Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017)
one time watch
excellent performances from both leads, lives upto the expectations post dumb laga ke haisha. they both choose good films which cover sensitive and real topics, making their viewing even better. disappointing to learn the story is a remake, therefore not an original, but, a great film none the less. the ending is slightly off putting as it becomes too unrealistic and quite bollywood. songs not so great, there could have been a nice romantic number by ayushman khurrana himself would have made the film better.
Lion (2016)
Stunning
This film deserves all the praises it has received, and more! Excellent performances by all, especially the child artist who plays saroo. A true story full of emotion and performances that leave you in tears throughout the film. I was crying during and after the film, and that shows just how powerful the film really was.
Dukhtar (2014)
Moving and well acted
Wow. I loved watching this film. I wouldn't say it tackles a social problem or delivers a message exactly, the performances are far too moving and personal to be about anything other than the story of this mother and daughter. And that is an anecdote to how good the performances are. Extremely moving film it makes you feel what the mother is feeling during so many scenes. A must watch.
Hindi Medium (2017)
Good story
So refreshing to have seen a film that addresses a social problem faced by not the very rich or the very poor, but two different types of people in between. Excellent performances from underrated stars, and enough humour to keep the momentum going throughout the film. Kudos to the film makers for the excellent concept and choice of actors
Phillauri (2017)
Not worth a watch
If a film isn't excellent or great, its good, or at least average enough to watch once. Unfortunately Philauri doesn't fit into either of the mentioned categories. I can usually tolerate a film but this film was so hard to be entertained with I was actually waiting for it to finish. In retrospect walking out of the cinema hall would not have been a stupid thing to do. The only reason I believe many will watch is due to Anushka's production, out of curiosity as she is such a great artist, but prepared to be strongly disappointed. The flashbacks are painful and there is very little emotion drawn from any scene which is distasteful from an actor like Anushka. Lets hope her future productions focus more on good stories and sensible acting rather than just her.
Gypsy (2017)
Will there be another season?
Excellent watch, the episodes really unravel the hidden extents humans can go to when their emotions are on the line. It is somewhat ironic that the therapist is the one you end up thinking needs the most therapy and her twisted journey may seem insane at first but as the episodes go on you really become attached to the main character, knowing her desires, her insecurities and her actual character. One minute you can't identify with what she is doing while the next the program cleverly reminds you what she is feeling could so easily be what you may have felt, and that's what made me really connect with her. Without giving too much away the ending promises a second season, I would definitely give it a watch!
Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016)
A good watch
A lovely story looking into the lives of four ordinary Indian women and the social and personal challenges they face on a day to day basis. The film scores 10/10 for reflecting reality, which creates empathy amongst its viewers. It has a couple of songs and funny scenes, so, it isn't all about delivering a strong message, it does entertain too. I would definitely want my mother in law's generation to watch it! The performances from the actors are strong. So great to see a film based on good actors, and a real story line
Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)
Not as bad as people are making out
If you watch this film expecting to walk away really knowing the characters in the title, you won't as the story does not bring out the best in either character as it could have done. The film is a one time watch for the star factors involved, and doesn't disappoint for the localties and songs but again I think Bollywood audiences have surpassed the same craze that existed in the 90's for foreign locations and catchy songs unless it bears some weight to the actual story or character which in this case it doesn't. Anushka's performance is in your face funny if you appreciate seeing her pull a gujrati accent with gujrati phrases. The film could have been an outright comedy had the male lead been portrayed in the same way but the balance between romance and comedy that has been attempted in SRK's character is a disaster in this film as you can't associate him with just romance or just comedy.
