The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
No real plot direction
As a lot of the reviews have stated, the first movie was a masterpiece. It asked all the right questions and gave viewer a lot to think about. Any unanswered questions it left were up to the viewers to debate over, research, and think about in the best way. I have spent many hours thinking about this movie and it's outcome.
This movie fails to do anything the first movie successfully accomplished. It introduces a few interesting points but fails to explore any of them properly.
Is John Oldman immortal or just aging very very slowly? What would happen if some young dumb idealistic students discovered his secret? What happened to the previous characters and how are they coping with what he told them?
These are all introduced but never finished. Not a single one of these initial story plots gets a decent answer. The whole film felt rushed and unfinished like the writer had too many ideas for the second movie and instead of picking one he jammed them all together to create this horrible brown mess.
Truly disappointing. The only good thing about this movie was the classroom discussion about religion. For one small brief moment it felt like the first movie.
I awarded 1 star for that scene, 1 for John Billingsley's small cameo, and 1 in honour of the first movie which I will watch now to help get the bad taste of the second out of my mind.
