Kaala Paani (2023)
Master piece
Biswapati Sarkar, just look at the number of shows this man has created with his masterful storytelling and screenplay. Nothing feels out of place in the show. Cinematography to acting to background score - everything blends into the story. The small tricks of making an insignificant event significant, at some point later, are not cliched.
A good story makes the viewers emotional without making the characters emotional. Kaala Pani's writing and direction will definitely give you that experience. The acting skills of Sukant Goel, Amey Wagh, Vikash Kumar needs special mention. Good to see Ashutosh Gowariker after so many years. If not for these shows, the acting skills of many of these so called failed Bollywood actors would have gone unnoticed for ever.
Thanks to netflix as I firmly believe Bollywood would never have backed up a project like this. A definite watch.
Kathmandu Connection (2021)
Not bad for a one time watch
Amit sial runs the show on his back. He is slowly turning out to be an actor to watch out for. Be it the negative character of inside edge, jamtara or the side act of raid, a simple murder - he shines like a jem..
Story is okayishh, execution/editing is better than most of the average indian thrillers available on ott platforrms. Other than amit sial, no noteworthy performance by other actors - but that doesn't necessarily mean bad acting. They are not noteworthy - that is it.
Surprisingly, I found a beautiful song in the last episode. That's an added bonus for a thriller series.
Overall, watch it before getting into conclusion by reading reviews given by fanatics. You might find a decent show.
A Suitable Boy (2020)
Refreshing film making on a slow burning period drama
I rated this a 9 out of 10 because there is always space for improvement. Did it quench my thirst as an Indian period drama? It certainly has.
I haven't read the original book by Vikram Seth. So I'm unable to comment if it's a good adaption or not. But as an independent TV series, it's refreshing, certainly pulling the bar a notch higher for other future Indian period dramas.
What I liked was the trademark Meera Niar'ish execution of long shots, along with beautiful classical music blending with the scenes, the uneventful events that sets the motion slow though it isn't in reality. It's a fresh antidote for hundreds of TV series on Netflix that attempts to turn every scene into a twist. The acting is good to perfect for every single character, leaving a few scenes of overacting. Special mention for Ishan Khattar for portraying volumes of expression in almost all dimensions of emotions. I loved that character of Mann. One of those characters that if you read in your childhood, you long to be. And of course the brilliant cinematography. The slow camera movements. It gives you time to breathe and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
What I didn't like was people from varied socio economic background speaking in English. That is something hard to digest. But then it's an adaption of an English novel, so there is nothing much to complain.
There may be many comments from Hindu-extremists crying it depicts a love of Jihad. But the real reason for their anguish is it doesn't showcase Muslims in a derogatory manor. It shows there is good and bad in every community. It shows a time just after India's independence, that had Indian Muslims who stayed back at the time of separation believing India as their own country, and their Hindu neighbors who understood and respected that.
I recommend it to everyone to see that not very long ago there was a time when we loved our neighbors irrespective of their religion.

Aashram (2020)
Decent, better than average
Let me first clarify, i'd have given it 7.5. But biased reviews by the religious fanatics with an undeserving 1 rating forced me to give 10. See it for yourself and decide. Don't go by the ratings. You might find a decent web series!!
It's loosely based on the infamous Baba Ram-Rahim case. Storyline is good, typical Prakash Jha style of execution. Both Bobby Deol and Chandan Roy Sanyal deserves special mention. Darshan kumar, anupriya goekna and tridha choudhury has done decent job. But Vikram Kochhar surprised me with a sublime performance as constable sadhu.
Ashram has it's share of flaws. Most of supporting cast in minor roles are not good actors. The first 20 mins of 1st episode is not at all convincing, until bobby deol enters the screen.
Overall a good series. Specially for fans of prakash jha..
Chaman Bahaar (2020)
An uneasy topic, depicted subtly..
It's a beautifully crafted and well thought, well executed movie. Brilliant performance by jitendra kumar, soulful background music. Not to forget, sonu nigam's voice is as always mesmerizing. Some said this movie is a bit slow; well then poetry is also slow paced compared to comic book stories. So, like poetry, it may not be everyone's cup of tea. If u liked October by soojit sirkar, u will definitely like this one too..
There is a scene at the beginning of the movie where a street dog chases a girl, and the girl runs to her house. Billu (jeetendra) comes to her rescue and wards of the dog, but she runs inside the house anyway. At the very end, in another scene, under changed circumstances, billu sits beside that dog, pats it and cries with it, leaving us wandering whether he has found any resemblance or somehow, if he feels connected to this dog!!! There are scenes like this with a very strong current of emotions flowing underneath.
The director has picked up a story that is relatable to the semi-urban semi-rural india. An india that lives at the outskirts of the metro cities and small towns. An india where a beautiful, well educated, modern girl is followed by her admirers everytime she goes out of house, without meaning any harm ofcourse. They are not even courageous enough to talk to her, because she speaks English fluently. When one or two good looking, powerful rivals arrive, most of them gets the clue that they will never get her attention. But still they come and go, just to take a glimpse. Relate this story ? Welcome to the world of "chaman bahar".
But is it as harmless as you think? The girl might have never even spoken to these Romeos, never glanced at them for once - but does she remain unmoved in this sorrounding.
Director Apurva Dhar Badgaiyan not only walks, but runs and excells on this thin line. Though the whole story is molded in a comical way, but this one is not a typical comedy film - Period. That's where the execution is totally different from "Panchayat"! Every supporting cast makes justice to his/her role. Again the soulful background music deserves a special mention.
Watch it and rate it if you want stars like Jitendra, and Directors like Apurva shines on their own talent, without the need of a godfather in the industry! It's a 9 from my side.
Deducted 1 as there is always scope for improvement.
