Past Lives tells the story of the very common people. Human emotions are so complicated and vague, like Jaime Lannister said, "we don't get to choose whom we love."
The movies show that the protagonists fall in love with the ones they get to be with in their lives. But there are a few films who actually portray the other side of the coin, like Roman Holiday, La La Land- where we get to know that sometimes things don't go the way we want things to go. In this genre of films, I think Past Lives is the epitome.
It catches the emotion in the most accurate way with the way of storytelling and acting, the surroundings are not too cinematic, the daily life of the characters is not extraordinarily different than common people. It all fits so realistically.
Seeing this film is like visualizing a real story, so real that we all know about this, it's all around us, but it's too pointless to talk about it.
