Unthinkably Good Things (2022)
So Refreshing!
How refreshing to see these lovely, beautiful Black women depict a strong bond and sisterhood.
We don't always want to see trauma, severe pain and social woes (although there's importance in telling the stories as well -and they are needed). A balance of seeing the sweet side of life is also imperative and inspiring.
Loved all the ladies and was immediately impressed by Karen Pittman! Who IS this woman?!?You can see her depth.
Erica ash's comedic talent comes through; Joyful Drakes sweetness is clearly evident through the character she portrays.
The scenery, fashion, setting was a pallet refresh!
I was there with them and enjoyed the journey.
Id love to see more films like this; depicting our beautiful Black women!
Of Good Report (2013)
Had promise, but failed
Well shot, creative and artistic. Was promising at first. Unfortunately, the message ended up convoluted; glorifying femicide and sexual abuse of women. The nudity was gratuitous and left one to question the agenda of the storyteller. As the film ended, it lacked the sobriety, respect and gravity this subject matter warranted.
Couldn't help feeling cheated of the time spent watching what could have been a film with a powerful message against predators masked as educators of children.
What draws you in is the beauty of the depiction of the culture - scenery, music, language, customs. What dampens all and lands as a THUD is the storyteller's inability to offer vindication.
Flatbush Misdemeanors (2021)
Reminds Me of My Brooklyn Days!
I actually like this. It may not be for everyone, but brings me back to my days in Brooklyn, near Flatbush. Love the cultures depicted. The two main characters (Kevin & Dan) do a great job; LOVE these two. Perfectly matched pair.
The writing is good and reflects the vernacular of that setting (with the exception of the constant "Jesus Christ" use as an expletive with Dan's dialogue; overused and is offensive to some).
I'm Into the second season. There's some lulls there, but not a deterrent. Still very much enjoyable.
I think my favorite episode - thus far - is the first, but I'm enjoying them all, as there are some hilarious moments throughout. Love the dry humor as well.
So far missing the character that played "Jess"...but will see how it goes!
Kindred (2020)
Loved it!
Loved the setting, GREAT ACTING.
At first, felt like I wanted a different ending, but when I thought about it, the ending was perfect. Twisted and haunting. Depicted exactly what the writer wanted to convey. Enjoyable & suspenseful.
Yes, similar to a "Get Out" theme, however, love having a female protagonist. BEAUTIFUL.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
Beautiful and Poignant
The performances were stellar; great, great, great ensemble cast.
Viola Davis reminded me as to why I fell in love with her as an artist all over again. She's my hero...
Painfully sad to see Chadwick Boseman - rest in peace- but his performance was nothing but excellence. Oscar winner, in my opinion, even posthumously. Jeremy Shamos was excellent! Loved seeing this August Wilson play come to life about this historic woman, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Very well written, directed and lensed.
Spell (2020)
Loretta Devin!
Ms. Devin's performance is, well, Divine!
Loved watching her bring this character to life.
Fits and Starts (2017)
Great writing...love the acting.
Really enjoyed the simplicity of this. Great writing/acting. The leads are very believable in their roles as they give a unique and refreshing performance; bringing to life a refreshing script.
