Toy Story 3 (2010)
A fun animated adventure for all ages!
Toy Story 3 is magical movie masterpiece, that has the ability to capture any audience of an age. It's funny, it's clever, it will make you cry with laughter and with tears, and it's also much much darker than the previous two Toy Story films, so expect to be both shocked and surprised!
Plot Summary: When Andy leaves for collage his toys believe its a good idea to head for Sunnyside Daycare centre; this is so they can all be played with once again by kids. However the children at the centre turn out to be incredibly rough, and the gang soon release they've made a terrible mistake.
Flightplan (2005)
A high-flying thriller! Excellent!
The recently widowed Jodie Foster boards a public plane with her young daughter in order to head for New York with her husband's coffin, which is also on board. However Foster wakes up from a nap to find her daughter has vanished.
After a rocky take-off, the film rapidly becomes a tense and gripping thrill ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end. It's easy to swallow the film's far-fetched plot because you are sucked into the movie's dramatic, tense and exciting world. The audience are invited into a guessing game as to what could have happened to the protagonist's daughter. We're served with an array of red herrings and possibilities of what could have happened to the little girl. Was she kidnapped? If so, who buy? Is it the suspicious looking passengers? Or is it even the crew that are to blame? Or is the little girl just another product of Foster's character's delusional mind? Prehaps her daughter was never on the plane in the first place?
It's a fun, high-flying thriller that keeps you on your toes, and it's packed with many twists and turns. The cast is good, led by outstanding performances from Foster and Sean Bean (who plays the pilot), who make you feel your on board the plane with them. A must see!
Disaster Movie (2008)
And you thought 'Meet the Spartans' was bad?!
Considering watching this film? Because if you are I suggest you go and do something more enjoyable, like eating glass or ripping out your own eyeballs.
Soon as I saw the names Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer in the opening credits a chill was sent down my spine...I knew those responsible for the appalling 'Meet the Spartans' were behind this so-called film, and once again Friedberg & Seltzer haven't failed to meet expectations, and have spewed out another blindly awful comedy.
The main problem is the jokes just aren't funny. The script is very badly written, and the film very badly directed. If it was directed that is, because it just seems that a load of scenes have been thrown together to create a clumsy, incoherent mess. Rather than concentrating on producing decent material, it seems Friedberg and his little friend Seltzer only care about throwing in as many satirical celebrity figures as possible. None of them funny.
Never have I watched a film that's been so bad it's made me angry. The fact is, if a comedy ever has the names: Jason Friedberg or Aaron Seltzer in it, stay well away, because it will be guaranteed to be another Disaster Movie.
Dead Set (2008)
A zesty spin on Zombie horror!
Charlie Brooker's brilliant mini-series will have you hooked from start to finish! Dead set is a colourful cocktail of horror, humour, and drama, and when you add one of the most well-known reality TV shows to the mix, you have something refreshingly original, that any horror, Big Brother or casual movie lover will enjoy!
The series is simply well-done. Good writing, good direction and good acting, and you can't tell it was made on a limited budget either...great effects! The characters are realistic and best of all the show is unpredictable...breaking the mould and the usual horror clichés.
Go watch it, you'll love it!
Camp Blood (2000)
The worst film i have ever seen.
Idiots go camping and act like idiots before they finally die like idiots, yes Camp Blood (or if you're wanting an awful, badder than bad pun that suits a badder than bad film, "Camp Bloody awful"), is so bad it's actually quite depressing to watch. And it has all the ingredients to be a perfectly bad film...
Awful acting-check. Bad script-check. Tacky effects-check no originality whatsoever-double check.
It doesn't even attempt to be different, and is riddled with every predicted cliché imaginable. For example, the film opens to a couple having sex in the woods, so of course they end up dead.
One of the most disturbing things is that this film actually spawned two sequels, how and why only baffles the mind.
Just stay away from this one.
The Dark Knight (2008)
A great knight at the cinema!
Dark Knight is a thoroughly enjoyable film for all ages, old or young, Batman fan or not, The Dark Knight (queue the awful pun) makes a great knight out at the cinema! Why? Well it's simply well made. The directing is good, the script good, the acting good, the effects good...all just...good. I've never cared two hoots about Batman, and although catching glimpses of previous Batman films, this is the first I've watched properly.
The plot is original and inventive, it also has a grittiness and an unpredictable air (you're never sure how the film will actually end). Thus, the plot is certainly a cut above the simplistic hero/villain scenario; as it will have been covered in most other reviews, I won't bother explaining it.
The script is packed with those witty one-liners that are a pleasure to hear, and the comedy present in places works well. The Joker, played to perfection by Heath Ledger. has been written with wit and humour, making him one of the film's most pleasing assets. After seeing the joker you just can't wait for the next scene with him in it, played and written brilliantly. And of course Mr Dark Knight himself is played well, however, Batman's voice rates a little high on the cheeseometer (a little cheesy); but this is a minor fault, and when the characters are played this well, who really cares? And of course the effects are done well too.
Explosions, flipping trucks and monstrous crashes add to the fun.
So with family or friends, with kids or with daughters, are you an avid Batman fan? Or have you never watched a Batman film (like I hadn't) in your life? Well I can guarantee you'll enjoy this.
The Happening (2008)
It's happening...a bad film is being smeared across cinemas
I've just come back from the cinema after watching this, and, it was bizarre to say the least. To be fair, at least it was what most flicks (especially horrors) aren't these days, and that's original. But really, despite being mildly creepy, it was all a bit silly to take seriously. I mean, when you have the main character actually talking to a rubber plant, you have to ask yourself if the writer was under the influence alcohol when writing the script (a.k.a well and truly sloshed).
Me and my friends found ourselves laughing at bits that we should have been scared of, and at times, it's hard to tell whether the film is trying to be serious or funny. The film tends to raise many questions, but fails to answer any. You wait and wait for answers, but there's none, and the ending is just pathetic. And don't even get me started on the acting! I didn't find the film boring, it's watchable, but it could have been a lot better if more logical thinking went into the whole thing.
2point4 Children (1991)
Weird, Witty and Wonderful!
A weird, witty and wonderful depiction of family life! Writer Andrew Marshall has written something that is funny, foreboding and occasionally frightening! Yes, don't be fooled by 2point4 children's cheerful tune and bubbly characters; the show has a dark side, and at times can be quite chilling. And that's what's so good about the show, it's not just a simplistic sitcom where every character is a 2D comic device (the case with My Family). Instead the characters are fully rounded individuals that show the full roller-coaster of human emotions. The occasionally dark moments such as Bill being supposedly haunted by a curse and Ben waking up in a bizarre village are two examples of the show taking a surreal, dark turn, that help add a little depth. Of course the show is also incredibly funny, and is a guaranteed to make you smile. It's a real shame Eureka Video have stopped releasing this comical gold on DVD. Veoh.com is your last hope to get hold of episodes unavliable in the shops.
The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1994)
Kim Henkel, lower your head in shame.
For a film thatV was written, directed and produced by the author of the original (Mr Kim Henkel), you'd expect something a little better than this.
Firstly, the characters are completely stupid; rather than running away from Leatherface and Co, the victim locks himself in their house! Secondly the acting is terrible, apart from a decent performance from Mathew McConaughey as the electronically-legged "Vilmer".
Thirdly, despite the words "Chainsaw Massacre" in the title, there's no "chainsaw massacre" (nobody actually gets killed with a chainsaw!). Fourthly, the events in the film are either completely random or don't make sense, usually its both. For example, a girl will be placed on a meat hook
she's then seen crawling across a road? What?! And towards the end (A SPOILER FOLLOWS
), Vilmer gets hit for no apparent reason by a random plane, that springs out of nowhere! I don't quite understand what Henkel trying to do with this one, but he's failed miserably. One thing's for sure however, he defiantly wasn't sober when writing or directing this. If he was sober, then he must have dropped the full copy of the script on the way to the studio, picked the pages back up, and then put them in a random order
that's what this film feels like. However, despite what a terrible terrible mess the film is, it's amazingly not all bad. The black humour does work well, and some of the characters are entertaining to watch. Leatherface, despite being far too whiny than menacing, personality wise he's far closer to the original Leatherface's persona than in any other sequel. However, despite these positives, the film is far outnumbered in negatives; it isn't a good sequel, but at least it's to an extent entertaining, unlike Chainsaw 3 which is just boring.
Kim Henkel said he wanted to bring the series back to the "spirit of the original", but the only spirit was the one he was drinking before he began writing the script. Watchable for the casual audience, but if your fan of the series you'll be very disappointed.
