Survivor: A New Era (2021)
Still as good as ever
There's a lot of bad reviews for this season of survivor. I hadn't seen it yet and I was like OMG what happened. So seems to me people are on their high horses about political correctness gone mad. Probably riled up by some Fox pundit or right wing talking head. I have not missed an episode of survivor since S01E01 I have also watched every episode of Australian survivor.
So what's bad about this episode? We'll I do think they should keep the theme song, it gets me going for the show. I'm a purist and I think the less randomness and twists they add to the game the better. I also think guys is a generic term and is still OK to use today. But I don't watch the show to hear Jeff say. "Come on in guys". I don't care whether he says it or not.
But I like the strategy mostly and to a lesser extent the challenges. None of that has changed. The first few eps are always a bit slow as you get to know the contestants. But I felt I learnt a lot about these already. There was a lot of strategy and the game is on.
Don't reject a show just because of your politics. Just chill out and enjoy what the show is really about. Good television.
The Outsiders (1983)
Not as bad or good as people say
Firstly I should note I stumbled across the extended version. Which by most accounts is better than the original 91 minute version. I searched it out after watching The Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe.
I agree with some of the 1 star reviews. The acting and dialogue is pretty bad. But only in some spots it's also quite good in others. You have to remember they took the dialogue from some book written in the 60s.
But just look at the names in this movie. For a lot of them this was their first big break. Tom Cruise before Risky Business, Ralph Macchio before Karate Kid. Rob Lowe before the sex tape.
It's worth 3 stars for that alone. The acting is worth another 2. Add another star for the storyline. You get 6 stars overall.
I think if you're fans of movies and a bit nostalgic definitely check it out.
The Walking Dead: Honor (2018)
Very Disappointing!
OK so I love the show and I'm committed to watching the whole thing. I even don't mind the slow patches as I know it's building to something. But I'm starting to wonder if we've got another Dexter situation on our hands.
I've always found Carl annoying and I was relieved at the mid season break to know he was going to die. But why pad it out soooo much with all that cheesy drivel. Can you imagine Michonne from Season 2 crying like a baby over this douchebag. What have they done to these characters. Let's hope now he's gone they can get back on track.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
One of the funniest movies ever!!
If you not into taking drugs then just get really drunk and watch this. It's even funnier when you're on something.
The characters are so absurd and over the top but somehow totally believable. Knowing the story of Hunter S Thompson you can imagine a lot of this actually took place.
If anyone has had a friend who always goes that one step too far and makes you really anxious then you can also relate to this movie. There's a brilliant edge to the film always worrying that the Lawyer is going to go too far.
It's fun to watch it and fantasize about being that free. But for most of us it's just a fantasy and we tend to conform to the social norms. Great piece of escapism for anyone with a mild anarchistic streak.
Houseboat Horror (1989)
A really rubbish film that is so bad it's good
I remember seeing this movie years ago very late at night.
So my recollection is a bit sketchy. But from memory it was a poorly made horror. But damn funny.
It was pretty much Friday the 13th but set on a houseboat on a lake. Very Aussie setting (reminds me of my home) so it's nostalgic for me.
It had Animal that used to be on Hey Hey it's Saturday and bunch of other half baked Aussie celebrities. Not to mention Alan Dale who's now gone all Hollywood and jagged roles in 24 among others.
So of course it's a bad movie but I reckon it's one of those so bad it's good types. Check it out, but don't pay more than 50c to see it.
Anyone who says this is the worst Aussie film ever has obviously never seen Muriels Wedding. Now that was a steaming pile of you know what.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
This movie inspired me to sign up to IMDb...
...it was that bad.
OK so it's a stupid movie and should be seen in that context. But some stupid movies like Happy Gilmore, are done really well and are hilarious. This is just utter drivel.
Even the actors could tell it was rubbish. In the outtakes at the end the main guy (I refuse to learn what his name is.. Farrell something) comments this is bad.
The character played by the guy from the American version of the office is a bad cartoon character. It's just too stupid to be funny.
It was an insult to the senses. There's nothing worse than a comedy that just doesn't have any jokes. Save your pennies and watch dodge ball, billy Madison and the like if you really like stupid movies.
