The hype works at its best
21 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
True. In my country the ticket has gone up unreasonably. Reviews came from movie goers even experts e.g directors make this film as a must see not only for horror lovers but also korean movie lovers. Yes. The hype. Now does it worth it? My answer is no.

Actors are well known. The shaman lady supposed hold the major key to scare spectators. Kim Go Eun should have learnt from Vera Vermiga portraying the famous psychich Lorraine Warren. People have no idea how was Lorraine Warren in real. But Vermiga shows no matter her extra capability and expertise, she's never in fine mood during scanning or experiencing any paranormal activity.

And when eventually the evil is a giant samurai is somehow outrageous. Never described how that's possible. I am sensing classic Hollywood horror which exploiting unexplained creatures. Not stopping there, the giant samurai could alter into huge fireball. Ouch!

So I was so curious, because viewers comparing it with The Wailing, then I'm disappointed. Indeed The Wailing is a must see, way better plot and end in one horrific scene. Many other must see Korean thriller/horror movies are: The Call and The Forgotten.

Anyway my appreciation is on the script, connecting the history of Peninsula. Other thing to give a thumb up is the cinematography.

Blame the script
20 February 2024
Step into theater with wife because of Johnson. Film is so popcorn. Don't mind the CGI & visual effects. Film is totally like late 80s or 90s, so predictable plot. Script wasn't well developed. No drama or anything to twist the ending. So no wonder when eventually Ezekiel easily finished.

The only thing to help the simplicity was supposed to be on Johnson. Frankly what we saw was just same vibe of Cassie from one scene to another. Johnson should have left home her smiley face and get into character more. Johnson should have dig the character deeper.

Sony had pushed too much for this spiderverse to be on. I believe by all the success of MCU, they should have cancelled this and do many corrections and improvisation for the sake of the company.

Indeed it is one flop. Very sorry for how I have expected since its first trailer.

Good Story
7 November 2023
Good story, good script, but poor casting. Ine didn't show enough how stressful her character supposedly. Many scenes may be acceptable for foreign spectators but not for indonesians because those are not common and almost unreal on daily basis, e.g the presentation in small room with only few audiences but still use mic and enhanced speaker/sound system, the repetition of using neon ring in recording video, the teachers/school staffs silky uniform, and the autopeds.

Ine, Dwi and Prilly well representing the look of javanese but not Angga neither the Gora character, much better if Gora is a dark skin boy to appear as a disturbed person. Indeed not all javanese have dark skin, but only few have light skin. This would take the audience more to the vibe of central java, the hot air, mostly drought in long summer, etc.

I also found director pushing Ine to shed tears in many scenes by put the camera focusing on her in minutes, frankly tears were just hanging in her eyes, question is why not to put a bit of fake tears on it? Prilly is the only actress which easily shed tears which suit the drama.

Scorsese tasted Tarantino
2 November 2023
I didn't do enough checks before seeing this film. My wife asked me so let's go. I sensed a Tarantino nuance at first but not as much as his as I know. So it's true it is not his fruit.

Story is so simple and predictable. Sadly true happened or still happening in many nations when it comes about greed and one innocence. But anyway the simple and predictable plot is well packed by good cinematography.

Caprio in the other hand was not digging up enough his acting skill to enrich his character. I'm thinking like maybe a traumatic war veteran with wounds in his soul then falling in love but all the head bumps he got went him bit of lunatic.

My high appreciation for many native American actors that had shown the complexity, the confuse, at the age of how they welcome settlers with trust end up one horrible genocide.

Fascinating
29 March 2023
What I like about this franchise ever since is fighting to kill then weapons are used including firearms. Bullets shot in short range is one crazy thing from over million others. Also how action is started very soon when the movie is on. People killing each other, rumble, brawl, combat in the middle of civilization. But, I wish, director speeds up the fight just a lil bit. I almost sense of Keanu moves the way Liam Neeson did in Taken. Indeed Keanu, Hiroyuki and Donnie are not young anymore. I believe the thrill would move audience more if kicks and punches thrown faster.

Am a big fan of Scott Adkins and so remarkable he is a chubby evil villain here. Good choice. Bet audience who doesn't know him would be wowed, the big butt antagonist does spin kick.

I also find few trade marks of past movies from actors brought back, Donnie for swinging fist.

Last but not least, such films are getting away from reality, too bad, bullet proof suits, rolling falling down on 200 steps without injuries, well, better if such scenario is re-looked if the franchise goes on.

Thank you.

Second Best after Shazam
3 November 2022
DC, what's going on with you guys? Be yourself, keep it in dark if you had to. No need at all to compete with Marvel. Even Marvel not well to keep up their scores, see their recent movies. You did it again, make your movies fun and forced comedic scenes. Stop it, for God's sake. For how Johnson frowns for entire over 2 hours, plus the black suit, should have been so dark not that "colorful". You guys can't compete by CGI anymore, similar for every movie nowadays, but you can be dynamic with script, plot and the characters building.

Anyway it is second best after Shazam for DC.

The Superman end credit scene? Cavill is getting back. Never really into Cavill for my childhood superhero. I was thinking about 7 but when Cavill showed up, so it is 5.

My mom would have her thumbs up
3 June 2022
My mom passed last Feb. We often spent movie times before. Such a wonderful view if after she said good movie. She would, yes she would have for this Top Gun: Maverick, she would smile with her two thumbs up, one more thing, we could see tears left on her eyes and cheek.

Simple drama packed in never ever action scenes. We hold our breath several times. There wouldn't be dead heroes, I knew it, it is modern film with classic touch, 80's touch to be precise. Awesome!

Miss my mom so much.

Grillo & Butler in one movie?
22 January 2022
How i reacted at first and soon rush to nearest theater.

Been fan of Grillo since Homefront. He was so cold and evil. Perhaps Hollywood sees what I do. He got his own movies as protagonist, frankly many didn't work well. But this time he got good script and good director. This is Grillo's best movie. One note for him, Murretto supposed to be lame and vulnerable at first, keep audience in wonder if he was right.

Two thumbs up for Joe Carnahan, like he went to the temple of John Woo, Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie.

Expecting more for the climax
3 October 2021
Daniel Craig era is a total new Bond. Some directors have creatively combined classic plot with modern action. I found No Time To Die (NTTD) such fascinating since the first scene. Frankly, the director couldn't keep the surprises up till end. The climax is too predictable and I wish no more encounter and conversation between villain and Bond, then Bond no sweat skips all arms pointed to him. Please, conventional Bond had long gone.

NTTD also had wasted the supposed to be big role for Rami Malek, the oscar winner. Everyone waits for this, and nothing special about him. The story is simple, well decorated on first hour by amazing action scenes, but not ended nicely. This time Craig shows fragile Bond, emotions over his mind, I wish he is as cold as usual. Think of the final dispute between Safin and Bond is longer, difficult, dramatic and tricky. I always hate stories or scenes depicting the hero could hold the shots while everyone else just died instantly by only one bullet.

I believe best villains in Craig's Bond era are still Javier Bardem and Madds Mikkelsen.

This movie reminds me of the song
16 June 2021
Me and wife watched this movie, and one actress surprised us, bring us back to 15 years ago, it is Ana de la Reguera ... We laughed on the song ... Encarnacion ... Encarnacio ... o ... o ... on ... Sorry 'gigling' it is Nacho Libre, one of our favorite movie.

Now let's talk about Army of The Dead. Lame plot. Boring zombies. Predictable story. CGI so-so.

'Gosh' ... I just got too much expectation after Justice League Snyder's Cut.

Simple and stunning
11 June 2021
It is always a matter of how you pack it. Like MCU deals with Avengers, we know the main stream of the classic 100 Dalmatians, we know they try to twist the supposed to be simple plot, some know the mother and daughter feud, but whole scenes are so entertaining, not just the fashion blast but to mix classic story with modern plot is very well done. For me, Stone did awesome act, but I believe it is the genius of the director to blend so many things into over two hours of fascination. Don't be worried being bored. Cruella is stunning.

Fascinating
6 May 2021
I found songs are so annoying at first. Later on, okay, those got along with plot and scenes. The story behind is a twist of mostly common script. I know from the title, simply the man is not just nobody. But, it is the man who misses the rumble, it is quite something new. Odenkirk nailed it. Fighting and the brutal gang war at final scene are well done.

Sequel? Why not!

Btw when first I saw the trailer, the on bus fight, looks like Daniel Bernhardt fights his older brother.

Not new idea but very well done
9 April 2021
It is my first movie on theatre as they are reopening.

Another one? Tragedy by natural disaster? Cosmic apocalypse something, huh?

My concern is not much for me to enjoy the whole scenes. Actors did well. A big appreciation for director. Some would see it is 2012 repackaged, kind of, but the acts cover it all up. The drama of devastating chaotic world for not knowing what to do to survive, kind people blends with evil people are surrounding them, I feel the tension is so real.

Way much better than 2012.

I just saw it and did not finish it
4 February 2021
Too many try to be scenes. The rumble scenes definitely try to look like The Raid. The villains try to look like Suicide Squad. The funny scenes is forced. Well, no making sense stuffs when it comes to superheroe movies, but audience needs to put their questions to many things else, e.g the act of the actors which frankly are so-so. I can get the not good enough CGI, but so mind about the whole story, since been a big fan of the late Mr. Hasmi.

Classic and superb!
14 December 2019
It is much easier to see another Captain America with Chris Evans, but not to see James Bond with Daniel Craig! Craig is so bold to change his persona here. He is deep in his role, smart, sharp and funny. Craig combines Poirot and Holmes in one character.

I supposed Evans and Craig, happen to be the famous actors for famous and favorite characters, yet should change their appearance, e.g hair style. This would help audience a lot to focus on the story.

It is classic detective film in modern era. Superb!

The Wayne? Too soon!
5 October 2019
I thought it is a totally 100% spin off, it is not. Joker should be kept off from anything related with DCEU. I remember the first ever explanation about Joker was Joker is ghost, nobody knows how he came from. People only could be guessing. Yes, it is Ledger's Joker, by telling us how he got the cheek scar, with two different stories, we say Ledger's Joker is super sick.

Now, this movie somehow has priviledge to tell the world who is Joker. Well, okay, I am fine with that, everybody is. But, Joker should haunt us like 2 or 3 more times. Let Joker wins over corrupted cops and law, then he loose control, and got to deal with the cape crusader, his famous nemesis. It is too bad, for interacting too soon with The Wayne, having terrible dispute with The Wayne, taking part with the origin of Batman, so Batman is always getting in the way for script writer to develop the story for the sequels. Joker should be left alone spreading his black wings of crime, far before trading fists with Batman eventually. It is just too bad.

DC has lifted a high standard. The one good idea not to get involve in the rivalry between DCEU and MCU. I don't remember if I laughed the way I was entertained by MCU. I also witness less of CGI, I am not sure if there was any. Great cinematography covers it all. We can sense for how Arthur Fleck alters from loser to living evil. Thumbs up for Phoenix. We read, we heard, we saw, years of agony could be giving birth to ruthless criminals. Phoenix's Joker is so real.

So I say, good luck for The Batman.

Wicked
21 August 2019
Dark comedy with a very natural plot. Somehow all the fraud shown could happen in real life. What gets me is my culture has certain similarity with Korean, perhaps it is asian curse. Actors are so deep in their roles. And well done directed. I even could sense the body scent issue, frowned at the social gap, the misery of faking our real life for others in the name of greater good. God, I laughed and swore at same time. 100% recommend this movie to all my friends.

Slim but deadly
9 July 2019
So, I need more explanation of Anna's sudden extraordinary killing skill. Two thumbs up for fighting choreographer, camera angles, and of course, Sasha Luss herself. Always big fan of Luc Besson. Sasha Luss is not that tough in reality, but this movie makes us believe she is. Sasha Luss acts very good, from gesture to impression, from the painfully hurted to viciously killing. Well done!

Good
23 May 2019
The plot is as predicted. Simply the beginning of evil Superboy. What I like about this film is it is a horror film, gore one. I heard from friends but still it is a big time surprise. I like Jacson A. Dunn, perfect casting for multiple personality act. I could see the mean soul when his time comes.

Now what I mind is the costume, yet he is not super evil-man for one dedicated costume one day, but director should come up with better idea, not has to be made-up mask and cape. What I think of is just some weird and not common teen outfit to show Brandon is different.

And I support for the sequel 100%.

Fight, bang-bang!
19 May 2019
Since John Wick 1, I admire how finally after years, action movies have problem to combine hand in hand combat with guns in one scene, it is over. John Wick 1 did it well, open our eyes with a making-sense fighting scenes of skillful hitmen.

The drama of the murdered of the beloved dog, as big reason for Wick to somehow get back in business, quite get us. But in John Wick 2 there was simple story made up for this sequel. Once again Wick is involved in fight, bang-bang! scenes. We know hundreds of scripts are available to develop the story, this one is lame. I believe it is more about the deadline and bottom line who decide drama part should step aside. Still it was a box office anyway.

Now John Wick 3, the fight, bang-bang! scenes have reached new level, dominates over 90% of the scenes. They creatively choreographed the rumbles. Gore rumbles. They also dare to use mostly steady camera shooting. Frankly resulting of unreal moves, slow punching and kicking. We clearly see many times in certain step of fight, the bounty hunters wait and give open spot for Wick to hit. This is not good. I know in Bourne trilogy, the fight scenes were totally helped by moving camera shooting, quite stressing our visions, but well-done made us believe how cool is Matt Damon, or how tough is Liam Neeson in Taken. Keanu Reeves is not young anymore, my hat off though, but they should come up with better idea to cover his age.

Last but not least, I am Indonesian and so proud of putting two fellas Indonesian martial artists in the final scenes, Cecep and Yayan. They did true awesome job.

It is also good to see Mark "paranaue" Dacascos spin his kicks once again.

Not superheroes movie
27 April 2019
What I saw is bunch of human warriors which each has special skill and ability and fight for what believed as right path. Superheroes don't joke, cry or get desperate. Superheroes don't reject any call for helps. Superheroes don't do silly things. They do. They are all human. A super kind human, with huge hearts. At the end that is what I get.

Both directors very well done bringing up a new thing, joining the heroic plot, whilst it is superhero movie we believed filled by tons of tough guys, and not anymore, every single one is vulnerable.

Thank you everyone, in producing this movie. It is a bad news for any superhero movies coming up next, though. Both from MCU or DCEU. One heavy standard has been stamped.

Chuck is Shazam
5 April 2019
Definitely I see Chuck in awesome suit. Levi nailed it! Big surprise for the Shazam family eventually.

The only lack of this movie is Asher Angel is not Zachary Levi. I would say it is wrong casting for Angel. Billy Batson and Shazam are supposed to be 100% same person, and they are not. Billy is so serious while Shazam is so relax and funny. I don't know if Angel is not well directed. Do comparison to Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy) and Adam Brody (Freddy Shazam), they did the matching well.

Keep up DCEU!

A Private War (2018)

Very well directed
21 March 2019
It is not perfect drama-biography, still I could feel the horrific battle inside the soul of a journalist who witnessed most evil all around the world.

Never knew of Marie Colvin up until now. But yes I read many news about war in middle-east or anywhere else. I believe many war correspondents killed in their duty. I have seen many movies based on heroism of several soldiers or natives surviving the conflicts. This one is the best since Lone Survivor. Very well directed depicting the horror.

I see few flaws e.g Abu Zaida speaks formal english, better if it is broken colloquial english, a Syrian woman refugee tells her agony while wiping her tearing eyes with tissue paper which supposed to be no way to get it anywhere there at the moment, she supposed to use her own sheet she uses for veil or cover from cold.

Other that, two thumbs up!

Last but not least, Rosamund Pike did really great job! Despite it really how Marie Colvin was, Pike could show all the thrill living by the edge of addicted war journalist.

As I predicted
9 March 2019
I had low expectation and voila, it is! I guess it is wrong casting for Larson to take the role. She has acting issue. Then I found out how script is not well executed. Earth is in horrible crisis and these people still have chance to joke around?

I know MCU still wants to keep an entertaining movie industry. So make a serious ones but situation sometimes is fun, just sometimes. MCU can not bring what had Thor: Ragnarok well done back on screen. Very risky. Marvel should keep the style of Iron Man, desperate superhero who struggles to relax. This would draw more appreciation.

And hey, I check the score so I am not alone getting the disappointment.

The only reason I give six stars is this is anyway a bridge to the much bigger plot of Avengers. Otherwise, would have been lower.

Hilarious
2 March 2019
It is comedy but also packed in action. If you're not person that so into Korean movies, you might experience effort to adapt with Korean accent and gesture. But after 15 minutes you would get there for no doubt. Thumbs up for all actors and director.

Somehow it touched me by one scene when original sound track from legendary A Better Tomorrow was in it. I laughed alone since I guess none of other spectators in theater aware of it.

Again, everyone is perfectly in the right place to produce this movie.
