In the past, Jamie insisted on the truth between them, but now he doesn't want Claire to reject him when she learns the truth about his life. He risks a lot. Does he tell her the truth and maybe lose her, or does he keep things to himself, at least until he is more sure she will stay? He is reluctant to tell her he is a smuggler. That he tells Claire about Willie shows he is trying to be truthful. A big unspoken question is why Claire left Bree to come to Jamie. Does he realize the sacrifice Claire and Bree are making? The revelation of Willie's existence contributes to the sense of loss while reuniting. Their child Faith didn't get a chance to live, nor was she seen by her father. When Claire sees Faith, she is not alive, and they grieve together at her grave site in France. Claire has left Bree behind, and Jamie has left Willie behind. At least Jamie gets to see Bree in pictures, but they are flat in comparison to having her there. The same is true of the picture of Willie, the son Jamie can no longer be with.
