Twisters (2024)
Popcorn cinema, but with a lot of lacks
First of all, I did not see the first movie Twister and therefore I have no comparison- but I would imagine, that can only make this movie better.
It is an action movie and I can enjoy this genre, although you typically need to ignore some logical plot holes.
Anyway, the main idea and the driver for the main character I found so interesting, that I wondered if that would be possible. I may be physical nonsense, but I like it when I am in the cinema I start wondering- that is a big plus.
Now, the downsides. The movie is too long and draggy- it could use a cut that has 15-30 minutes less runtime, which could add a better pace. But what really got on my nerves was the rivalry between the two teams, because there is absolutely no point given why this is. The one teams wants to gain more physical facts about the tornadoes, and the others to risky live streams. There is now reason why this would be conflicting the other team and absolutely no point in why would one team try to bring the other team of the road. It felt like no one thought of bringing this in the movie.
And the the argument about the investors, which led Kate to switch teams. I felt, like it was cut to the half and the viewers are just let to believe, that Kate has her reasons. Very strange.
Overall better then I expected, but there are a few lacks in the plot, although the film feels too long.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
I like this movie, although it was the "worst" of the franchise
So, I tend to write critics about movies I disliked. This isn't the case here- at least not totally. First of all, I liked the movie, I enjoyed watching it in the cinema. I just felt, there is some potential left. The cast is great, effects are superb and the story is good and solid. If that movie is missing something it is probably some drive- and this time I don't mean to cut runtime- but I felt slow.
The only thing that's really missing is FUN. Everything feels nice and familiar, but this is the least fun movie in the franchise. There is one joke- and that is given away in the trailer. (I am ignoring the stolen joke from the Big Bang Theory- which is funny but not new). The rest isn't that funny to qualify as jokes. I like that the movie is doing what is expected by the fans, but still, whitin that you can bring something funny and unexpected.
Argylle (2024)
Overall mediocre
Well, it was pretty much what I expected after the trailer.
Basically this a mix of various films: the build-up is Lost City, major plot points are taken from the Mission Impossible franchise- all mixed with the roughness of Kingsman and Bullet Train. That's it! And that would be ok, not everything needs to be unique and completely new to be good entertainment.
BUT although having a great cast, this movie won't work. It never gets very funny or builds up real tension- not even with many twists. That is something to achieve- sadly.
Still it is a movie you can watch, but don't have to see. It is mediocre- sounds hard it is the best description. If you haven't seen any of the mentioned movies it might be a bit better, but for the frequent movie goer like me, it was a bit disappointing.
To close with the biggest down point- the effects are miserable. Especially in the first car chase scene everything looks like a cheap computer trick the can be better since the last 20 years. This is an Apple Movie in 2024. I mean, driving a strange convertible car down over the roofs of Greek houses and the actor sits in it like playing a scene on the sofa for his family- this is badly animated and executed. As Apple I would not want to have that in my lineup. Sure, it's not Apple themselves who is responsible for the effects, but if they order or produce the movie, they should not want to be related to such poor quality. And besides everything else, this is without any discussion something that can be done better- way better.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Unfunny and somewhat disgusting
For me the film was meaningless, nothing makes sense. It's sad, not funny and the scenes with the cut fingers are disgusting- and it does nothing to support the story to show it that detailed, that was just repulsive.
I had some hopes for that movie, but still was highly disappointed. The main actors and the team from In Burgess let me hoping to see a strange dramedy. But, a bit but, just to make the characters strange doesn't make it funny, and also, it is not art because it makes no sense. The whole film is sequence of nonsensical actions by the two main characters, which are escalating, but in the end are useless. In the end the only thing that changed is that the sister moved away- so what?
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Self Control (2017)
Re-watched it the third time and still love it
It's n overall great episode, but I the scene of Fitz and Simmons in the shop is brilliant. Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker make that feel very intense. A superb completion of the LMD phase and the series on it's peak (although I never disliked anything.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Solid sequel
A good sequel, good action, but the first one was funnier. I like the setting and Tom Hardy and Woody Harilson are doing a great acting as well. That's all!
Formula 1: Drive to Survive: No Regrets (2021)
Perfect example in everything this show lacks
Every time I try to go on with watching the show, I stop after one episode. I had a pause of 10 months between watching episode 7 and 8 of season 3- and after finally watching it I knew why. It is so weird how they juggle around with the facts to create drama. It's a more a mockumantary then a documentary. As a Formula one fan, who watches every race, I am really getting angry. They are leaving things out, telling stories without a continuous timeline and concentrate on everything negative.
I would love if they change the concept to a true documentary and bring in the real race tension. Whenever you see parts of races, you cannot follow what's going on, because you just see cars driving- no lap or positions are showing.
I'm sorry, but I don't think the producers are interested in the actual Formula one, but more in producing a soap opera.
We all know colleagues that are constantly talking about others and spreading rumors out of the littlest things. That's the stele of this show.
House of Gucci (2021)
Brillant cast, boring story
...not very much more to say. It's a biopic of course, but the trailer gives away the whole story. Then you have to sit for hours in the cinema while you are just annoyed by how poorly the characters behave and no tension arises. Having a lot of renown and brilliant playing actors cannot make up for a to stretched storyline. I think it need to be cut by at least an hour.
The Simpsons: I, Carumbus (2020)
Hitting new lows
Normally I like the history or movie episodes, although they might not be so creative, but they typically find a funny twist.
This time I really enjoyed nothing about it. It wasn't creative nor funny. I hate to say, but I even found it a bit discussing.
I wonder if someone want to kill the show, because it feels like they didn't want to create anything enjoyable.
Eternals (2021)
Good, solide movie- just a bit too slow
In general I liked the serious tone of the movie. It's a good movie to start a new phase in the MCU, but probably we all are inpatient to wer this all will be build up, resulting in an unfair unsatisfactory with current releases, but I give them credit, that in retrospective this will feel different.
On its own, I felt that the movie could be a bit faster. Especially in the beginning I felt too slow, without building a good tension with that. I think, one of the first films of this should not be the second longest in the MCU, but I found that out after seeing it- what perfectly matched my experience.
Overall, a good movie to watch, not only for marvel fans.
Generation Beziehungsunfähig (2021)
Nice idea, not overwhelming new
The basic idea of the movie is good, but nothing we never saw before, just brought into a modern setting. Some nice jokes, but few too little. The key problem of the movie is a highly unsympathetic female lead character. You never really get the feeling that you want the two main characters to get together, because there is so little that makes her likable. I'm not sure if it might be the female actor as well. The male lead instead is very likable which brings a big disbalance. But overall it is a typical problem with current German movies, having annoying characters to be more realistic.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Super overrated
I thought the Snyder/Whedon Justice League was the best DC movie since the Nolan Batman Trilogie. Don't know why some wanted a Snyder Cut, but I gave it a try. This version stands for everything that's wrong with the current DC movies: just making it dark and looooooonnng is just not enough. This movie changed some, added few, but told everything in slow motion. Watching the Flash constantly in slo-mo got me angry. That's not art, that's nonsense. Only plus point is that Barry Allen is still fun to watch. I still like to watch Ben Affleck as Batman, but it's a pity that he was it in such poor movies.
Putting that movie in a 4:3 ratio just to mark it as the Snyder cut is ridiculous!
Vivarium (2019)
Good Idea, BUT...
Why not complete the story. Open endings can be cool, but they rarely are. The pieces of the puzzle are all there, why not answer everything? I could easily fill in the missing components, but leaving me with that is just not satisfying.
I appreciate the length of the film and that not every movie has to be 2 hours or longer today, but still, there is such so little story that was told. Keep the length, put in the resolution where clearly somebody was thinking of and you have a good movie. Leaving it out does not make it artful, it lowers the quality. The film has good actors with very little text and good visuals. It just has the potential for more.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Completely misses the coolness of the 2 movies before
I'm a big fan of the 2 movies by McG and the big line up of star actors. Although I can appreciate a good reboot, this one was a disappointment. The lead actors are sympathetic, but just don't have the appearance for a big movie. The story isn't a big surprise, but some say the stories of the previous films might be mediocre too.
This film really lacks in coolness. What I liked about the others was the actors and that story was told like in series of many music clips, which made the movies so special.
Marie Brand: Marie Brand und der schwarze Tag (2018)
Good Idea, but out of line with the overall franchise
Like all of the stories by the same author, it is way too aggressive and doesn't have the ease of many other episodes. The plot itself is a good idea but the characters act inconsistent to the overall plot.
Ad Astra (2019)
Long, long trip...
To self-discovery. Visually attractive movie, with a rather uncreative story and a huge anti-climax. The sci-fi setting is nice, but it is not really key for the movie.
It was very disappointing and you could say it is a good base to put in more. This is only true because the story is so minimal, that you could add everything. Actually that is proven within the movie itself- when the spaceship needs to stop for a sos signal. To avoid to many spoilers, I stay cryptic: what happens then is the biggest suspense scene, but is almost irrelevant to the overall plot. Even the one consequence out of that doesn't influence the rest of the story.
Sorry to be so negative. I was really looking forward to a new sci-fi movie that is not a franchise.
A Star Is Born (2018)
The ohne cool think about this Film is Lady Gaga
I hate to be so negative about this film, but actually I think this is so overrated. This is probably because everyone focuses on Lady Gaga the first time as an actor in a big movie. Her performance is good, yes, but I think, we all expected that. But anyway, fairly said, she is the highlight of the film, but only a mediocre one. The story isn't surprisingly new, what is no wonder for a re-re-re-make. Bradley Cooper is perfomaning well, as always, but his role stays very one-dimensional. Him directing as well surprised me though. The movie has no dynamic, as a viewer you don't no where it's heading, and the only music is on-stage which is slowing everything down even more. I'm sorry to say, but one of the films I regret seeing in 2018.
