The Mating Season (1951)
This is movie is worth watching and buying
This is a lost treasure, I saw it a few nights ago on TCM, and was surprise about the acting and the quality of the movie, script and direction, and for a change it is not set in New York or Los Angeles, but in Cleveland, Ohio. Gene Tierney was fantastic in this movie. I wondered aloud why Paramount Pictures have not release this movie on DVD. Gene Tierney is by far one of the most beautiful women ever in movie history. This is a newer version of screwball comedies, but with a twist, I won't spoil it for you. Here goes what I can tell you, two mother-in-laws, a newly wed couple, a rich spoil kid and a beautiful woman, got it? That is all I will say, this movie is a charm. Even if you don't like screwball comedies, Gene Tierney is worth the time, she is just great to look at, a very beautiful woman.
When Ladies Meet (1941)
The movie is worth the rental cost
I bought this movie starring Joan Crawford, Greer Garson and Robert Taylor and the earlier version starring Myrna Loy, Robert Montgomery and Ann Harding. I have to say they should have used Myrna Loy rather than Joan Crawford in the new version, because Greer Garson stole the movie. Joan Crawford spent most of the earlier part of the movie fumbling with her exotic gown, in an attempt to draw attention to the gown and the person wearing it, which of course is Joan Crawford.
If you get past Joan Crawford non-acting, and Herbert Marshall stiffness, then the movie is rather funny. Greer Garson and Robert Taylor carry this movie, if is rather funny, but I can't understand why any woman would prefer Herbert Marshall over the suave and good looking Robert Taylor. You ladies reading this review, please explain that to me. Even though I like this movie, I think the acting in earlier version was better especially Myrna Loy's acting. She is a better actress than Joan Crawford, at least in these two similar movies.
This movie is a two woman in love with the same man Herbert Marshall (Rogers Woodruff), Greer Garson (Clare) is his wife, and Joan Crawford (Mary) is his lover. Why would these two beautiful women love this stiff man, I don't know, especially when they could both have Robert Taylor. Robert Taylor (Jimmy) is Joan Crawford's (Mary) old boyfriend, who realized that Herbert Marshall (Clare's husband, Rogers Woodruff) is not in love with Mary, he just wanted to sleep with her, he warns Mary, but she don't believe him, so he introduce Mary to Clare without telling Mary that Clare is Rogers Woodruf's wife, whom he Rogers Woodruff still loves. Once Mary finds out that Rogers Woodruff was lying to her, and only using her, she stated she is ashamed of her life and ashamed for sleeping with him, she also realized that the person who really loves her and really cares for her is Jimmy, you guess it. Jimmy finally gets her girlfriend back, who ends up being his wife, who will give him the six kids he wants, or maybe only two.
Boys' Night Out (1962)
This movie is a treat to to watch, Kim Novak is great to look at.
I saw this movie on TCM, got a copy and I can't stop viewing it. This movie is set in the earlier 1960's when sexual material/theme could be discuss in movies, not like the 1930's through the 1950's where the morality codes kept husband and wife in separate beds, and kissing was limited to six seconds. I enjoy this movie about four men approaching middle age trying to spice up their "Boys' Night Out" with a 24 year old blonde, but they are mostly talk, and the blonde (Kim Novak) realized that they are all talk and played along, except she falls in love with the only bachelor (James Garner) of the group, and he also falls madly in love with her, now the fun start. He wants out, so he can be with her and to marry her, she also want him, but the three other guy have other ideas, they don't want to lose their "24 year blonde" on "Boys' Night Out". She don't want them, she want James Garner, and he want Kim Novak, you get it? I won't spoil it for you, get this movie, you won't regret it.
Strangers When We Meet (1960)
A Surprisely Good Movie
I was surfing the net and saw this movie on Ebay, decided to buy it since I could not find it in the video store. I was surprise this is a good movie, Kim Novak was fabulous, look fabulous in this movie. The love relationship between her character and the Kirk Douglas's character was flawless, stupid but yet flawless. I can't understand why a man would like his beautiful and loving wife play by Barbara Rush to have an affair with another woman, when that woman told him up front that she doesn't want to leave her husband, even though he was willing to leave his wife for her. It was obvious from the beginning, all she want was some attention that her busy husband failed to give her. You know that in the end, they will just end up hurting each other and their individual families. Any woman who would leave her husband just for sex, would do it again when the new husband becomes busy or the thrill of sneaking around becomes dull. At the end of the movie, the last scene suggest she would do it again. This is an excellent movie from two still living legend.
A Letter to Three Wives (1949)
Letters to Three Wives is worth your viewing
I love this movie, but I still can't figure out which husband left with the unseen woman. If you like comedy, drama and little mystery, you will love this movie. A young Jeanne Crain is the star of this movie, but they are some great looking ans sexy ladies in this movie, and for you ladies and a young and dashing Kirk Douglas. This movie is worth your viewing, I purchase my copy to figure out the ending of which husband left with the sexy lady who you never see, but heard. You have to figure this out for yourself, I won't tell you. I watch it again last week,Linda Darnell and Ann Sothern were striking in this movie, but I fell in love with Linda Darnell. This movie fully deserved the academy nomination and subsequent awards that it got.
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947)
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer is an excellent movie
I enjoy watching Cary Grant may a fool of himself, he will do what it takes to make a movie funny, but the star of this movie is Myrna Loy, she was in her forties, but she look like she was only in her thirties, and still sexy. he relax way of acting was wonderful to watch, never over acting, therefore she was quite believable, throw in a seventeen year old Shirly Temple, and the other supporting cast and you have a wonderful little movie. I won't spoil it for you, but I would surely recommend this movie for a enjoyable night watching movie. The funniest part of this movie is the race, I could not stop laughing, it was stupid, but rather funny. I think anyone who like Cary Grant and the lovely Myrna Loy will love this movie.
When Ladies Meet (1933)
"When Ladies Meet" was a blast to watch
I saw this movie on TCM about a week ago, I had a blast. Ann Harding and Myrna Loy was excellent in this movie. Ann Harding may have stolen the show because she had the stronger role, I guess she was a bigger star than Myrna Loy at the time. Myrna Loy did a superb job with the role she was given by her MGM bosses. I never saw Myrna Loy cried in movie before, so she cried in this movie I was take aback, I said "Man she is good", she was very believable. I won't spoil it for you, but if you can get a copy, buy it. I am looking for one myself. Robert Montgomery proved to me that he is a fine comedian and a fine actor, because he more than held his own with the likes Ann Harding and Myrna Loy, but the stars of this movie are Ann Harding and Myrna Loy. This Movie is a Classic, I can't stop watching it.
Evelyn Prentice (1934)
This movie is worth your viewing because of the star - Myrna Loy
I saw this movie last night, it kept me guessing how it will end, (which I won't spoil for you). Yes, some of the action is not plausible in today's court room drama, but for a pure entertainment value, this movie is a "9". Myrna Loy looks fabulous in this movie, but with a best friend, like her girl-friend in this movie, you don't need enemies. Your best friend should help keep you out of trouble not get you in trouble. There are a moral issues to this movie, watch out for the friends you keep, pick better friends, and it is not all greener on the outside of the street. I won't tell you anymore, I won't spoil it for you. Go to eBay or Amazon and buy this movie, you will enjoy the hour or so that you will spend watching this movie. Not as well-known as other movies starring Myrna Loy, but "Evelyn Prentice" is most definitely worth your while.
The Awful Truth (1937)
Excellent Movie, go see it
I finally got my copy on Saturday, and I have watch it about 10 times since. Irene Dunne was wonderful in this movie, especially the scene where she pretend to be his (Cary Grant) sister (they are married) and sung a trashy song in front of those high class people. Cary Grant was also wonderful, the chemistry between them was evident from beginning to end. I don't want to spoil it for you, so I won't tell you the plot or the ending, but you will laugh, smile and cry. This is by far one of the best movie Irene Dunne ever made. She deserved an Academy Award for her performance. She look great, she was so elegant. She deserve the Title "The First Lady of Hollywood". I have become an Irene Dunne fan for life, and I will sign any petition to get her an Honorary Academy Award. They were times when she just stood there in the scene and without saying a word, she was able to convey to the audience what she wanted them to feel.
