Swingtown (2008)
Keeps getting better and better
I've been watching this show from the start being from Chicago and the writer being a friend of friends and as much as I liked it in the beginning, I am looooovvving it now. It was provocative and unique out of the gate, but now the characters are developing, relationships are growing and the writing has really taken off. The most recent episode "Swingus Interruptus" was hysterical and right on. I even love the sweet story lines of the two youngest kids as they are about the age I would have been then. The clothing, cars, music, decor and even the facial hair will bring you back, but the story lines and character development will have you feeling invested in the show. Give this one a chance and keep it from getting cancelled. They can't all be crime or reality shows!!!
As for NANCY26 who commented that this show is not a realistic portrayal of Chicago's north shore in the 70s...this world did exist even there. You just weren't a part of it. In fact, in a sociology class at Notre Dame they discuss Chicago's north shore in depth while covering the phenomenon of swinging during this era. One never knows what goes on behind a neighbor's curtain especially when the kids are in bed by 9pm!
Dan in Real Life (2007)
Terrible Trite Movie
This movies is so tragically flawed...from the contrived cutesy family, to the cloying situations the main characters repeatedly find themselves in to the lack of like-ability of the main characters. Steve Carell's Dan is immature and his obvious affection borders on stalker (at what point does shyness become social inaptitude--how is this man function in normal society?) and Juliette Binoche's Marie is manipulative and coy. Blech! There's absolutely no reason to think that these two belong together. The daughters are an unfortunate story gimmick to try an show the audience how Dan doesn't take his own advice, but they are really just an annoying addition. Don't waste your time--this is a trite romantic comedy in indie costume.
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
baaaaaaaaaddddddaaaaaaasssssss!!!
Take an Atavan before seeing this movie as Bourne Ultimatum will have you squirming, clenching, cheering and jeering from start to finish. Matt Damon is delicious. Much better use of many of the actors from previous Bourne movies. V. thought provoking and timely story. From the locations to the excellent support acting (hello Paddy Considine? brilliant!) to the looping storyline to the tight editing (only 111 min.) this movie is nearly flawless. Brett Ratner, Jerry Bruckheimer and all the other irrelevant action directors out there should take notes. This is how you make a movie! Please, please, please make a fourth!
