War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Cry every time
My favourite film ever that ends my favourite trilogy ever. I've seen it 3 times in the past 3 years.
I cried the last time I watched it and the time before. Most importantly, I cried the first time. I cried in the cinema lobby. I cried in the toilets. I cried on the way home. I cried while scoffing down chips and cried myself to sleep.
Watch this film for the love of God. It was the first time I cried in the cinema and the only time I've ever cried that much. If someone (me) can have such a connection to Caesar than this is a film worth watching for everyone.
Superman Returns (2006)
Is it as bad as they say?
I don't usually write film reviews but I just had to for this gorgeous spectacle of a film. For 14 years people have been comparing this beautiful film to explosive diarrhoea at 3AM (well, perhaps not that bad). The general consensus from what I've seen is that Superman Returns is fine, mediocre and whatever there is in between. Well, I didn't watch it in 2006, I watched it in 2020 after Man of Steel and the God awful, Batman V Superman. Am I saying Superman Returns is better than these films? Certainly. Am I saying it is the best film of all time? No. Am I saying it is one of the best Superhero films? Yes (here me out). Superman Returns is beautiful. It has a cohesive story which to a degree, follows the heroes journey and is endearing the whole way through. Firstly, Superman returns (2 drums and a symbol fall of a hillside) from a trip to visit his dead home planet after 5 years and now everything has changed. That's the premise at its very basics and that is a genius idea. Now Superman, the person the viewer is supposed to look up to has to find his place in the world all over again. His girlfriend is married who he gave up his powers for in Superman 2. He loved Lois and now he's with another man. In a word: he's heartbroken but still has HOPE that Lois will fall back in love with him. In fact, we HOPE for that as an audience. Then Superman restored HOPE for the world after the planet has been at threat for 5 years when he saves the plane Lois was in Superman. With this Superman feels hopeful again. After flying with Lois though, Superman realises he can't win her over so he focused on trying to stop Lex. Lex is a menacing presence who wants revenge for putting him in prison. This is not necessarily a good reason why he wants to kill superman but the first films got away with him simply being a criminal mastermind so I don't see this as a problem. Lex threatens Metropolis with the Earthquake machine so Superman goes to stop it and he loses. He loses HOPE but Lois saves him and he regains this HOPE. At this point, the viewer expects Superman to stop Lex after losing, kiss Lois and smile for the camera. There is stakes by this point - there are consequences for every action each character makes. You expect superman to win. But he doesn't as the film subverts the viewer's expectations. Superman dies saving Metropolis and it doesn't feel like a victory-HOPE is lost for Metropolis' citizens. When Superman returns (2 drums and a symbol fall of a hillside) you expect him to be proud of his victory and WIN. Instead he takes a solemn moment with his son and flies away into the sun rise. Beautiful - what a wonderful character study of Superman and the HOPE he inspires.he Some may argue that there is no action and that makes the film lame but there never was in the original Superman film. Returns focuses on how Superman saves people and how Clark Kent deals with how the world has changed. That's important for the film and the key theme of HOPE. Other key point I have:
- This film features the best on-screen Jimmy Olsen ever IMO as he really captures the spirit of his comic counterpart.
Yogi Bear (2010)
The absolute pinnacle of entertainment!
You honestly can't get any better than this! Easily the best film of the decade, perhaps even the century thus far! With the wittiest and most comically funny humour that is so funny it can only rival the classic Minions films! If you're a fat loser living in their mom's basement, you'll sure to love this one! With cgi on par with War for the Planet of the apes(2017) and the best green screen put to a...screen, you can't miss it! The Roadrunner short before it is terrible though so...maybe,just skip that...
