Good direction, poorly navigated
7 May 2022
This seems like an attempt to do to Scooby Doo what Riverdale did to Archie Comics, but with much more appropriate source material to work with. The universe of Scooby Doo far better lends itself to a teen supernatural/crime drama. However, the writers really dropped the ball. Every interaction comes off so poorly. The script and plot progression is more ham-fisted than any live action Disney Channel movie. 80% of the "teen" actors look like they're 30-40 years old. We actually have really good teenage actors nowadays, so why are we using failed adult actors to play high schoolers? It's not 2000 anymore. Also the writers must have just imagined what they thought ultra cool high schoolers act like nowadays without consulting anyone who graduated high school in the past 10 years. I don't think any of the writers have ever seen what a drug deal or rave looks like.

In short, the script is poorly executed despite the writers having so much to work with, none of the conversations or interactions feel like they progress naturally or realistically, and the overwhelming majority of the actors should be recast.

Interesting, unique, and original
20 March 2020
Honestly a quality animation. The art style, characters, and story are all enjoyable and original. Although it leaves some questions unanswered it was an all-around fun experience. I don't really understand the complaints of some of the reviews. Nothing in the movie felt forced. Sure, a little more exposition would've been nice, but I don't think it was necessary for the story. It was meant to be relatively short and able to stand on it's own for what it is. It wasn't supposed to be an epic masterpiece with an extensive history and a fantastical world full of surprises. The movie does what it sets out to do, and I enjoyed the ride. It didn't have me busting a gut with laughter or crying from emotion, but it was a fun and unique piece of art that I enjoyed. Certainly a lot better than some recent major production films.

If not for the animation, could have been better

The voice acting is pretty good, aside from the bad accents courtesy of the side characters. The premise is interesting enough, however a few of the twists and turns felt hamfisted. Decent potential that was severely underplayed by the animation.

It felt like they were trying to copy the style of animation from Archer, but it doesn't work well at all in a horror setting and it isn't done as well either. The character movements are overly cartoony and robotic, not fluid at all. The characters themselves are cliche with no memorable aspects and no depth whatsoever.

The few attempts at comic relief fall utterly flat. One joke later in the movie made me smirk for a couple seconds, and more so because the characters were laughing together than any genuine humor, like the effects of a TV sitcom laugh track.

All things considered, it had a decent foundation but the unpleasant and unfitting animation style totally pulls you out of any of the redeeming factors of the movie. It felt like it was animated by a couple of high school students with too much free time in their digital art class. With a different style of animation that a team had put real effort into, a little more exposition and lead-up, and a little more character depth this could've been a pretty good movie. Struggled to give it a 3 instead of a 1 or 2 but I could at least see what they were going for in this film.

Poorly executed
2 February 2020
The story had decent foundations and some good twists, but it was so poorly executed you could see every plot twist coming from a mile away. In the end most of the characters didn't matter at all, there's no resolution of any kind, the whole thing relied heavily on jump scares that didn't even work well, and you're left with more questions than answers. Overall a crappy movie in an oversaturated genre. This movie had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

The exact opposite of "A MUST SEE"

The premise of this movie is interesting enough. That's the only interesting thing about it, though. A mysterious series of puzzles to be solved by a young man, left for him by his grandfather. The pacing is breakneck, exposition is non-existent, dialogue is mediocre at its best moments and garbage at its worst, acting is decent enough but with the terrible script you're constantly groaning and sighing at everything they say. None of the characters are memorable, they're all total chiches. Also these people apparently live in a world where the existence of MKUltra isn't common knowledge. So many plot-holes as well, a lot of important questions left unanswered for no discernable reason other than lazy writing.
