Thor: Goats & Screaming
24 July 2022
I like Marvel movies but they keep getting worse. At some point I got so bored that I pulled my phone and start playing on it.

You may have a good director, some good actors, some humor and some special effects but without a good story there cannot be a good movie.

What's Bad: Take a fairy tale/cartoonish journey narrated by Taika. Sorry, Korg. Add a lot of silly jokes and a lot of drama but fail to integrate them, don't add depth, jump quickly from one thing to another. Put some Hollywood political correctness (LGBT representation and strong woman stuff) on top and there you go.

What's Good: The goats.

And I thought Captain Marvel was bad
13 November 2021
Typical Chinese fantasy/martial arts movie. Way too long and boring, unoriginal story, poor acting, even the CGI has a few misses (bus scene).

Easily the worst Marvel movie until now.

"Without that sadness you can't taste the sweet"
10 September 2021
SF, crime movie, film noir but mostly an unusual and beautiful love story. A slow paced drama in an eerie atmosphere with solid performances from Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton. The surreal flooded landscape, the Philip Marlowe style narration and the beautiful music come together nicely. Those with bad reviews probably only have the patience to watch a Justin Bieber clip. If you are an intelligent and sensible person give it a try, you will be surprised.

Slow paced, touching, real world drama
5 July 2021
A very underrated movie. Those with negative reviews probably expected something similar to Taken or The Commuter. Fortunately it is not.

There isn't much action and shooting. The movie is rather a slow paced thriller who follows the journey of two people whose world has been ripped apart. Liam Neeson is convincing as the old soldier/farmer turned involuntary into a hero. Compared to the crappy The Ice Road that was also released in 2021, this is a solid performance for him and a movie worth watching.

The dumbest movie I've seen in a long time
4 July 2021
Starship troopers looks like an intelligent movie compared to this, even a Michael Bay movie will seem intellectual. Full of inconsistencies, lack of logic, clichés and political correctness. Bad acting, no depth of characters. Another waste of resources.

Nothing is what it seems
12 January 2021
A brilliant comedy, a brilliant view on the election mechanism, and an appeal to kindness and morality. It's not about politics, it's not taking sides, it's about honesty and normal people lives. Great script and great acting. A must see.

NOT a horror movie
1 December 2020
Usually when we hear "horror movie" we think of an "enhanced" bimbo running upstairs from a masked slash killer. I cannot stress how this is not it. The horror elements are used as a metaphor. This is in fact a heart breaking, well played, meaningful drama that reaches deep and make you empathize with the main characters. Solid performances from Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu. Great cinematography. The movie succeeds in not being a documentary like/plead for the refugees in general. Instead it makes us get attached to those two people and see how much they are more alike us than they are different, in spite of being from a different culture and distant land. Feeling down because of the Covid 19 restrictions, thinking this year in your life sucks? Go see this movie for a change of perspective...

Hidden little gem
8 August 2020
Not your typical Adam Sandler comedy and in a good way. The story is interesting, a mix of fantasy, comedy and action. No infantile gags here but a plot with a lot of twists and a character with much more depth than usual. Adam Sandler carries this movie and his performance is one of his best. The gorgeous klezmer music and beautiful cinematography help a lot with the story telling. They add a specific "flavor", atmosphere to it. The pace is not too fast and shallow but also not too slow, just about right, when you think you're getting bored, something unexpected happens. It proves, once again that the IMDB score must be used cautiously, I had little expectations due to bad reviews but this is a must see movie for Adam Sandler's fans and a sweet, beautiful movie for everyone.

A nice fantasy movie for children
20 July 2020
It's a mishmash of everything, 19th century London, Russians, fantasy creatures, and Chinese sorcerers and princesses. While the scenario is chaotic and some visuals are not so good, this is an entertaining fantasy-action movie, especially for children. Some scenes look beautiful, some fights are also cool. In conclusion, better than I expected. It goes well with nachos.

Good if you're on quarantine
13 July 2020
Horrible music played at the worst moments, without any connection to the scene. 45 minutes longer than it should have been. Bad, boring and predictable script. It's a pity because there were good performances from Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and some decent fight scenes.

The missing 2020 Oscars nominee
27 February 2020
Few can pull out a good movie while directing writing and acting in it. Edward Norton does it and his performance as the OCD/autism/Tourette challenged detective is one of his best and deserved an Oscar nomination. But hey, Oscars are not about good movies anymore but about hypocritical, fake political correctness. Alec Baldwin and William Dafoe are also great and Bruce Willis is... well, Bruce Willis. The movie starts strong but then loses momentum. Yes, as others complained it is a long movie and it has a slow pace. But this is part of its charm, it recreates that mood and atmosphere of old detective movies narrated on the first person and also of the 50's New York. If you like Fast and Furious and Justin Bieber this is probably not for you. If you like subtle things like listening to jazz you're probably going to enjoy the movie and by the way, there's a lot of fine jazz in the soundtrack. The cinematography is gorgeous, they succeeded in emulating the saturated colors and the creamy look of 35mm classic film but without the graininess. The story manages to escape the stereotypes: everything is not in black and white, no absolute truth, no ultimate good guy and ultimate villain, the hero doesn't save the world (even if Bruce Willis is in the movie). Overall, a solid, must watch movie.

Dissapointing
15 December 2019
Beautiful cinematography, great acting, bad script, one hour too long. The ending is yet another Tarantino fantasy brought to life. But while other movies tell a story in the unique and awesome Tarantino way, this one is just bad. 2.30 hours wasted.

3 hours and still not enough
8 May 2019
The biggest minus is, the movie is rushed up. Way too many things to solve and conclude even in this marathon of three hours. Some lost battle opportunities between some characters, plot holes, lazy writing and not enough explained things. But you cannot explain everything and please everybody in a superhero movie. Maybe a trilogy of 7 hours in total, instead of two movies of 5.40 cumulated would have been better. Anyway. The movie is not bad. It has some good performances, especially RDJ's one, it is emotional, it has totally unexpected turns and of course the pretty CGI. It is worth the wait and worth seeing it in cinema 3D. But don't you dare drink something before, or until the last half hour. 3h long, remember?

One of the worst Marvel movies
8 April 2019
Bad things:
  • Mediocre performance of Brie Larson in this movie, she just cannot succeed on being credible as a superhero. Chris Hemsworth, for example, even if he is not a great actor managed to give personality to its character, he has charisma and fun. You don't feel attachment or real emotion for Carol Denvers. The character has no more depth than a cartoon one. And for people who talk nonsense saying that those who do not like Brie Larson or her character are envious or insecure about a strong female hero, I liked Wonder Woman, it was a much better and emotional performance.

  • Inconsistencies in power/fights and some really ridiculous scene that shows how Fury lost its eye. Plot holes, no depth and emotion, not enough explaining and continuity, in conclusion, lazy writing and bad directing, cartoonish, good for kids of twelve.

  • Explicit, annoying, in you face political correctness. Kind of the one you see in Black Panther.

  • Much overrated by fake reviewers, just as Black Panther was. However, even Black Panther was a better movie.

  • Too long and boring from time to time

Good things:
  • Good performances of Annette Bening, Jude Law, Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn
  • Good tunes from the 90's
  • Pretty CGI
  • The cat.

Better than expected
10 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
When I heard the name and concept of the movie (it's about big cities on wheels) I thought wtf, what a stupid idea and wasted talent and money on CGI. However I found the movie to be pretty entertaining. The good parts:
  • as everyone else mentioned in their reviews: the visuals/CGI. Beautiful scenery and sets, vibrant colors, spectaculars battles, very good cinematography
  • very dynamic. There is almost non stop action and anticipation. No bathroom time.
  • strong performance of Hugo Weaving
  • strong performance of Stephen Lang and CGI team for Shrike character

Now, if you think of the movie as a modern fairy tale for children and teenagers than it is more than ok. If you expect more... Well, here are the bad things:
  • the concept itself lacks any logic. After a world war destroys the advanced stage of evolution the humanity have reached, the remaining humans build huge mobile islands on land that move on tracks or wheels or legs to scavenge... something. While others build a great city defended by a wall.
  • as others have mentioned, the movie tries to fit a lot of things from the books in two hours and it fails. The characters have no depth, no complexity and there is no real emotional attachment to them
  • too much resemblance to Mad Max
  • there are no big names involved except for Hugo Weaving and of course Peter Jackson as a writer
  • the plot is predictable, with holes and its main purpose is to justify the action and special effects. Annoying cliches both in characters, lines and story (the wise old Asian, the warrior girl, etc). Oh and yeah, SPOILER ALERT there is a genuine "I am your father" moment...

However the movie manages to entertain. It is a pity it was a box office flop. Probably because of the concept itself which is hard to sell, the lack of efficient marketing, the bad critic reviews and mostly the lack of big names that would draw interest. Not to mention the competition with other movies launched in the same period such as Aquaman.

Conclusion: you will not regret seeing the movie if you want to see a visually stunning modern fairy tale. But don't expect Lord of The Rings.

A dull movie
3 March 2019
Yet another attempt to squeeze more money out of the franchise. The visuals are dull, the story is also dull. You would expect a good movie with Ron Howard directing and with such names as Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Paul Bethany or Thandie Newton but no. It is just an average action movie and despite their history you do not feel attached to the characters. At least you think, there must be some good CGI? For some reason, most of the movie is dark, I mean the image is dark-gray. There just isn't enough light to see what is happening in most of the the action scenes. So, another boring disappointment from the Star Wars franchise. What else? Oh, yeah, political correctness with... robots.

Good action movie but nothing more
14 February 2019
Decent acting, gorgeous costumes, gorgeous landscapes. The story is average and predictable. It is a good action movie but not the best Marvel movie. I deserves an Oscar for costumes but that's it. The Oscar nomination for best picture is a joke. Slumdog Millionaire that received an Oscar for political reasons was a far better movie than this one. I am a Marvel fan but this movie is much overrated by critics.

Mother! (2017)

Brilliant! though, not for everyone
10 July 2018
A lot of people with low intelligence keep calling mother! a horror movie. While the art of tension building is is one of the best I have seen, up to the point you physically need to escape from watching, the movie is much more than a thriller/horror movie. Nothing is what it seems, everything is a metaphor for something. mother! is a disturbing movie indeed, hard to watch and even harder to forget. Some scenes are horrifying but... you must NOT forget that EVERYTHING is about symbolism. The filming technique and the sound do their job in unnerving the viewer. As for the cast... the names speak from themselves. Great performance. What makes good art? Hard to tell but most agree that true art touches and affects you. One can believe anything about this movie but cannot deny it has an effect on you. Once you have seen it, you will not be able to unseen it.

Better than the first one
21 March 2018
Usually most sequels are worse then the original. Not this one.

While Hugh Grant and the other actors are more than fine, the merit comes to the graphic artists. The quality of the animation is noticeably better. Fur looks like real fur, movements are fluid and natural. But, in these days, CGI artists must also act. Their computer generated characters must have the expressivity of a real actor, they must convey emotions. And this is where the movie excels. We have a bear that looks exactly like a real bear. Except it talks. And really touches us. Like a human being. Looking like a bear. A human bear. But still a bear who... you get the idea.

The movie has good humor while abstaining to get too cartoonish. A great treat for kids and for the whole family.

Superb cinematography
16 March 2018
I have heard and red negative comments before seeing the movie and I prepared for worse. Instead, it was a pleasant surprise. Most of the people who gave negative reviews addressed the "version" of Poirot which is not faithful to the book, the pace of the movie which is too slow, the other great actors who could not develop their characters. There is also great nostalgia in comparing it with the "perfect" Sidney Lumet version. I will not argue on this issue, I will say only one thing: get over it people!. Get a life! It's not the Bible, it's just a book which has been translated into a movie. There is no "perfect" version in art. I mean look at the Guy Ritchie version of Sherlock Holmes. Nothing could get further from the books. But I like it as well as I like the Granada series which is so brilliant and accurate to the books.

I say the movie must be watched at least once for the visuals. The cinematography is fantastic. The colors, camera angles, costumes, sets, landscape, the atmosphere are just gorgeous. One can say anything about this movie but cannot deny it is very good looking one. Go see the movie and feast your eyes. You will not regret it.
