Is Beale crazy or just enlightened?
Howard Beale in this film in my opinion is more so crazy than enlightened. He is speaking the truth that the people are looking to hear as it is his thoughts without filter. He is seen as enlightened as he is able to do what others are not willing to do because of their reputations and worry of what the public would think. Beale only is able to do this as he has become crazy off of the struggles he has faced losing his wife. Jensen is able to convince Beale with his monologue because Beale is mad enough to hear what Jensen is saying and realize the truth from it. Jensen is successful in convincing Beale about his view of the world being run by money and business not by nations and with people but by business and money. Jenson is correct as money does equal power but the the nations that people gather under give them strength through nationalism and to say money is the only force pushing the world would be incorrect. Jensen is able to convince Beale with his great persuasive speech as well as letting Beale view him similar to the God he has seen in dreams.
This film is still relevant today as many of the ideas shown are in play today. One of the relevant themes shown is how people take all their information from one source and end up disconnecting themselves from reality which in this case is due to television. Today it can be argued that what people revolve themselves is phones and the internet. Our phones and the internet we are connected to by them is our "Tube" today.
Brick (2005)
THAT WAS DECENT
I have not seen many noir films but I have definitely taken a liking to the noir type dialogue in this movie. Brendan the main character is a genius character that you can really take a liking to for his way to manoeuvre about different situations. Both him and his assistant the Brain brings you to enjoy the mystery of what happened to Emily and the lengths they go to so as to solve the mystery. The film brings up hints for you to get see more and more of whats happening through the movie bringing you to be even more intrigued throughout the movie. Combining all the aspects of great dialogue, a enjoyable main character and a mystery bring this film to be one of my favourites.
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
Sunset Blvd. Review
This movie was pulling you in right from the start. Although it was tough at times to follow all the dialogue being thrown at you the acting in it was superb. It wasn't a cliche film with a happy ending but it the film drew you in right from the start knowing it was going to end badly. The film was gripping from start to finish. The characters were hard to really like other than Betty Schaefer but that was a huge pull in when Betty was pleading with Joe near the end of the film to come with her and drop the life he had with Norma. You want him to go so badly just for you to be let down knowing what is coming right from the start of the film. This movie despite being older has kept it's kick.
The Artist (2011)
wow... I didnt expect a silent film to be that good
How a film that has so minimal use of sound could be so good i have no clue how, but this film was truly amazing. The acting and face gestures from the actors was pristine and really pulled you in to connect and enjoy the characters. the use of a silent film modern in modern day times is so ambitious yet it works so well. The way in which they incorporated sounds into the dream scene brought worked so well with the film. Also at the very end of the movie I absolutely loved how the director brought in sound just at the very end of the movie when they were filming the tap dancing scene just because it makes you appreciate how much sound changes a film. I would gladly watch this movie again just to experience it all over again.
Flatworld (1997)
Flatworld Review
Flatworld in my opinion is absolutely ingenious stop motion short film. The way in which the movie switches in and out of stop motion 2D and 3D animation is so unique and extremely entertaining to watch. Another reason I enjoy the movie is that you don't need to know a certain language to understand the film. With many of the ways they use paper to slip through doors or get crumpled up showed different possibilities in a world made of paper.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
Disaster Artist
The idea to make a movie about the production of the room, arguably one of the worst movies ever made is absolutely ingenious. With the movie the room being so bad that it becomes a comedy with all it's bad acting it seems perfect to create a movie about the creation of the room. By showing the creation of the room and what the was going on behind the scenes and how Tommy Wiseau was thinking while making the movie. It was a great idea to show the backstory of making the room since its the perfect movie to make a comedy about since it was so bad. This movie also doesn't require you to watch the room but I would definitely recommend watching the room before watching the disaster artist.
Traffic (2000)
Traffic Review
I found that this movie has aged very well from being made in 2000 and still relates well into today's world and on drugs. I think that the movie shows great relevance to what mistakes were made during the "war on drugs" and what is really needed to improve nowadays. I found it intriguing of the reasons why Michael Douglas, the father, had resigned from the job with the government. I think the reasons he did it for was because he saw that the war on drugs couldn't be won though force on the cartels and after a cartel fell a new one would take it's place. Also he didn't want to fight a war on drugs when he would be fighting with his own family in doing so. He wouldn't be able to take the pressure of having his daughter addicted to drugs and be fighting her in fighting the war on drugs. He saw that the way the the government was approaching the problem was all wrong. I also liked the changing of tone when switching between Mexico and America and I feel it really changed the mood of the scene based off of the colour change.
Get Out (2017)
get out Imdb review
Get Out is one of the best horror/thriller movies I have seen in a while. I love the balance between the horror in the movie and the momentary humor with the Rod Williams (Chris' police officer friend) and taking the edge off without taking away the horror from the movie. The way that the movie starts off with a very mysterious kidnapping and with redone by childish gambino playing at the start of the movie really sets an ere, offsetting mood to start off. The offsetting and suspenseful mood that keeps you guessing what will happen.
With the two endings created I actually liked the one that wasn't used more than the other. The one that wasn't used that ends up with Chris killing Rose at the end and having the police catch him and ends up with him in jail. the satisfaction that although Chris is locked up, he has defeated his inner demon. Although this ending is not exactly a happy one like the one used in the final movie it is more realistic and lets you have the feeling of the world not being fair.
The Shining (1980)
The Shining is a movie that has multiple layers in the story line.
I believe that Kubrick incorporated many different Easter eggs into the shining and I believe they were put there intentionally. The most obvious Easter egg seen in the movie is the Native American influence on the many native American artworks and symbols. Some of these symbols included the native American chief head on the food cans, the paintings in the hotel and the styles on the carpets. I think that Kubrick was trying to build an uneasiness about the hotel in the way of it being on a native burial ground. The theory that there was incest in the family between Dani and Jack I believe isn't very viable even with the different Easter eggs in the movie. The scene of Jack reading the playboy magazine before his interview, Dani's imaginary friend tony, and the mention of past abuse to Dani from Jack i don't think does enough to suspect incest but I do think that it makes it very likely that Dani was abused more than once unlike Jack said in the movie. I think that this movie should be considered a classic because of its many layers in the story line that make it enjoyable to watch more than once because you may catch something the next time you watch it. This is a very great movie and I definitely would recommend watching it.
Enter the Dragon (1973)
Enter the dragon is a well made action film for the time it was made.
I think that this film was definitely worth time watching even though it was an older film. Even though some of the sounds for the fighting scenes were pretty generic the action in the movie was great. It's story line was good but pretty stereotypical of a kung fu action movie but it would seem less stereotypical seeing the movie at the time when it came out. I think they killed Williams instead of roper because there was still prejudice against black people at that time and it would most likely settle better with the audience of that time having the black guy die rather than the white one. Even in many modern day movies and TV shows the black guy ends up getting killed off, such as in the walking dead. I think the film has aged pretty well since it has a good story line and the action although dated still is exciting. Although the picture and sound quality isn't up to par with most of today's movies there are some scenes in the movie that i very much liked such as the mirror room fight scene. Most kung fu films takes after many aspects of this film since it was the first of it's kind such as Kill Bill and many films featuring Jackie Chan. This movie steals a lot from James Bond even with the music that sounds extremely similar to that which is from the James Bond movie series. They also stole the much of the basic story line of James Bond films with the one bad guy and the good guy has to take him down in a spy like manner.
