War Horse (2011)
Destined to Takes it's Place Amongst the Classics
Steven Spielberg has outdone himself with "War Horse".
With its "Technicolor" feel, for a moment, I thought I was watching one of the greats from the "Golden Age"; something along the lines of Cecille B. Demille's classic, "The Ten Commandments", or Victor Fleming's - "Gone with the Wind"; both of which, "War Horse" deserves to take its place amongst; and for all the same reasons.
This film is cinematic genius; completely devoid of the mind numbing sex, gore, profanity, violence and reliance on special effects, that seems to have replaced true creativity and originality in todays film industry.
A "Must See" for ALL.
Chicago Massacre: Richard Speck (2007)
Somewhat enjoyable
Despite the obvious fact that this movie was filmed on a budget, I continued to watch it beyond this realization; for the acting was par; the overall ambiance created was effective and the vivid accounts of Specks heinous crimes were jaw dropping; however, two small details within one scene were inexcusably overlooked...The present day Fax machine and desktop computer that were on the desk behind the clerk at the hotel where Speck was staying. It's supposed to be 1966; and even if on a budget, I imagine it wouldn't have taken much effort to either conceal those items, or remove them completely; and after all, how could they have gone unnoticed. I consider this downright sloppy; for when a film such as the docudrama that this could be considered to be, if it's not historically accurate in every detail, then it's hard to "get lost in the moment". Especially considering that the best thing this film, in my opinion, had going for it- was it's "ambience"...this strongly detracted from that.
In a Dark Place (2006)
In A Dark Place (is where most sleep)
The only time I read reviews is when either the graphics on the cover, or the title of the movie is an indicator as to its quality or entertainment value, and I want my suspicions either confirmed or assuaged. With that having been said... I liked the cover; one that lends credence to the adage that, a book (or in this case... a movie,) cannot be judged by it. Now seeing as how I couldn't view another minute beyond that which I did watch, I'll only assess that which kept me watching as long as I did. The acting was good; as was the cinematography. These two factors in of themselves, found me waiting for something climactic to occur; but who knows, maybe I didn't wait long enough. What I do know is this...There are plenty of movies out there, that will captivate you from the onset and this wasn't one of them. If you're having trouble sleeping...watch this movie. 1 half hour should do it. Warning: You should not attempt to operate machinery or drive a vehicle while this movie is playing.
