Shane (1953)
So good, but could have been better

Just watched this. Loved it.
Still. While Alan Ladd played the part well, he was clothed wrong, and was too friendly too soon. In the novella, Shane came in dressed in black, except for his fine -- but worn -- white shirt. And he was somewhat dark -- dark hair, dark eyes, a sense of danger emanating from him. In fact, the film misses this element.
A key line in the book is when someone says that Shane is dangerous, and the reply from Starrett is that Shane is dangerous, but not to us.
The stump scene is done well, but not as well in the book.
I'd love to see this remade, a la "True Grit,, and have it follow the book more closely, as the more recent "True Grit" indeed did.
