The Tape (2021)
Feel good, good sounds
To be fair, the story is not remarkable - been there done that kind of thing. But that's where the comparisons end. The scenery, acting, sound track and general effect on my well being were totally remarkable. Watchable, fun and with a cracking dependable ending, I could ignore any and all of the few faults. I am Cornish and live a long way away from the sea, but the imagery and seascapes stole my heart. The lead character Tally is so engaging, her delivery, timing and total performance tied the film to a rock, by the ocean. Wonderful. I agree, the lack of reviews is lamentable, but hopefully this will change with time. One to watch in a troubled world.
Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)
Disappointment and disbelief - avoid watching!
Well, that's 90 minutes of my life I won't get back! Wish I hadn't stuck it out so long. I gave it 1 star because I couldn't give it zero!
We loved the TV series for it's realistic and believable story lines and Iris Elba was so convincing in the role.
Jump forward to this pile of ridiculous rubbish and everything falls apart.
The plot is simply so extreme that it's not even credible, let alone believable! The main evil character appears as motiveless, blessed with super-human powers and exudes pure evil. One example, we see Elba and his colleague Raine depart for the northern extremes of Norway; must've missed the reason while yawning. They get there in next to no time and drive out into the frozen expanses in Luther's battered ancient Volvo. Next you see them walking after getting stuck in mountains of snow, wearing only their open neck shirts with coats unbuttoned. I mean, their destination is an ice covered mansion, literally in the middle of nowhere, where temperatures would only be survivable in full arctic gear! It's simply ridiculous and reminiscent of a comic strip hero series.
Anyway, we struggled on, hoping for some sense, but finally quit with about 35 minutes to go, when the story line descended even beyond the daft level it had reached. Evil is certainly part of humanity, but this film portrays pure, revolting evil as a popular, subscription service, entertainment feature for a perverted, exclusively male internet audience.
Possibly the worst film I have ever tried to watch.
I Came By (2022)
Good scary movie
Deserves a better rating than the current 5.9 (Sept 3rd 2022). It's well made, quite scary in places and if predictably far fetched at times, it's very entertaining, highly watchable and extremely well acted. The four main characters are very believable, putting in superb performances. Hugh Bonnerville is obviously great, but for me, the star actor was Percelle Ascott. Not seen him before, but his performance was totally excellent and realistic. His conflicts between friendship and family seemed to emulate so much in life these days. Equally notable are Kelly Macdonald and of course George MacKay turning in solid performances. Finally, Varada Sethu came through strongly as a feisty wife.
The Weekend Away (2022)
Ignore the low scores
This is an entertaining and well acted movie. Not Oscar material, but hey, it's a great watch. Those people who say it's predictable, boring or transparent must either be super-sleuths, rejected actors or really, really superior beings. We enjoyed it and didn't guess the ending at all.
Hit and Run (2021)
Unwatchable
Regrettably this is not watchable. Much of the dialogue is in Israeli and the subtitles are so fast, I could only read perhaps 50% of the two line plus ones. Very frustrating as it looked like it had good potential. Even the rare one liner was often only on the screen for a nanosecond. Why do producers do that? For non Israeli speakers (or any other language for that matter), making complex lines of dialogue appear and disappear in such a short space of time is ridiculous.
Line of Duty (2012)
Nope - several steps too far
Sorry to say another case of 'should've quit while you were ahead. We watched the first several series which were good, but this is depressingly bad. Loud music, indecipherable script, politically correct, weak storyline to name but a few faults. Couldn't finish episode 1 it was so bad. Don't waste your time, it's rubbish our opinion.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Soft, poor,corn
I rarely quit a movie, but that was unavoidable with this one. Hardly deserves the description as 'rubbish' - it's an insult the art of movie making. Avoid!
