Sora wo Kakeru Yodaka (2018)
Something all teens should watch
I'm not a teenager, and much like another reviewer here, it was suggested to me because I watched Erased on Netflix, and after watching that I felt like binging on some Japanese dramas.
That being said, this is something I'd make my daughters watch when they're teenagers, as the series aims to give the watchers a sense of empathy for both sides of the coin. You feel bad for the unpopular girl and understand her actions, but you also feel bad for the popular girl because the switch takes her away from her family and friends.
The popular girl does NOT become instantly shy in the unpopular girls body, the person who said that must not have paid much attention. She only becomes less outgoing because people will not pay attention to her and think she is weird, which is what the series does well at, creating a sense of empathy and understanding.
Boku dake ga inai machi (2017)
Better than the anime
I'm not much of an anime fan, but the concept of the anime version of this was enough for me to give it a go, and I like it up until the last few episodes. I wish I'd seen this first.
This for me filled the void left by the anime version as it was quite different. It was less obvious who the killer/kidnapper was, and the way he was caught was less far-fetched.
The general vibe of the series was just far better, much similar to another Japanese title I like 'Memories of Matsuko'. The series gets you thinking, and makes you feel good.
The Purge: Election Year (2016)
Not much to say apart from that it's boring
I was looking forward to watching Purge movies after seeing a few episodes of the series which is fantastic, but this failed to live up to my expectations which perhaps was the problem.
My main issue is with the way the writing handles the main character. Simply showing a quick clip at the beginning showing what happened to her was not enough for me to really care about her.
I'll give other Purge movies a try and hopefully they're better than this one.
Turn (2014)
Season 2 is where it really starts
Looking for a new historical series to entertain me that is authentic to the times was quite difficult after watching Black Sails which is a tough one to beat for thrills. However, this show came close to that. Although the first season was good, I just felt it had a bias to it. The British were either idiots or just unreasonably cruel, where as the Patriots were perfect angels, though I did enjoy the plot and the characters, it got me invested enough to watch Season 2.
Season 2 was where the show really began to shine. No longer were the Redcoats all evil or just plain idiotic, but instead, some like Major Andre and Major Hewlett were shown to be good people in the wrong line of work. Washington in season 2 onwards, is a flawed character, more man than he was in season 2 and it really creates possibly the best Washington I've ever seen in movies or TV because we learn more about the man.
The plots in the show are tense, and if you don't know the history behind certain key characters then it will surprise you. The history and setting is quite authentic and the humour is spot on.
I'd highly recommend this show
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
Unimaginative, fails to live up to the build up
I'm a more recent Star Trek fan and have recently moved onto the movies. I have to say, this one was a bigger disappointment to Star Trek I for me.
After the how brilliant 'The Wrath of Khan' was, I was hoping Star Trek III would be a worthy follow up, but even the title seemed a little unimaginative now I look at it.
The story takes forever building up, has some great moments during that, for example, the Klingons are brilliant but it just lacks some imagination much like how 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' often felt.
It's like the franchise took one huge step forward, Star Trek II was an exciting film but still about morality at the end of the day, but this film offers none of it.
The Orville (2017)
Proof that Seth MacFarlane is an amazing writer
The critics must have based their review on the pilot, which isn't very professional not to give the show a good few episodes before writing their opinion.
This show has the perfect balance of drama, adventure and the comedy to lighten up what are actually some dark and difficult topics. It is an excellent social critique of some of todays issues. Much like the original series of Star Trek but with the humour of Seth.
This to me is absolute proof that Seth is an excellent writer, not just in comedy. You don't have to be a fan of his other works to thoroughly enjoy this one, this is the best he has ever done and is very different to the humour in Ted, A Million Ways To Die in The West, Family Guy and American Dad.
