Kroll Show (2013)
Hilarious send up of reality TV
I had an awful week and this show was just what I needed -- totally goofy and absurd. Nick Kroll is amazing in huge variety of characters, John Daly is hysterical, and so are so many of the recurring and guest characters. Really clever how all the fake reality shows interconnect. Whoever does Nick Kroll's wigs should get an award. Dr. Armond and his whole subplot are hysterical, and Bobby Bottleservice's malapropisms ("we're investigating paralegal activity") and excessive use of "as well as" made me LOL. If you've seen any reality TV, you'll appreciate the cleverness of this show. Only thing I could do without is "Oh Hello" -- that got tedious for me. But overall love the show and sorry there are only 3 seasons.
Hacks (2021)
Smart and funny commentary on intergenerational relationships among women in comedy
Solid! I could have done without the (for lack of a better word) hacky and hateful Jewish stereotypes in episode 4 of season 1, "D'Jewelry", but other than that have thoroughly enjoyed. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are great.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
One of the most brilliant shows I've ever seen
I don't usually like musicals, but the songs on this show are incredible. But more important, this show is one of the smartest, funniest, and most compassionate shows I've ever seen. I love that it deconstructs so many of the stupid, harmful ideas we get from pop culture--not even just those directed at women but really all of us: the idea that finding love can "fix" us, the believe in destiny, the idea that we have one true love out there. And it does it in a hilarious, entertaining way. The characters are all complex and ultimately likable, and I also like that the show seems to make a point of showing people working out their conflicts in mature, honest, compassionate, productive ways. I'm sure some will see the musicals and the bright colors and the female protagonist and dismiss this show as shallow (like several of the reviews below), but they are completely missing the point. The show has tremendous depth.
Broad City (2014)
Brilliant and hilarious from beginning to end
This was a fantastic show from beginning to end. It managed to be both laugh-out-loud funny and incredibly sweet and poignant, with Abbi and Ilana actually growing and maturing throughout the show, especially in the last season, in a way that was touching and believable. The relationship between the two of them was so beautifully drawn as the kind of intense female friendship that's so hard to have after your 20s. And their schemes and adventures were often just so hysterical (and weirdly relatable, for me at least as someone who lives in NYC). Amazing supporting cast and guest stars too -- Hannibal Buress as Lincoln, Jaime, Ilana's rage-filled coworker at Deals! Deals! Deals! always cracked me up, Bevers (loved his cousin Marla), Amy Sedaris's guest appearances, etc. This show was truly sublime, and I'm glad it ended when it did so it went out on a high note.
