As Dusk Falls (2022)
Must Play!
"As Dusk Falls" is a moving and emotional masterpiece. The voice acting ranges from solid to excellent and is always believable, and the story is a film-quality narrative. Do your self a favor and get lost in this artfully-crafted labor of love.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
The Best Animated TV Show Since "The Last Airbender"
I'll keep it brief and spoiler-free: "Arcane" is a masterpiece form top to bottom. You are doing yourself a massive disservice if you choose not to watch it. Whatever you are thinking about binging next, toss it to the side and make season 1 your top priority. This show is adult animation at its finest, and is on the same par as "Invincible," which is about the highest complement that can be paid to a televised work. Can't wait for season 2!!!
The Unforgivable (2021)
Director Nora Fingshceidt and Actress Sandra Bullock deserve Oscars for this...
This film is simply excellent from beginning to end. Proof yet again of Netflix's increasing quality of original content, The Unforgivable is an engrossing, moving, and brutally realistic take on the lives of ex-cons. Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis steal the show, though performances remain strong across the board. This crime drama is beautifully shot and bursting at the seems with clever visual symbolism relating to family dynamics and gender politics. Better still, it is unabashedly led by incredible women behind the camera as well as in front of it. Despite some problems with pacing in the third act, I can say confidently that I still enjoyed the viewing experience, and that whatever minor nitpicks I have do not take away from the subversive excellence of the project overall. Bravo!
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Disappointed, but definitely not surprised
I am not an edge lord or a hate-monger; if you like this film, that is entirely your business, and I encourage you to watch it for yourself and form your own opinion. The latest outing in the Matrix saga simply wasn't for me. The film is laden with heavy-handed ideas expressed poorly as part of a tedious and over-long narrative. Poor writing and cringe-inducing attempts at invoking nostalgia compound the existing problems, and even the Reeves-Moss team up will not leave you smiling after 2+ hours of confusion and frustration. Do as you wish, but I can't recommend this one. Better luck next time, I suppose.
