Monitor: Pop Goes the Easel (1962)
Bohemia
On display in Prague. Exhibition entitled Bohemia. Laidback montage oriented short on four artists ( three men ans a woman) and artist's lives for a very specific window of time.
Culturally sensitive ans filled with pop culture references.
It doesn't take itself too seriously.
Western clips, wrestling fights, dancing and a plethora of era music make for a vigorous ans exciting pace.
Overall you gain some insight as to the references and the inspiration these young pop oriented artists compose from.
Peter Blake is the standout as he provides opinions as to his work and how it's being received by his contemporaries.
The Midnight Club: Road to Nowhere (2022)
Dead-End
There was a movie a few years back called Dead-End, this episode has nearly the identical beats of that previous one.
Road to Nowhere as an episode might be enjoyable or good outside of this context but, if you've seen Dead-End, this episode is a slog as it makes itself known way too easily and way too early on in the scheme of things. The smoke, the cyclical nature of driving, the amount of gas rapidly dwindling, it's all been done before and done with a greater amount of horror. As a whole The Midnight is starting to see the sunrise and losing a little steam. This show showed potential as a concept but it's weakness crumble to that of so many other anthology based tales.
Ta'm e guilass (1997)
Wild Strawberries and No Fire Within
The Taste Of Cherries is sure to intrigue anyone concerned with morality of suicide. However, A much better exploration of the issue can be found in Louis Maille's A Fire Within, a much more visually compelling and character driven story. Likewise, as mentioned in another review, Bergman's Wild Strawberries is an equally intriguing and beautifully crafted work of cinema.
While The Taste of Cherries is filed with potential many of its more intriguing elements give nothing to the viewer.
Where does the Natural Museum Employee come from? Should the break in narrative mean anything to the audience? How is it significant that the only connection made is one with no origin? Likewise, the solider and seminarist as well as guardian all feel as though the concepts were taken from Kafka without exploring the realms of their social positions.
Overall, an interesting if failed experiment. Watch My Dinner with Andre, The Man From Earth or Mindscape if you want interesting dives into philosophical topics.
Halloween II (2009)
My My Myers, You sure look like you should take a dirt nap
Briefly , if you liked the first one there's a good chance you'll find something to like here. Sure there's violence, gore, nudity, the occasional scare and Michael is bigger and sicker than ever. But sadly he's less imaginative. That isn't to say his imagination doesn't get the best of him. That last one will make sense once\if you watch the movie. So what's wrong with the film you ask?
Well if you were a fan of the original Carpenter film. You might be a fan of off screen kills. This movie, has many moments of what could very well be off-screen deaths but Zombie decides to zoom in for kills that are brutal, and often sick. If that's your bucket of blood then enjoy, but for those less into brutal, realistic violence, be prepared to squirm a little.
The story starts off pretty much where the first remake ended. Samuel Loomis, who was noble and unrelenting in his plight against evil (Michael) in the original, who was less noble in the remake, is now... less noble. This is not a spoiler, you find out about his less than kind attitude five minutes into the film. Laurie Strode is also less than kind. She pleads that she is an angel and wants to change her ways, but you'll surely get the feel she's no angel early into the movie.
The movie's characters are not kind and Zombie has managed to extract any pity you might have felt for their deaths. They are rude, obnoxious and dirty. I mean dirty. Washrooms, kitchens, house exteriors, faces and clothes, everything is dirty in the movie. The police chiefs washroom is covered in spray painted obscenity's. Which I find strange...
If you like horror movies, I'm sure you'll have fun finding some of the cult movie references splashed throughout the movie. Zombie does handle the scares well when they come. And they often come as a surprise. What is more surprising is the amazing speed with which Myers can walk or run. He seems to fly from one location to another in a moments notice, but never drives any vehicle to get there. I think he even climbs walls with what must be his hands, but you never get the chance to enjoy the ridiculous sight of him punching his way up a house.
The soundtrack is actually really well done and sparse, the real terror in the movie comes from seeing deaths with no music, there a no cues as to when Myers will appear and the only sound you hear from his kills are the pounding of flesh and bone, cracking under his fists\body\feet.
There are many psychological symbols in the movie and Zombie, partially succeeds in showing Myers vision of his world.
Zombie has a semi clear vision of his "re-imagining".I still prefer the original sequel, or even H20 in terms of continued story but the movie is intriguing and definitely takes an original direction not seen in the first 8 films of the series. It has cult appeal all over it and will surely be enjoyed by those who like explicit, brutal gore. Simply put don't go into the movie expecting a feel good, thrill ride, fun time like sleep-away camp, Friday the 13th or even April fool's day. It is it's own creation and for that I give it a 6\10
District 9 (2009)
children of men with a twist
Firstly wow. Sure in directorial style and message. District 9 beams not only to distinguish itself as a a science fiction movie. It is also a metaphor for racism, racism that is always present in todays society. Showing with visual ease how racism can evolve to aggravate those of all colours, shapes and sizes, District 9 amazes the viewer with its uncanny ability to make one feel for the aliens along with the humans.
It will surely become an incredibly popular cult film, it may even become a simple sensation. Made on a minuscule budget of 30 million, funny people cost 70 million. the special effects, lighting, cinematography, direction and acting are all made with care and skill.
We the viewer, get to follow Wikus Van Der Mew as he embarks on a thrilling journey of self discovery and redemption. We follow ruthless, scary, caring and strange characters in their day to day lives and you might well get so engrossed in the film that fiction and reality might start to blend.
Enjoy it in theatres. The sound packs a bunch and is crystal. I went with friends who are not big sci-fi fans, but all of them enjoyed the ride that is district 9. Go see the movie if not in theatres than in DVD and enjoy. Highly recommended
Igor (2008)
stichy at best
Igor flip the channel. I'll start off by saying i really wanted to like this movie. I've been looking forward to it for more than 2 months now and I was completely blown away by it's lack of humor and uninspired script. I'm a big fan of John Cusack and he does a good job with the voice acting but honestly there's no shining light to this film. It's the biggest disappointment of the year for me and i strongly suggest anyone hoping to see a fun movie to look elsewhere. It was long, tedious and felt stitched together. The movie isn't funny and may be too complicated for the younguns and is too childish and uninspired for adults. If you like horror comedy with a playful twist i suggest you simply go out and buy Nightmare before Christmas instead. I hope this could help, i wish i would've read a similar review beforehand.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
elaborate, beautiful...long
The death of the John Wayne Western: The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford
It's been a long time since a great western movie came out. 1992's Unforgiven was Clint Eastwood' last ride in the genre and later in 1995 the exciting The Quick and the Dead. The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford is a new type of western; it is a non-fiction story beautifully told and well acted by its entire cast of characters. The plot revolves around Jesse James last months. The film begins with Robert Ford trying to join Jesse James's gang. He is accepted and they proceed to rob a train in Blue cut, the year was 1881. The events that follow are grim, dirty and nonetheless captivating.
The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, every scene is carefully set and light turning the landscapes into characters themselves. The cinematography is most notable when Jesse James and his gang are robbing a train in Blur Cut, on September 5th, 1881. Shot in near darkness, the camera gently sweeps across a man's silhouette, as it slowly disappears under smoke from the train. Roger Deakins's cinematography is truly spectacular and rightly deserves its Oscar nomination. The pacing is slow and slightly uneven. You will not find many action scenes, and the few that are in the movie, serve only to further the story.
The film has a runtime of roughly two hours and forty minutes. It is shot realistically without the overuse of editing; the viewer sees the action as though he or she were there. The narration takes time to get accustomed to but adds clarity to key scenes in the film. The movie itself plays out like that of a discovery channel re-enactment, which is not to say is bad, it simply makes it unique in terms editing and pacing. Brad Pitt showers the screen with emotional restraint and a characterization that overpowers all his previous performances. His portrayal of Jesse James is sly and captures a lost soul. Jesse James is portrayed as an intelligent man that could be kind yet evil, trusting one moment and menacing the next. Casey Affleck is the coward Robert Ford. His soft-spoken portrayal seeks and succeeds in showing a man who truly glorifies Jesse James. In a scene near the end of the movie, he tries on Jesse James's hat, sleeps in his bed and tries to emulate his stance and manner. The movie is long, uneventful, yet wholly captivating. The film is recommended for those who like photography, character studies and period pieces. It is a very good movie, but not great and will probably be disliked by action fans and those that like a lot of explosions in their movies.
Across the Universe (2007)
memorable
Across the Universe The Beatles, their words spoke for a generation in the sixties. Their music is renowned and loved across the world. Across the Universe tells a story no one has ever seen using the songs everyone has heard.
Across the Universe is a visually stunning rendition of over 20 Beatles songs that will dazzle your ears and your eyes. They range from the world renowned "Hey Jude" and "Come together" to the more obscure "I've just seen a face" and "Because".
The main character is Jude, played by the handsome Jim Sturgess. He is a dockworker from Liverpool who goes to America in hope of finding his biological father. Lucy is young woman played by Evan Rachel Wood who thinks love can conquer all. Jude meets Max, played by the equally handsome Joe Anderson, at Princeton University and they set out to New York where Lucy and Jude fall in love. From then on the story evolves into a face paced and musically powered story of love, war and everything in between.
The cast includes the comedian Eddie Izzard, Bono, Joe Cocker and other musical greats. It also introduces Jim Sturgess, a young, brown eyed, blacked hair man who might just become the next teen heart throb. Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Anderson also star in a cast of relatively unknown actors.
Now, to answer your question, the covers of many of the great Beatles songs have not been botched. The new renditions of the Beatles songs are spectacular. "Strawberry fields", "I am the walrus", "dear prudence", "Revolution", "Helter Skelter", have all been successfully reproduced and are sung and played out with a distinct visual style. The songs are so catchy that you'll be humming at least one of the songs by the end of the movie.
Julie Taymor, the director and one of the writers of Across the Universe directs a visually inventive but slightly uneven story of war and romance in the early seventies. The cinematography is beautiful and imaginative but sometimes steals from the performances in the movie. The costumes are original and very impressive. The most captivating costumes are those in the "Mr. Kite" music number, they show a stunning display of originality. The lighting in the movie is slightly over-dramatic but succeed in portraying the director's vision, albeit slightly heavy-handedly. There are a lot of memorable scenes in the movie and the musical numbers are done with much more grace and style than most recent music videos.
The film will surely be enjoyed by those of all ages and is a blessing to all those who love musicals and Beatles music. The movie breaks all generation gaps but will hold a special place in the hearts of those born in the sixties.
Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
die hard again hits the sweet spot
I haven't had the chance to write a review about a movie yet, but this movie definitely deserves it. I am a fan of the series, its been one good action movie after the next for the die hard series and this movie follows suit.
I went with friends to see this movie and they had never seen any of previous movies of the series, and after questioning them after the movie, they felt right at home, they felt Bruce Willis/john McClane was easy to root for and they understood where he was coming from without explanation.
WE cheered, we awed and laughed all the way through the movie and if u liked the previous installments you will surely enjoy this one.
Justin long does a great job acting and so does that guy from district 13, without trying to sound gimmicky it was a thrill ride from start to finish and if you over look some of the bad dubbing to conceal the more vulgar language it is an easy movie to root for.
After seeing this stellar effort I am anxiously awaiting a fifth movie in the series as i am sure they can keep up the fun and enjoyable action that the series has put forth so far.
