Disclosure (1994)
I can't believe I'm just now seeing this movie
This movie is riveting! I can't understand why I haven't heard of this movie, especially since it's a Michael Crichton story. My guess is bc it's not politically correct. Crichton himself supposedly believed that sexual harassment would be just as bad when sexual equality was reached in the workplace. This movie has everything that his stories are known for; emerging technology, strong plot with some twists and a few morales to go along with the themes. I really think Crichton was ahead of his time and he had no problem with going against the grain.
My last personal fav thing is that I haven't found a movie with a good, strong female lead in a long time. But I really admire Michael Douglas's wife in this movie.
Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (2019)
I've watched this about four times total
As a general rule I don't care for documentaries as I think they're an easy way for a director to appear unbiased while simultaneously not telling all the facts. From what I could see they allowed victims, defense attorneys, LE, childhood acquaintances and his interviewers give their version of what happened. They also show a lot of what he said during his interviews. The documentary aligns with a lot of the books I've read on him (one more reason to think that it's not bs'ing the audience) while giving the viewer material never seen before. It also doesn't become repetitive (another characteristic of documentaries that I can't stand). Having lived in Gainesville most of my life it's interesting to see familiar places and hear a lot of the local accounts of what happened. It made it feel more personal.
Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes (2022)
Good but not as good as the T. Bundy version
Pretty biased with lots of speculation and not enough facts. Good way to stir up even more racial strife. For instance, there was a reporter saying Dahmer knew he could get away with his crimes bc "he was white" and his victims were minorities (explain the white victims then, please). Dahmer himself was very remorseful and honest about his crimes but never once admitted to him being a racist. This guy also had 17 victims and they really only got into a few of their deaths. They just kept emphasizing that they were black. If the makers of this documentary were so interested in honoring these victims why couldn't they take the time to delve into the rest of the victims and their deaths? Also, not enough police interviews to determine what was going thru their minds when their inactions led to more ppl dying (example, when the two officers didn't arrest him despite one of his victims running out of his apartment in a horrible state and needing help). Not saying the man wasn't a homophobe racist but not enough facts and not enough interviews of law enforcement for this to be a responsible documentary.
This also jumped around too much chronologically to the point it was difficult to keep the timeline straight.
I like that they showed what a lonely man he was. That was actually something useful as it points out what awful things ppl are capable of when they feel alone.
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
One of the best new movies I've seen in a long time
I almost didn't watch this bc I saw the trailer and it was one of those trailers that doesn't invite you to watch the movie bc you think you already know the entire plot. One of my biggest pet peeves. I was wrong. It has several twists that are so good and I certainly did not see them coming. I thought the acting was really good, too. Even when the movie begins to show flashbacks and you already know what's going to happen you still get nervous for the characters which, to me, is a sign that you are invested in the plot and characters.
World War Z (2013)
Best blend of horror/action/overcoming the odds/military movie I've seen
To start off, and from what I understand, this movie is nothing like the book so buyer beware. Just enjoy the movie separate and apart from the book.
One thing I really admire about this movie is not the movie itself but the trailer. Trailers are a dying art. If they're not giving away too much of the plot they're so confusing that you know less about the movie after watching the trailer than you did before. I watched the trailer, thought it was a "Contagion" type plot and rented it. I was so surprised 10 minutes into it to find not only was it a viral outbreak movie but that it is a zombie flick! I love the horror genre and find "horror" movies that are just gory/overtly sexual just plain laziness on the part of the screenplay. This movie is not like that. The terror isn't fake and it doesn't rely on cheap thrills, sexuality or CGI to entice the audience.
It is also hard to find a movie that isn't preachy. No matter your political persuasion this movie is enjoyable.
The hallmark of a great movie is it's ability to make you want to watch it over and over again. Such is the case with this movie. And every time I watch it I always catch myself saying "Wow! I didn't notice that before!" There are hidden gems in the plot that are important BUT you can still enjoy the movie without catching every little detail. All in all you can watch this whether viewing it in a chatty, large group setting or you're hanging onto every detail.
The movie also mixes true history into it's plot so it contains aspects that any history/military buff can appreciate. Definitely also makes it seem more real!
Lastly, one thing I can't stand in movies is fear mongering. I really don't need Hollywood elites that are unaffected by reality to tell me what the next crisis will be. Apocalypse movies are notorious for producing fear porn. Not this movie. It's just a movie. It's inspiring but it's not going to make it's audience want to go out and build a bunker in the mountains of Montana.
Give this movie a chance. Even if you don't enjoy it as much as I did it will certainly not be a huge waste of time.
Alone (2020)
This was definitely worth a watch!
With all the crap that has passed for supposed great movie watching I don't get why this got bad reviews. The suspense was there. It had a cute little love story that didn't require gratuitous sex scenes and their relationship really made you root for them. It wasn't just all about the fear factors from the zombies but you saw how lonely the characters were and it showed ppl's humanity and desire for human contact (and I am guessing ppl can identify with that right now). They directory obviously wanted to show off Tyler Posey's body a little and that got a little cheesy. But, again, sexuality was not over the top in this film.
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Really good, intense
It seems to me the reviewers giving this movie a poor rating don't even care for the franchise. Like a lot of James Wan movies there is a back story that ties in incredibly well to the other movies. It is about as scary as the others. My husband thought it was done very similarly to the third installment. My favorite is the second one and this is my second favorite in terms of story and fear factor so that will hopefully be helpful to those who are trying to decide on seeing it or not.
