Tenet (2020)
Interesting ideas sterilized by unrelatable characters
Main character in this movie seemed like some random child-like protagonist of yet another mediocre action videogame. He had simply nothing to loose and the sympathy towards the ill treated wife of mafioso nemesis was not properly exposed or developed in any believable way. Two intensive time traveling salted action scenes (not including the final battle which looked like online match with lags) are quite memorable and are on par with those of Inception. This is however enough only to make a good trailer not a whole good movie.
Some Girls (1988)
Brilliant parable on virtues disguised as a some trivial teen comedy
This movie is so much above its league that it is very heavily misunderstood. It has cleverly built funny moments and some elements which make good teen comedy, however it turns very quickly to unexpected directions exploring some more important aspects of life giving a fresh take on centuries long philosophical disputes. It may require patience but expect some reward.
8-Bit Christmas (2021)
Heartwarming parable of endless desire with Home Alone vibes
Many of us who spent their childhood in 80s or early 90s can immediately relate to the child protagonists of this movie who are craving to own or at least play some games on the holy grail of videogaming back then - the expensive 8 bit NES console. The story is however made quite approachable and likeable not only to fans of retro gaming but to everyone - the theme of striving to achieve something, failing repeatedly in the process and probably not achieving it in the end (while finding even more important things on the way) is an universal human experience. The acting is pretty solid, funny moments cleverly built. Definitely best Christmas movie of 2021.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Too fast to be a horror and too slow to be an action movie
This movie suffers from videogame-like haste which seriously devaluates all the expected horror elements. The few aliens are too quick to show up and too easy to be killed when they need to be. The spaceship crew is seconding with its imbalanced modes of artificial stupidity and superhuman invulnerability. I thought that Spider Man could arrive at one moment to help them and it would not do any (more) damage to the movie.
The philosophical topic, which I guess should have hold this together, that is: how (easily) creation of irresponsible creator becomes an irresponsible creator himself (e.g. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree) is too simple to provide enough engagement in the viewer and finally shows up that the foundation of Alien shouldn't be sought in some additionally injected religious thoughts but in disturbing suspense of the dark corners.
Sacred Vow (2016)
Surprisingly deep mix of family drama/romance with solid acting
I found this movie to be most interesting in the middle, when the main drama develops and is presented through nicely stylized long camera shots. Pity that it hurries too obviously to the conclusive moralization. If only was the director/writer able to go on bit longer with ambiguity and open endedness, it could serve his goals much better.
The main cast is performing well with outstanding Shawn Stevens. Dialog sequences and narrative style is quite suggestive and realistic except some out-of-the-schoolbook wisdom said by pastor, which sounded way too much omnipotently detached and forced in the context. Minor flaws are however easily to be forgiven here since this movie is overall very good, original and refreshing. Looking forward to see more stuff from the director
