Marriage Story (2019)
This had potential...
Wow, this movie had so many possibilities to become a moving but relatable story. What a shame. I give it three stars due to the acting of Adam Driver. Although this wasn't his best performance, not even close, I do feel like he played a grounded role-a catalyst to the plot. However, the rest of the acting, in my opinion was simply atrocious. Scarlet Johansson had her moments within scenes where I felt she had shined but for the most part, I felt a disconnect to her character and never felt like her emotion successfully penetrated anyone. As for the rest of the cast, I was shocked at how corny and pretentious everyone was.
I don't know if this was caused from a faulty script or just poor acting entirely, but quite frankly, i was highly disappointed. The lawyer sought out by driver towards the beginning was the biggest cliche of the entire film. Tacky, rude, and extremely over the top. Don't even get me started on Julie Hagerty's performance.
What a let down for such a well selected cast. I found a more meaningful side story of a repaired marriage in Jon Favreau's Chef.
What the Health (2017)
One-sided...Spoiler...it has its agenda...
I can not believe the audacity those involved in this documentary have to spew partial truths and push propaganda so hard as if someone wouldn't take notice to their agenda to support vegan eating. This is garbage. "Sugar doesn't cause diabetes". Hmmm I noticed there was not any references to how the liver comes to play in the digestion of food and how that gets effected by sugar. Come on. Waste of time...
The End of the Tour (2015)
Another review written on the toilet...
I only leave reviews while on the toilet because that means that what I had recently viewed was truly captivating to the degree I ignore urges to use the restroom until after the credits appear.
To be honest, I wasn't caught off guard or pleasantly surprised. This movie has been highly recommended by everyone I've talked to about it so I actually expected what I saw but I can state now that I was moved in other ways than what I expected. I felt like through the dialogue spoken in the film, there was a underlying reassurance that humanity is extremely independent and personal to what is encouraged or observed as. I was reminded what it feels like to long to be accepted or wanted but simultaneously being taught through Dave foster that pretentiousness only fuels more of that empty thirst that is never quenched. I was also taught about how difficult it can be to know who you are and what you're comfortable with instead of depending on the world to lay it out for you. I was left with swirling thoughts and a drive to remain reminded, so to speak, about how important it is to not allow everything around you bombard your inner understanding of who you are. Overall, the movie was delivered so beautifully but yet, so raw to the point that I felt I was with these two men, listening in on their continual discussion. I can tell that Segal put his soul into this film and provided all of us with a passionate portrayal of a type of human being that we all keep locked within ourself, a part of us that deserves more attention and freedom to exist. Bravo to everyone involved in the production of this film.
Historical Roasts (2019)
Terrible...
I'm not one of those who leaves the review because I was "offended". Everything can be made fun of in my opinion if done right but I couldn't even get through 10 minutes of this garbage. It is so poorly made and juvenile. Whoever thought it would be at good idea to roast dead historical figures is bat s-- crazy. It's a stupid concept to begin with and the jokes are terribly written. The jokes were made for those who actually care enough to even have a basic idea of what history surrounding the figure was about and if that's the audience you are trying to reach then you're out of luck because you have then stuck an audience that has an intellect and higher IQ than that of a toddler. I feel like I was thrown into a time capsule, being brought back to when Tosh.0 and family guy was popular. However, I will give family guy at least some respect for breaking ground with content suitable for television but still...terrible idea and terrible content...
Undercover (2019)
Very addicting...yet VERY Predictable...
I loved this series as it started. I felt hooked from the very first episode but unfortunately, as the series began to carry on, it was like I was able to predict every single moment as if I've seen a version of this story at least a dozen times. I did enjoy the acting and the English audio was fantastic. The difference from the original was so subtle I could barely notice.
The Act (2019)
Blown Away....
Where do I even begin...
The cinematography was phenomenal. From the very first scene until the last seconds of this series, I was frightened, disturbed, and on complete edge due to the flawless filming techniques orchestrated. Every scene would raise your blood pressure, and keep you at the edge of your seat. An example of this is when Gypsy tip-toes to the kitchen to sneak whipped cream from the fridge. The directors knew how to take any given moment and electrify it to its max capacity. Whether the scene included gypsy eating junk food or being tied up to the bedpost by her mother, you felt a dark but appropriate dread.
The music was another superb element to the show. It seemed like every moment was matched with the perfect track/piece. The soundtrack was killer and locked me in as soon as I heard the first notes played by Fleetwood Mac. The music fit the theme and left you uneasy and simply terrified throughout.
To conclude, the acting was fantastic. Patricia Arquette couldn't have played a better role in her entire career, surpassing even her great performance as the mother in Boyhood. Her performance was so spot on and evil that I was left, suffering from my own bit of Stockholm Syndrome. The bipolar characteristics portrayed by Patricia forced me to love her and hate her every five minutes. Joey King couldn't have been more spot on with her character, capturing every expression naturally, allowing you to believe that you could possibly relate to gypsy's lifestyle. Very honest and believable.
Overall, this show blew me away. It was not simply another non-fiction crime drama produced by lifetime but a dark, artistic masterpiece built around one of America's most chilling stories of the decade.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
SOA could have been the full package....
Starting on a positive note. SOA, I feel, has an amazing cast , especially the roles played by Katy Sagel , Maggie Siff, Charlie Hunam, and Tommy Flannagen. Not including Hunam, theses actors have not played big roles before this series. The emotional investment and dedication towards their roles makes the audience believe them, hate them, and love them at the same time, until seasons 5. Then the plot takes an ugly turn, not bra cause of the endless torture scenes, the massacres, and the countless head shots committed by the club, but because of the motive. Up until season 5, despite the brutal murders consistently committed by Jax Teller (Hunam), you began n to root for him because of his drive to bring the SOA out of gun running and drug dealing. (Spoiler) this results in him eventually killing his own dad in order to put his club and family in a better direction. Nevertheless, (spoiler #2) when Gema (Sagel) brutally murders Tara, Jax's wife, and covers up her act, jax goes off the handle of sanity, as he literally sabatages every single thing that he has taught so long to build. He severes ties with every affiliation, and loses many close to him as a result, (spoiler) ultimately discovering that his vengeance for blood is misdirected and assumed because of the truth being his mother who killed Tara. You actually begin to resent the main character that you loved prior. He uses little motive to ruin everything. I feel that if it weren't for a ridiculous, unrealistic, and depressing (in all the wrong ways) ending to the 7 season series, I would have rated this a fat 10/10. I walk away glad that I watched it because the side elements and cast being the best I have ever seen in a TV series but I'm left with a sour taste in my mouth for how everything ends.
