dweller and finds a foreigner, played by gorgeous Jordiya Anna, who takes pity to the helpless creep. Then out of nowhere, an actress is killed and Munna is framed for her murder, followed by courtroom drama, fought by Ajit Junior (Bhalla of Andaz Apna Apna fame) and Raja Murad.
I think, I am probably the only one who dared to complete the movie. It is a torture, a disgrace even for a B-Grade movie. The director probably made this movie for casting couch, enjoyed with actresses in night and then shooting filth in the day time. The editor probably was too drunk to watch complete movie, forget editing it. Imagine, the murdered actress's mother (named Chawanni Bai) speaks in American accent and foreign actress Jordiya enjoys "bhaang" and dances in towel with Munna. I can't understand how someone can spend 10 crore (minimum budget, I think)on this crap. I don't think, people are so drunk or illiterate to watch this in theater. If you watch this movie, please review and let others know, what 100% crap this shitty movie is.
Khuddar (1994)
Govinda shows his brilliance!!
For those who label "Govinda" as a comic actor, they need to see this movie!! When this movie was written, the writer must have thought of "Ajay Devgan" or "Sunil Shetty" as the protagonist, as they were doing many such films at that time. "Govinda" changed his usual style and delivers a high octane performance. His eyes did the talking in emotional scenes. I couldn't believe he could be so brooding. He showed flashes of this during the second half of "Shola aur Shabnam", but that movie had some comedy too. Here it is just the high octane, emotionally charged "Govinda" mouthing dialogues like "Amitabh" used to mouth in 70s. Comedy was left to Kader Khan in a small role. The villains in this movie were lecherous and heinous, be it "Shakti Kapoor", "Raami Reddy" and everybody else, especially "Shakti Kapoor", who delivered a knocked out performance. "Karishma Kapoor" was the best, when it comes to Govinda's pair. Their chemistry was impeccable. Music was very melodious and was in sync with 90s tradition."woh aankh hi kya", "tum sa koi pyara" and "tum maano ya na maano" all were soothing to the ears. "Sexy , sexy , sexy" was different but it proved its importance, as it created enough controversy needed to help the movie on box office. There were many scenes that were not suitable for young audience. Dialogues were the highlight of the movie, with most of them being adrenaline pumping, especially the one "Govinda" tells "Shakti Kapoor" in the climax. This movie was an example of his unlimited talent and I would say every person who thinks of him as a comedian must watch this movie. It is sad, he didn't do many such movies, but it is same as saying why "Shahrukh" didn't so may movies like "Darr" and "Anjaam".
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012)
Height of cinematic brilliance
Anurag Kashyap has done it once again. For those, who thought "DevD" was worthy of the TOI rating of 5/5. GOW deserves a rating of 100/100. A movie can't be bigger than this, bigger not in terms of budget, but in terms of ambitions. I was completely blown away by this epic saga and have ran out of vocabulary when it comes to praise this movie.
The story starts with a bang. Indian villages of British era were never so authentic since the last time they were shown in Gandhi(1982). Shahid Khan (Jaideep Ahlawat) sets the pace of a gory battle that will eventually be continued till the next 60 years. Ramadhir Singh(Tigmanshu Dhulia) gets every nuances rights of his character of a Bhumihar landlord. There is not much story, to be honest, but it's the screenplay that overpowers everything, it gives us characters that will etched in one's memory days after leaving the theater. The sets, locations, dialect, accent literally takes you to Bihar. Whether it's 1941's Bengal or 2004's Jharkhand, the essence of the movie remains hardcore Bihari. However, this isn't completely a grim movie about the then prevalent anarchy in the state. The movie also showers us with some colorful characteristic of the state, such as, Mithun worshiping or the innocent love affairs(Danish's love at first sight and Faisal's interactions with Mohsina). The way they looked into each other's eyes with "salaam- e-ishq" playing in background to the way entire scene at the pond when he touches her hand are a delight to watch. Nawazuddin Siddiqui shines in his short role though it is evident he is going to be at center-stage in part II. There are numerous sequences that will remains etched in your memory for a long time, especially most of the scenes with Richa Chadhha(playing Bajpai's wife).Reema Sen showed village sensuality in a way never seen before.
The music of this movie is strange, as it not exactly a bollywood music, which allows people to go to bathroom or to go for a smoke. Here each song is an integral part of the movie. All songs are short and takes the story forward. However the best part of the music was the use of old songs in the narrative, e.g., "Kasam paida karne wale ki" title song. You have to watch it to believe it the way it was shown in the film.
There is no point writing the story here as this is not a story driven movie, This is a character driven movie and characters with powerful actors. Kahsyap has calculative selected his cast as every actor has given a marvelous performance. However I felt bad for Yashpal Sharma, he should have been given a proper character and now let's talk about the Amitabh of this Trishul, even though Waheeeda, Sanjeev, Shashi and Hema played such beautiful characters, the film would have been nothing sans Bachchan. Same goes for Amitabh of this movie, Manoj Bajpai. I have no adjectives to describe his performance. His role was the strongest and he didn't let his director down but then, he always have been a terrific actor, it's the directors who fail to give him a strong role. I still remember his "maa'm, maa'm" from "Kaun", which I think one of his most underrated performances. The way he has been shown in the climax will give goosebumps to every person sitting in the theater, the song "Jiya ho bihar ke lala" comes at this juncture and it is one of the finest climaxes ever in the history of Indian cinema. Overall, GOW is a movie so damn brilliant, it needs to be seen in order to be believed.
Aashiqui (1990)
The legends called Nadeem-Shravan
For a six year old child it is very difficult to remember about movies and songs. However there are movies, their music and there was Aashiqui. It was not just another movie with hit music. It was a phenomenon. The sale of music players was increased dramatically in those days. Practically every home in India had a audio cassette(today's CD/DVD wielding kids would probably never know of them!!) of Aashiqui in their home. It is not very common to come across albums with almost all the songs being awesome. However in this case, the word "almost" can be easily dropped. Each and every song of this movie is timeless. Nadeem-Shravan may not be creative and experimental like A. R. Rehman, but it is true that if "melody" had a second name it would be Nadeem-Shravan. "Aashiqui", "Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin","Sadak", "Saajan", "Deewana", "Dil Ka Kya Qusoor", "Salami", "Damini", "Dil Wale", "Raja Hindustani", "Jeet", "Pardes" are examples of this genius combination. Mahesh Bhatt is one of the finest filmmakers we had, but it is sad that his biggest commercial success is probably his weakest work as a director, or probably got overshadowed by the lovable music. The acting in this movie is anything but good. Rahul Roy caught the fancy of many young girls in those days and his hair style was an instant rage, however the guy just couldn't act and sadly it was clearly visible in the movie too. Recently in a TV show, Kareena Kapoor admitted, she has a poster of Salman in her room, which she replaced with Rahul's when Aqshiqui released. However anybody who had seen this movie can easily predict that Rahul lacked the charisma to be a major star. Anu Agarwal showed the signs of things to come. Apart from acting in B-Grade Hollywood soft porn, the girl couldn't achieve anything. It is common for an actor to pull off a movie single handedly despite of shoddy script and bad music. In some cases even some directors have pulled off a movie by tight narration despite unconvincing performance. Aqshiqui is one of the rare cases, where Music alone pulled off a movie.
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)
One of the best of Govinda's
This movie came at a time when every big heroine wanted to act opposite either to the Khans or Govinda. Govinda was at the top of his game in those days. Even his flop movies used to do more business than average movies. Especially David Dhawan and Govinda combination was like Shahrukh-K Jo combination.Amitabh was trying his hand at his comeback. He desperately needed a hit at that time. This movie and "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" were released on the same day. Though KKHH went on to become a blockbuster, this movie was nonetheless entertaining.Raveena was probably the only actress after Karishma who could match up to Govinda's standards. Even though she was nothing when compared to Karishma who shared an incomparable chemistry with Govinda, she was only other possible alternative. This was the second last time Amitabh had a heroine opposite him(the last being "Suryavansham"). Though he looked old, but curvaceous and wholesome Ramya Krishnan was not a wrong choice to be casted opposite him.Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik provided full entertainment in supporting roles. Songs were typical Govinda style with "Kisi Disco Mein Jaayein" and "Makhna" being the top chart-busters of that time. Bollywood was so much of fun in those days. If one makes these kind of movies today, it won't run for even a week, but it certainly entertained people in those days. One of the things to be noted was Govinda towering over Amitabh. It was evident that Govinda was in charge here and not the Bachchan.
Karan Arjun (1995)
One of the best of 90s
I still remember the first time I watched this movie back in 1995. I was almost hypnotized during the movie. Dialogues like "Mamta Ka Karz" and "Inteqam Ki Aag" may sound cheesy in today's time, but these were pretty common those days and who better than Shahrukh and Salman to mouth those lines. Salman did his tough guy role with élan. Shahrukh though physically unsuitable to play that kind of role didn't do bad either. Kajol may be remembered as an actress of substance today but this movie showed her and Mamta Kulkarni, both as mere showpieces, a trait of 90s. Amrish Puri did another of those evil Thakur kind of roles, that he could even played in his sleep. However the soul of the movie is Rakhi Gulzar, every time she mouthed that unforgettable "Mere Bete Aayenge, Mere Karan Arjun Aayenge" line, I used to find myself almost in tears. Music was average, but "Jaati Hun Main, Jaldi Hai Kya" became a chart-buster and was like Kajol's own "Dhak Dhak".Not to forget "Mujhko Ranaji Maaf Karna", which was one of the most talked about songs after "Choli Ke Peeche". Bravura performances, hit songs, high emotional melodrama and above all Rakhi's spirited performance made this movie a cult. Not to miss if you have been bored of NRI characters roaming in Mercedes and dancing in exotic locales and want to see some real Bollywood extravaganza.
Simha (2010)
Ballaya is the real Simha
When I first heard that SIMHA is creating new box office records, I thought about giving it a chance. I am a north Indian and haven't watched any of Ballaya's movie. Though I have watched more than 50 Telugu movies till now, a Ballaya movie has still eluded me. After watching the teasers of SIMHA on you tube, I finally booked tickets for it. When the movie started, it felt like a usual feast, especially because of Namitha mainly. Though Ballaya looked a little old for Sriman Narayana's role, but he seemed serious. The first half was overall average, the usual fights sequences, villains making grueling faces, heroins drooling over Ballaya and all. However post intermission movie turned out to be much better. The Narasimha role suited Ballaya very well. He looked every bit of that fiery tiger. Nayanthara looked royal and elegant. Sneha Ullal seemed lost, while Namitha looked ugly, she is too fat even for being a porn star now.
Chirutha (2007)
The next Megastar was born before "Magadheera"
When I first saw "Magadheera", like most of the North Indians, I was like, "Oh My God!!", who is this guy? I took some time off to read about the Son of the Mega Star Chiranjeevi, and came to know about "Chirutha". Obviously my curiosity led me to watch it. Having watched "Pokkiri" in college time, I too had expectations from Puri Jagannath. Though like every one else, I too found his direction completely out of place. It seems that he was confused whether to make a show-reel of Charan's capabilities or a complete and taut movie. Though he went with the first option, but was I disappointed, hell No!! Charan showed that the blood of Megastar is here to stay.Considering the fact that this was his first movie, he was just awesome. I also came to know about the gigantic expectations among which this movie was released. I don't think Charan let down his father, or his father' s fans, or shall I say, "his fans". He danced like a dream, fought like a tiger and carried the screen presence of a Star. It was quite obvious, that he pulled a lifeless story on his shoulders alone. Only aid, was the music by Mani Sharma, which aptly suited for a movie of this scale. Thus after watching "Chirutha", I knew why Charan was so awesome in Magadheera. He has everything that a Star needs, all he needs is a good script, and then Chirutha will roar like anything. My heart goes out to this 24 years old volcano of Stardom. The next Megastar, my best wishes are with you.
Sher-E-Hindustan (1998)
Another trailblazer from Mithun, but only his fans
First things first, It's a Mithunda starring movie. So, don't expect any masterpiece. You get get your dose of entertainment, in Mithunda style. There will be a buxom heroine. There will be couple of goons, Gulshan Grover in this case, and his four sons. Mithun is an honest police officer. He is pitted against these ferocious villains to protect an entire village. When he gets tough, the villains beat him up forcibly put a nose ring on his nose. Mithun carries it through out the movie until he puts in villain's nose at the end just before killing him. As always entire movie is shot in ooty. The heroine has some cheap erotic dance moves with Mithun. Also, there is an item number by Madhu, which boasts of lyrics like, "Daaku ho gaye Daakiya babu", grrrrrrrrr. Plenty of low budget fight scenes and idiotic dialogues. In nutshell, another Mithun flick, nothing great about this one.
Anwar (2007)
Hauntingly Beautiful
There is only one word in this world that can aptly describe this movie, "Beautiful". It blends contemporary social issues with an artistic flavor that is rarely seen in Indian cinema. The cinematography is amazing. The film tries to explain the metaphor of love. Love in various forms, which ranges from platonic love to lust. The social issues dealt here however lack maturity but when dealing with metamorphical things, that's where the film comes into its own. Just watch the scenes where Anwar symbolizes Mehru with Meera and himself with Krishna, beautiful, just beautiful. Acting is quite fine by everyone, especially Pankaj Jha who played the minister's right hand. However the real scene stealer is VIJAY RAZ who makes you to sit and look in awe as he performs like anything. Even regular theatre actors would find it hard to swallow when the guy comes into his own. The last scene where he shouts from the rooftop, "Bhikhari nahi hoon main, kalakaar hoon kalakaar", is fantastic. This film should be shown to all wannabe directors. Over all a must watch for every Cinema lover.
Ladies Tailor (2006)
Sleazy flick with B-Grade humor
Rajpal Yadav has done some good solo movies like "Main Meri Patni aur Woh" and "Undertrial". Here he tries to play a character similar to what Govinda used to play in his "No. 1" days. Added with some regular character actors, Rajpal this time plays the mainstream hero.Supporting him are Razzaq Khan, Manoj Pahwa and the thinnest person on this earth(don't know his name). The villains are being played by Mukesh Rishi and Shahbaaz Khan. I don't know what was the reason to use the two 6.2 something guys against Rajpal Yadav, maybe to create some comedy. Anyway as the story goes, Rajpal is lazy tailor waiting to get his fortune. There is a pundit who advices him to find a girl with a mole on her thighs. Sounds corny!! That's ladies tailor for u, Downgrade and cheap humor. He even manages too kiss Kim Sharma (well not in Hashmi style though). May be this was the reason he prompted to do this film. Overall not that bad, if you watch it with a group of friends on a weekend.
Dilwale (1994)
Average Music with Timeless Music
When this movie originally came in 92, even as a child I remember its songs being played at every corner, such was the success of the music. Even the songs in the audio cassettes included prologues in form of small conversations. The movie was just another love story. The acting too was plain average except for Preash Rawal's Mama Thakur character. Watch him playing a bad guy to the hilt before joined the buffoonery bandwagon. Raveena Tandon was really one of the hottest girls of that time. Just watch her dancing in the songs. I bet running around trees could not have been much merrier. And yeah, if you don't believe that Sunil Shetty can't look good(forgive me, tolerable) watch him in this one, he definitely was not bad-looking(could not use good looking for obvious reasons). Overall, a watchable flick.
Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003)
Genelia rocks
Ritesh Deshmukh was not a star with his first movie. In fact he was relegated to back seat while Genelia Desouza showed a sparkling performance. The story is told countless times. Yet it made the impact because of the taut screenplay. The comedy scenes in the first half are really funny. The second half is more like a Karan Johar movie. In nutshell it can be seen for Genelia who is gorgeous enough to make me watch the movie. Also one can see and learn that how Ritesh transformed himself from the shy guy in this movie to the stud of "KKHH" and "ASMM". The music by Viju Shah is also fabulous and title track is no less than magical.Overall it's a nice teen movie with light hearted comedy.Go, watch it if you haven't till now.
Jaan-E-Mann: Let's Fall in Love... Again (2006)
a beautiful extravaganza
Those of you who have been grown up on bollywood stuffs are bound to dislike this movie, but for others all is not the same. If you like Broadway musicals that's an added advantage, cause then you won't fell weird as some of my fellow viewers were feeling. Jaan-e-man is a movie made straight from the heart. Imagine a director wearing additional caps such as screenplay, editing, dialogues, background score, one hell of an involvement, huh!
I don't want to talk about the story as it is clear from the promos,it is a two guys in love with the same woman. It is in the execution the beauty of this movie lies. Also the performances are terrific. The film requires stars, not actors to carry these roles and the director couldn't have get much better. If you ever loved someone in your life, and you like to see movies, this is the movie for you. This diwali clearly belongs to Jaan-e-man. Small centers may go gaga over the glossy DON but this is a movie which would remain in hearts of people.
The blemishes, Anupam Kher despite of his funny get-up he is just not funny. The sparkle, Salman, he is the superstar, the most handsome hero bollywood has ever produced.
Aathi (2006)
nice action
another superstar movie with no storyline or whatever. but who cares till the theaters are full to see 5 well-filmed songs and super charged fights. another vijay movie only for his fans!!! aathi comes to chennai from delhi to study. he meets trisha and fall in love with her. but both have a single mission . to avenge their parents death. how they do that is the rest of the story. songs are OK but "yena kunju kunju" was good.
trisha looks beautiful. vijay seems to get overboard with repetitive performances like this. it's time he should try something different now. go watch out "aathi" if u are a illayathalapathy fan!!
